Default Linux media server on windows/linux network

I've just installed debian on an old computer and am going to use it as a media/file server for mah home network. The problem is, we have a debian, xp and vista computer on the network. I'd like all these computers to be able to read and write to the server.

The only solution I can see is formatting as fat32 but that's not that ideal.

My question is, If I just use standard ext3 would the other windows computers be able to write to it?

network drives can be any filesystem as far as i know. I have had little to no trouble wtiting to any filesystem from any OS through networked drive.
----

i amtrying to set this up now, and have run into trouble... i don't think its a filesystem problem
but windows seems to not have write permisions, i will work on this and get back to you

Ahh ok, I guess cause it's the server actually writing to the drive. Awesome

Ok and your problem is you probably need to mount with the correct permissions or something,

Set up whatever filesystem you want, it won't matter (though I would recommend ReiserFS or XFS over ext3 for a server). The clients should be accessing the files through an abstraction, probably Samba if you're going to be communicating with windows boxes.

for the drive to work in windows do you have to mount it? the windows computer gets a list of files that are shared and cannot open them.

Make sure your samba permissions are correct. SWAT is pretty easy to use from what I hear. You don't need to map the drives locally to access the files.
