Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Situation: My Mum and Dad know I, from time to time smoke weed.
The time to time however is more of an every day thing.
I've also been engaging in other drugs e.g. acid, shrooms, MDMA (though this time, it is actually a now and then kind of thing) My plan is that if I do really well in my essays this year, I'll tell them.
The reason I want to tell them isn't a teenage (I'm 21) message of rebellion. It's an adult wanting to be honest with my parents, so that they know what I get up to and they don't go on thinking I'm the perfect son (I do my best to help around the house, rarely get into trouble, always work hard, grades are good, polite and thoughtful around them and their friends). I feel guilty pretending I don't do anything wrong because at university, I obviously do.
Should I just let them live in blissful ignorance, or should I let them know?

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Depends on what they are like. If they are the kind that will abandon you because of the choice of using drugs, even though it might be best to say fuck em if they are that narrow minded, but it would be better to not say anything.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
I've never seen the point of telling my parents about my drug use, that's your own personal private buisness. Putting it out in the open makes you an attention whore. And if drugs are a "lifestyle" for you then you need to go see a psychiatrist.

I think they have the potential to be very disappointed, but I believe they could understand it.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Parents are strange though, for example mine are both pro-legalization of all drugs but heaven forbide I should bring drugs into their house or be on drugs infront of them, probably because there still illegal. I don't even live with them anymore and I still want tell them that I do anything other than drink or smoke weed upon occasion.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Y'know... the alternative is that you actually haven't done anything wrong (call me when you're snorting coke off the dead hooker you just raped, buddy)... and you are a perfect, individual example of a human being.
Don't get me wrong... "Mom, dad... I hotrail heroin off gay hookers in a bizzare, drug-fueled BDSM lifestyle" is a cool conversation and all... I'm just wondering if you've really examined your reasons. You seem to have a lot of unneccesary guilt which is basically unjustified by a human-impact view of morality.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Jesus Christ, ZeroMalarki. Do you actually WANT to get into rehab? I gathered that you live with your folks, if I'm right, you have no business making an "adult decision" and coming clean and whatever.
It's a 90 percent chance they'll ship you to rehab, and take it from me, it isn't fun at all. Once there, you need to get REALLY fucking creative in order to do drugs. Just drop this.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
You aren't doing anything wrong. Just because you're doing drugs, doesn't mean your a failure.
You appear to have a good relationship with your family, you are doing well in school (or at least have aspirations of doing so), you help out around the house. Drugs are not a problem. You are living a successfully life by your standards and you aren't letting drugs get in the way, congratulations. They don't need to know.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
I don't think your parents should be worried about you taking drugs.
I mean, I take loads of drugs, and I got really good grades at university, until I dropped out anyhow.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Thanks guys, there's a lot of good responses there.
I think I'll keep my vices to myself. Whilst they wouldn't put me in a rehab, chances are they would at first be disappointed and concerned, something that they could do without.
Blissful ignorance for the win?

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
Ignorance is bliss.
Don't ruin a good thing. If they would be accepting of your drug use anyway, they would understand someones reason for thinking they should hide that from their parents, if you were ever to get caught.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
I told my parents that I smoke pot daily after I turned 22. I live on my own, have my own place, a great job, a girlfriend, a dog etc etc. I figured now If I made it to where I am at whilst using all along, they wouldn't care.
I turned out to be correct. I told them I was high the past 6 years (daily smoking) and they were a little taken back and stunned. But at the same time that they saw that I could accomplish all those things in my life all the while being high they knew that I could HANDLE my shit and it wasn't a problem for me.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
first, tell them about all the good things your doing. then let them know you smoke more often than they think, and slowly build up to it.
dont sit them down and be corny like "Mom, Dad, we need to talk about something serious."
just let them know SEPERATELY, so that they dont start talking about it together, and say things like, "Dont tell Mom."
also, let them know slowly. as your talking about something good about you, let them know something more than they know
but not all at once, more like an iv drip

If your playin me, keep it on the low
Cause my heart can't take it anymore
And if your creepin, please don't let it show

I think this is your problem right here. Don't ever let others define your concepts of what is right and wrong unless you completely agree with them.
In this case, you think you did something wrong because some people (not all) think that it's wrong to do drugs. Well, do you actually believe that it's wrong? It might be wrong to steal, it might be wrong to lie, but I believe that all humans have the right to put anything in their body they desire.
You feel free to make up your own mind.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
i'm 20, and a little over a year ago i told my mom i had been drinking and smoking weed since i was 16.
i didnt tell her about all of the other stuff, but between me telling her i do drugs and my way above average knowledge concerning most recreational drugs, my fascination with pharmacology, and my pro legalization and regulation political views, she definitely gets the message.
her only rule is that she wont condone it. she wont buy me booze, she'll throw away my pipes if she finds them in her house. but thats understandable, who wants their kid to do drugs? and i should respect her rules when im at home. (i dont live with them anymore so that probably makes it easier too)
but telling my parnets the truth about my drug use was one of the most liberating experiences of my life. i no longer feel like im lying to them all the time. we can have rational discussions about it.
if you're not living in their house, and they will be rational about it then i highly reccomend telling them.

"You have done something to your brain. You have made it high. If I lay 10 mills of diazepam on you, it will do something else to your brain. You will make it low. Why trust one drug and not the other? That's politics, isn't it?"
I'd just admit to the weed; the other stuff has a much higher freakout quotient. About a third of the population (of the US) has smoked pot; the other things are much scarier because people are much less familiar with them.

Re: Coming out to the parents.. about drugs?
it depends on you and it depends on them. i talk to my parents about smoking weed, but they don't know i've tried stuff like acid or mushrooms. they just don't need to know, and it'd only worry them. they know i'm smart about the things i do, and i don't get in trouble.
i guess just tell them as much as you want, but you don't need to tell them everything if it'd worry them or they just aren't cool with it.
btw, i'm 20.

If those who brought you up, support you through university (financially) define something is wrong, then they probably wouldn't like you to do it. They would probably be disappointed you were using money to pay for the vices.
That's my problem.. though I do have a "I probably shouldn't be doing this, got work to do.." sort of mentality.

I went through this last week. Just explain what you are trying to accomplish through using such things and reassure them that if you get caught it'll be your ass and not theirs.

Yeah my mom's tripped dozens of times and she walked in on my tripping one night. We talked from like 3am to 5am about life and shit. It was weird, I had a strange feeling in the back of the head but it felt so right.
