Yeah yeah, alcohol thread, I know. But this also involves ethanol used as a solvent and fuel and instead of posting in DIY, lab tips AND the alcohol thread I decided to just do it here.

1. If I just throw a few cups of sugar, some wine making yeast and some distilled water into a (sterile) 5 gal bucket with the lid on (has that one circular hole in the lid, i think you guys know what I mean) can I expect decent yields?

2. After I distill it, I plan on drying it with zeolite. I'm looking for anhydrous ethanol here and this looks like the easiest way, but I'm not 100% sure I can get zeolite (internet?). Anyway, after I dry it can I still drink it? I mean use it to mix with drinks like I would with vodka or even ever clear. Google says it may have toxic "contaminants", whatever that is suppose to mean. And no, contaminants doesn't refer to denatured eth, it means anhydrous in general.

3. Would anhydrous ethanol that has been added to a party mix taste... well, weird? If anything, I would expect LESS of a taste, but I have never done this before. Looking for first hand experience...

4. Is there a proper way to store ethanol for long periods of time? I'm thinking that keeping it in PET plastic bottles will be fine. Amiwrite?


Thanks. On a side note, what is a safe amount of time to store chloroform before taking a nice whiff of phosgene? I know homemade chloroform isn't in the least bit safe, but you know what I mean. Also, it is stored in a dark place at room temp in a UV resistant bottle.

i would expect that you could drink it without it hurting anyone if it was anhydrous... granted it would burn like ever living fuck if you drank it strait... and if your going for pure alcohol it shouldnt taste like much of anything...

oh and that chloroform question... pretty sure it breaks down into phosgene in your liver anyways... stay away from it...

You'll need a proper sealed container to store ethanol cos IIRC it converts its self to ethanal and in turn ethanoic acid.

oh and wouldnt it be easier to just distill the ethanol out of some vodka or ever clear than making it yourself?

Well a liter of vodka is like 20 bucks and I'm also looking to use this for fuel so that will get pretty expensive... Plus there's just something about making what is pretty much moonshine that appeals to me.
