Yea, the title's basically what I want to know. As for what I already know, the active ingredients in Listerine all have high boiling points, so they should be left behind in a distillation. But yea, I ran the numbers, and heat not included, I could get a 1750ml of (pure) alcohol for $18.00.

I've seen many people do it. Sadly to say even some of my friends do it when they can't get liquor. Its only like 20 - 30% alcohol though, so the organ damage isn't really worth it.

One time i saw a hobo walk out of the rite aid on the corner of olive and broadway in seattle (anyone from there will know where i am talking about...), clutching a big bottle of listerine in one hand. Three steps out of the door he proceeded to take the cap off, throw it on the ground forcefully, then take the whole fucking bottle to the face. I laughed so fucking hard, it was a sight to be seen... he just threw the bottle aside and stumbled away after that one.

anyways, OP, yes you can, lookup all the inactive contents boiling points and bear in mind that anything with boiling point below 74*C will end up in your final product and could be unhealthy.

If your desperate you could do what someone mentioned earlier, everclear = no effort, or peppermint extract but that has to be some nasty shit.

Although, slightly on topic, just put it in the freezer, the water will solidify leaving liquid ethanol.

Clear mint Listerine actually tastes pretty nice, better then a lot of alcohol that is meant to be drunk.

Listerine is kind of pricey though, better to go with cooking wine. It is $2 for a 750ml bottle of 20% here. They add salt, but that can be easily removed with distillation.

Sugar wine is ultra cheap though, like $0.20/bottle.

I read about this a few years ago and tried it.. it didn't do anything other than taste unpleasant.. I made sure it was the exact kind as well.. anyone know anything about this?

It's the cheapest alcohol you could buy even if you were of age. Yes, that includes Everclear, which by me runs $45 per half gallon (w/ tax). A half gallon of distilled mouthwash costs 18.00 (100%abv)

I should mention though, that when I say Listerine, I don't mean actual Listerine, but an imitation product (same ingredients) at my local dollar store that costs $1.00 (duh) per 100ml alcohol. Really, you get 500ml but it's 20%abv so 100ml pure.

On to the other stuff, I like the idea of cooking wine. I haven't seen it around. Where do you pick it up? (are there any chain stores that carry it?) Do you have to be of age?

Oh, and I think I've got a good (easy) way to distill mouthwash. Look up "The Amazing Still". It's flame-less (so it won't explode) and you can run it continuously. You can build it yourself out of just about anything. The only part of it that's hard to get a hold of it the heater thing, and I think you can just ghetto-vise that by putting an incandescent light bulb into an extension cord socket and electrical taping it so it's water proof.
