Video converters AVI-MP4 (debian)

Does such thing exist? I've found programs that convert dvds to avi and other various formats but I can't find something that will convert AVI - mp4

Anyone here know of a program that would do such a thing?

ffmpeg is thing you want and the easiest way to install that is to install a program called pspvc which installs ffmpeg as a side. So that's done.

I'll post a howto sometime detailing all the steps if anyone is interested. I've started writing howtos for things like this based off all the info and howtos that I read. This helps me if I ever need to do it again plus I can look more closely at what all the steps are. I list all the sources at the bottom of course.

Why would you want to go avi to mp4? Or do you want to go the other way?

Well I needed it as ps3 only supported mp4 but I've since found that I can stream avi so I don't actually need this any more.
