Effect of demonizing drugs
I was thinking the other day about the effects that demonizing drugs has on our society. I mean, when we were in tribal settings, if a certain plant or flower had psychotropic effects it would be revered as sacred and injested with responsibility and respect. Now, the general public has been fed the idea that drug users are rapist maniacs, and that no drug could possibly have any beneficial effect on perception. It seems like this also has lead to the very increased perception of drugs as party enhancers. Many people seem to revere drugs as only tools for getting fucked up and acting crazy.
Thoughts?

Re: Effect of demonizing drugs
The demonisation of recreational drugs makes it a lot easier to keep them illegal, we all know this. It's not right. However to say that we should make them legal simply because they were a part of ancient culture is ridiculous. Child molestation and human sacrifice were also accepted practices back in the day, should we reintroduce them too?

Re: Effect of demonizing drugs
Every effect has a cause. The reason for drugs being looked downly upon? A more knowledgable society. I think you exaggerate just exactly how much they're looked down upon, as there are a lot of pro-drug motherfuckers out there now that the public see.. and it has an effect. it's cool to be open minded in our society in this age, and although they may not thinks drugs are a GOOD idea (which they usually aren't) but i wouldn't consider drugs being 'demonized'. It's true though, show me 100 druggies and 100 non drug users and i'll guarentee the druggies will be less successful overall. Sure there will be some druggies that are more successful than the non-druggies.. some people can do it, most can't. sad but true. i think instead of keeping alot of the drugs criminalized, there should be more knowledge taught to the world about them, and let the general public decide for themself when they're ready. but the reason we don't consider them sacred like the people you were referring to is.. we've evolved and advanced?

You're comparing human sacrifice and child molestation to recreational drug use?

He's using it as an example. Just because it's been done for thousands of years, doesn't mean it should be legal in today's society.
Drugs legal or illegal, I'm not too bothered. Either way I'm still going to acquire and use them.

I don't think it's that they were a part of ancient culture, it's that past cultures didn't understand how they worked. They didn't immediately demonize something because it could have adverse effects. If somebody died experimenting it was in the pursuit of knowledge and experience. Instead of accepting somebody's ignorance as a fault or tragedy our society attempts to protect people against it. What we really get is enforcement of ignorance. People die or get hurt and we learn from it. It's an integral process in the advancement of knowledge and a fact of nature.
It's true though, show me 100 druggies and 100 non drug users and i'll guarentee the druggies will be less successful overall.
This isn't proof that drugs make people less successful. It's proof that the policy of "all drugs are bad, you don't need to know anything else" has a negative effect on society. The US and most of the world actually prohibits the unbiased research of drugs. That's why a lot of people have no choice but to learn about drugs from experience alone. It's starting from square one over and over and over again.
Thankfully with the internet we have some resources for collective experience but real modern research is pathetically lacking. I'm proud to say that I've researched every drug I've ever taken as much as I could and because of it I haven't killed myself. I've had a great time and learned more than I could ever have imagined.
some people can do it, most can't. sad but true.
This however is definitely true and it fits well with my last couple of points. It should be common knowledge. Instead, all drugs are lumped up into one category of evil. When somebody with a few brains cells realizes pot isn't really the going to ruin their life forever their curiosity will tell them that maybe the same logic applies to the rest of drugs. Obviously, this isn't true.

Re: Effect of demonizing drugs
I think Christianity had a lot to do with this. I mean, when you talk about 'ancient cultures', they span plenty of different religions. Most likely old timey drug users were not Christian. Christianity tends to frown on things that are pleasurable, calling them sins; from having sex before marriage, to I don't know, sleeping all day.
So basically, when drug use got all popular and people started taking pleasure in it, those goddamn Christians probably started saying it was sinful. Despite the fact that drugs were probably mentioned in the bible. Bastards.
The morals of todays society make no sense, get used to it.
