| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

Let me run something by you, BLTC... (Alcohol)
I know this doesn't exactly fit the categories of BLTC, but I'll ask anyway.
http://plaza.ufl.edu/scott28/wine.html
Lets say I make the clear stuff from the BONUS: CHEAPER ALCOHOL! section, and after waiting for it to ferment I freeze it, will I result in pure alcohol in the end?
http://homedistiller.org/notstill.htm
Scroll down to the Freezing section.
Anyway, any guidance would be appreciated.

Alcohol lowers the freezing point when it becomes concentrated, you dumbshit. So unless you have a freezer that can go like 200 below C you ain't gonna get pure alcohol. 20% maybe, at best.

Re: Let me run something by you, BLTC... (Alcohol)
Temperature (F/C) % Alc.
-12.2 8
-15.0 11
-17.8 14
-12.2 8
-20.6 17
-23.3 20
-26.1 24
-28.9 27
-31.7 30
-34.4 33
Bold = Crappy wine.
According to this, I'd only need a -15 Freezer for 11% alcohol.
The water would freeze and I'd get a layer of alcohol on the top.
Your retort?

Your retort?
You think 11% alcohol, 80% water, 1% yeast, and 8% sucrose is pure alcohol?
You have a lot to learn

You have a lot to learn
Water freezing point = 0
Alcohol (Ethanol) freezing point = -114
You freeze the water, ice goes to the bottom, pure alcohol at the top.
To freeze a liquid with 11% alcohol I need a -15 freezer.
I need another opinion. Anyone help?

Re: Let me run something by you, BLTC... (Alcohol)
Have you fucking read nothing?
All the water does not freeze out while leaving pure alcohol behind, moron. It does not work that way no matter how retarded you try to make it seem
If you freeze 11% alcohol, you will get a slightly higher concentration while also losing some because it just got trapped between frozen water molecules.
And you should probably look up the definition of "pure", because 15% alcohol diluted in water is not pure by any means other than that there are two both pure chemicals mixed together.

Chemical Eudaemonia is correct, though he's being kind of nasty about it. :p You can only get so far by freezing.

Yeah, Chemical Eudaemonia knows what he's talking about. The remaining alcohol in solution causes freezing point depression of the water, which prevents it from crystallizing at the temperature it normally does and therefore needs lower and lower temperatures to freeze as the concentration of alcohol in solution increases.

Just make a small scale bucket distiller. So simple.

Oh man, I just understood where you're coming from. Yeah, this would work if a single freezing would freeze all the water out, but it does only a bit at a time. :(

why bother freezing, just distill regularly.

A handle of cheap vodka can't cost more than the supplies to make an equivalent amount of just as shitty homemade moonshine...
