Ways to stay sober
Alright I know this may come off as sounding real pussy, but I'm looking for real replies which I always expect from totse.
I do not consider myself an addict, although some might consider it. I spend around $250 dollars a week on oxycontin, cocaine, alcohol and cannabis. I have spent over $2000 dollars this year on narcotics. I'm not trying to glorify my drug use at all, these are the facts of my life.
I have been sober almost 48 hours, I am not experiencing any withdrawals but I am fiending like a motherfucker for oc. I spent some time making a pro/con list about quitting, a list of things to besides drugs, and have spent time trying to commit myself to staying sober.
I know I want to stay sober and am ready to take every possible avenue to do so. I am completely clueless of what else to do. Is taking phone numbers of drug dealers out of my phone appropriate? Should I stop talking to my friends who use (which is all of them)? Again, I don't really know what to do and I don't have anyone to talk to. I live by myself, go to class for 2-3 hours in the morning, work 5-6 hours afterward. It sucks to be alone, it sucks even more to be alone without drugs.

Re: Ways to stay sober
What helped me when i quit for a while was taking up a weightlifting program and sticking to it. Rid your house of all drugs and change the dealers numbers in your phone to like DONTCALL. that way you will think abotu it before calling, but in case for some reason in the future you need the numbers you still got them.

Re: Ways to stay sober
Yeah I know its real gay but I'm getting sick of the lifestyle. My life seems to get better then something happens and I feel like it just gets worse and worse, and I tend to dig a bigger and bigger hole for myself.

Re: Ways to stay sober
I defintely advise staying sober for as long as possible. Then after a while if you feel you are in control again you can make hte experienced decision as to whether you wnat to responsibly use drugs again.

Re: Ways to stay sober
Avoid the people you used to do drugs with. Avoid the people you used to buy off of. If you can't buy it you can't do it. Maybe even give your bank card to a trusted friend if you're really serious so you can only use it for non-drug related shit.
Buy really, why do you want to stop?

Re: Ways to stay sober
Mainly to concentrate on school. I have a decent job now, I have a chance to get an even better one for after college, however my grades blow balls.
I also want to save money, and like I said before I'm sick of the whole lifestyle, relying on other shit to make me happy and relax me. I hate having my nights/weekends regulated by whether or not I'm getting coked up or not, or dealing with bullshit dealers and friends, shit like that.
Alright I changed all the dealers numbers in my phone to DONT CALL, which did take some pressure off myself. However now half my phone is "Dont Call, Dont Call1, Dont Call2..."

I'd just like to thank everyone on this board who replied to this thread and may have helped me in the past. I don't think I will be checking totse for a while, I hope I may have been a help to someone here in the past.

Re: Ways to stay sober
Should I stop talking to my friends who use (which is all of them)? .
I find it WAY too hard to quit (for certain amounts of time) when I hang around my user friends. I usually let them know that I'm in a stage of sobering up, and just have to be by myself for a little while. They always understand because they are good friends. But they're always there for me when I do go back, and man is that day a party.

Obviously if he can't control his urge to do drugs as of this moment, it will never happen. Yes, that's how it works. If you can't use self-control now, you most likely won't ever be able to moderate yourself in the future. If you don't think that's true, you're in denial :(
so you can do two things, you can ever quit for good and never look back. Or you can learn to use in moderation now. What you have to learn how to do is enjoy your life without being fucked up. And I think most peoples problem is they either are unhappy with their situation and/or hate themselves personally (how they look, who they are, etc) so you need to come to terms with this shit. You need to understand why you turned to drug use in the first place to escape your life.
We all want to escape reality, some more than others, we have to find why specifically and personally what makes us unhappy about being sober. For some people, it's just as simple as having nothing better to do and not knowing or caring to do anything besides getting fucked up. For most however, it's self-esteem related.
I hate getting fucked up/drunk and loving life and feeling happy, whenever that used to happen I would get sad afterwards while fucked up and ask myself how come I can be this happy when i'm fucked up and not sober. It made me learn to appreciate my life when i'm sober, and now it's the same thing.
But yea, like the other guys have said, it's all about getting rid of free time and finding something productive to do with your time. Making music is productive. Swallowing pills or drinking liquids like beer and vodka are not. Fun? Yes. Contributing to your life and/or society? Not in the least. (Except as a social laxative. That does count for something. Fuck, America was founded in taverns for christ's sake...sooo)

Re: Ways to stay sober
You want my honest advice?
Stay the fuck away from this message board.
And I am dead serious when I say that.
Why? Well I would say that 9 out of 10 (If not 10 out of 10) people who try and stop using or try to take a break, actually relapse/use earlier than expected/start using again much, much sooner.
Obviously there is no scientific data to back this statement up, but I do know quite a few people from this board (Both on and off-line) that are poster-children for this theory.
It's actually common sense if you think about it. If one is trying to stay away from drugs in the first place, what the fuck is the point of coming to a board that talks about using and abusing illicit, illegal, controlled and household drugs/chemicals in an abusive/self-medicating manner?
Give up? There is no fucking point, other than to use or tease yourself, give yourself cravings, and 9.9 times out of 10, trigger a relapse.
So while you are taking a vacation from drugs and starting up your weight training/gym schedule, also remember to please take a vacation from this forum. And I don't mean just stop posting, I mean to not even come here to read anything either; it's just all pointless and anti-conducive to anyone's plan of fretting from drugs.
I would also recommend talking to a psychiatrist perhaps or someone who you can really open up to. And if you KNOW you have addiction or think you might (Then you do), I would definitely look into seeing a substance abuse counselor at least once to see what and how serious the shit you are really getting yourself in to.
On a lighter note, yoga seems to help me very much as far as clearing the mind of all stress and cravings; just relaxing. If there are any local classes (Perhaps at the gym you will be going to even), I would definitely look in to that as well.
Good luck with everything, and I would say come back and keep us updated, but if I were you, I would wait for a long, long time, until you think you are ready, if at all. And as much as I hate saying this, I would search for and become a member of some sort of drug recovery board to help aide you in your mission and also to get advice to any more questions you may have, resulting in much more positive and experienced answers/info along the way.
Take care and again... good luck!
Mike.

Re: Ways to stay sober
Fucking drama queen motherfucker. If you wanted to quit, you'd quit. If you needed to quit, it would have already been done. You don't want to quit, and you don't feel you REALLY need to quit, but you feel guilty for whatever reason, and decided to bring your battle with your own shadow on here, for god knows what reason.
Point is, you don't need to ask us what to do on how to quit. Just fucking do it, you KNOW what you need to do, you are just pussy footing around about it. Or don't. I don't give a shit.

take suboxone, or call your physician and ask him/her about it. Suboxone keeps my friend off of OC, and he's very thankful for it.

Re: Ways to stay sober
If you're going to do it, you've got to go balls in and do it 100%. That being said, yes it is completely appropriate to erase all numbers out of your phone where you could call and score some drugs. That includes dealers AND acquaintances that use that you could call up and ask around about it.
Like said earlier, you need to take up a new (or possibly more than one) hobby or activity to occupy all your free time.
An active mind isn't one that thinks about drugs 24/7.
Working out, which was suggested before, is a great activity that not only will help you stay clean + Sober but is good for you and your body not only to recovery but for your general health.
Get rid of anything that reminds you or makes you want to use.
If you're not serious about it, then try any other method and keep these triggers around that make you want to use or even think about it and you'll be set up for failure.

Physical activity is the only thing that works for me. If I'm constantly doing shit all day my minds occupied and when I wear my myself out by exercising it relaxes me so I don't get that craving for taking drugs.

Re: Ways to stay sober
most of the people trying to clean up get supported on this board.
anyways, just try to find some hobbies you enjoy... i like things that cause an adrenalin rush... paint ball is fun. try to find somewhere to direct your attention away from drugs, like learning about something useful in life. pick something broad like organic chemistry, physics, or religion. i would also say, after you get all of the information you want here, leave.... nothing like a whole bunch of druggies to remind you of the drugs your trying to get off of... even though its not my thing, working out seems to be a good thing for most.
good luck with it.

Re: Ways to stay sober
get a girlfriend and party
It's probably not a wise idea to start a relationship while trying to quit using drugs. Girlfriends are a lot of stress, and if you were using drugs like that, you have poor coping skills. Neither is it going to be a good idea to "party." Getting drunk is only going to make picking up drugs easier.
It usually takes a major event to persuade a person that it is necessary to quit drugs. You don't sound like you're there yet. However, it's not hopeless. People who are better and worse off than you have been successful in quitting.
