| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

Drug effects on the brain
I know a fair bit about doses, safety etc. but I'm still not very clear on the actual neurological effects of drugs on the brain. I know that MDMA releases serotonin, and that meth and coke release dopamine. What neurotransmitter do opiates release? And would the best combination of drugs be one drug from each category, e.g. MDMA, an opiate and coke?
Also, how come you can be high on opiates 24-7 without any negative effects on the brain (in theory)? For example, I read on BLTC all the time that you shouldn't roll more than once every 2 weeks-month. You can't go on coke/meth binges all the time without needing a break. But you can be high on opes (assuming you don't OD) indefinitely without causing any problems.

Re: Drug effects on the brain
Opiates release endorphins, the bodies natural pain killers.

OK, so are there any other neurotransmitters released by drugs, aside from dopamine, serotonin, or endorphins? Would the 'ultimate high' be a combo of drugs (in safe doses) that released as many neurotransmitters as possible or something? Like a spike filled with MDMA, coke, and smack?
Sorry for any stupid questions, I'm curious (and trying to find a combo that will be balls-to-the-wall awesome).

Ever wonder why speed balls are so highly revered? :p
However, certain drug combos tend to fuck your shit up, so naturally you try not to do those... ;)

Re: Drug effects on the brain
dopamine
of course through endorphins and select proteins called opiate receptors play great role in the way opiates (in general work)
it comes down to dopamine dopamine.

The answer is: no one knows
You cant simply quantify chemicals by what the release...the real answer is no one really knows.
New research is published frequently, and a degree in neuro-science is required to remotely grasp the possible ways these drugs might work.
