Default beryl project

I found the beryl project and would like to try it, has anyone here tried it? and if so how long does it take to set up? what exactly do i need? and just how stable is it?

the machine i plan to use it on is a dell inspiron 1520 with 2gb of ram, a c2d t5500 and a 8600m gt

any advice?

Beryl is officially deprecate; they merged back with Compiz to form Compiz Fusion. You should be installing that.

It's pretty stable, provides very nice eye candy (very good for conversions, aero looks like a dung heap compared to it), and can run on fairly low-end hardware. Your ram is more than high enough to not feel anything (compiz uses about 50M or so of RAM, emerald uses usually <10). You'll need non-free binary drivers to support it, but if you already have that, installation should be painless.

so basically im going to have to pay to use it?

They are free. Anything can be had online. If you feel like paying for something go for it. I'm not going to lie and say I know all about this, but often the "non-free" moniker means that it is not open-source and has not been freely distributed. However, that is not something that should stop you from using the hardware you paid for. Just enable the installation of copyrighted code.
