Specifically, finding out if it's sativa/indica/hybrid?

I would say my bud gives me an soaring cerebral high, getting me to do stuff more than simply chill out.

But the thing is, I can simply will myself to chill out on it and watch TV, etc. I guess without having definitively tried a sample of JUST Sativa or Indica it'd be hard to discriminate.

The bud I get is you're typical stuff you'd get in highschool, with labels thrown around such as "crippy" "reggie" "danky dank" which don't tell you shit. It's not that the bud is bad, but the dealers think they sound cooler when they talk retarded.

I've been getting two varieties mainly... one which is not as dense buds, but with a lot of orange trichromes etc. The other is much denser, with "sugar frosting (if you know what I mean)" and less hairs.

Most bud "strain names" are just made up mumbo-jumbo that dealers create in order to trick highschool idiots into thinking they've bought really good shit.

If your bud looks nice, and gets you high - you're set. Leave it it at that.

bud density is proportional to the temperature it was grown in, trichrome color is dependent on the time of harvest in relationship to maturity of the crop, the "sugar frosting" factor is dependent more on the light quality than the strain. You cant tell what you have from that info, i assume you know the difference in sativa high vs. indica stone. its very improbable that you will find out what strain it is. If you seen the plant itself you can judge if its sativa/indica from the growth characteristics - height, leaf width... as far as bud goes the sativas i have personally seen seem to have darker buds and more of fruity, tropical scent, while idicas are lighter with more apparent trichromes with skunkier, pungent and pleasantly fetid odor, but that in no way applies to every strain out there. Chances are what you are getting is a indica/sativa hybrid since thats what most comerce-compatibile strains are.
You can also compare your nug to the pictures of books such as cannabible, big book of buds, the good bud guide, or on the cannabis seed sites but keep in mind that dried product probably will look different than buds on a growing plant.

Also, I think you people are confusing strain with colloquial names. Headies is not a strain. Kush is a strain.

Pretty much my situation; the orange haired variety IS a significantly darker now that I look at it.

I may post pictures some time to see what &T thinks is the better buy so I can keep buying more of the better stuff.

It's pretty much impossible to try and guess the strain by the bud. There are so many possibilities

you can however tell the basics. which is just four basic things, sativa, indica, and which ever dominant hybrid.




now after smoking some, using some scientific equipment and maybe a microscope or something you might narrow down the possibilities some...

Plenty of ways. Compare it to pics in a heads mag or on the net. Ask a dealer that is older than 16. Compare looks, smell, taste, color etc. to a similar strain.

I thought i had sum sour diesel, so i typed it in, and voila, a shitload of hi res pix to look though, turned out it was NYC diesel.

I have a little box I can put a nug in. It connects to my computer via USB, I press a button and it displays the strain name on my screen. If you're really interested in strains you should pick up one of those things.

Yea there's no way to tell. 2 completely different strains can both yield a phenotype which looks, smells and smokes the same. You can tell if it's pure indica bud though. Pure indica has a distinctive smell to it, almost narcotic haha. But other than that, you wont be able to tell. Pure sativa is so fluffy, a gram would look like a half quarter of normal bud. But probably by the time it gets to you, the buds get squished somehow and it won't look the same at all.
