Uncomfortably Numb
Apart from the (VERY) occasional all-nighter, I've quit doing any type of drugs on a regular basis.
I guess in the past six month I've really slowed down, just because I really don't WANT to get fucked up. Anyway, I quit smoking pot about 2 months ago.
Anyway, what I'm concerned about is the complete and utter lack of emotion. It's like I'm too in control. I'm not moved, if you will, by love or betrayal. I don't get emotionally involved with people I meet and even my old friends I'm finding are more disposable in my eyes.
I just don't give a fuck about anyone. No one can really hurt me because it's almost like I don't care. And I HATE it. I want to love even if that means I might get hurt. But I just can't. This has been going on for about 4 years now. I figured it was the drugs and once I quit, my normal emotions would come back, but no.
I'm very apathetic towards people.
Has anyone else been through this or feel like this?

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
I know what your saying man. I haven't smoked weed in about 6 months or so (I didn't quit for those reasons), but I've had the same thing going on for a long time now. I don't think it's the drugs at all. It stems from something else, but the drug use and the lifestyle that goes along with them certainly doesn't help. I haven't been emotionally healthy for a long ass time, but it originated from problems with my family, and was only fed by the drug culture (not that I'm saying you can't use drugs and be emotionally healthy). It's a defense mechanism that your brain starts to get to try to protect you from any kind of anguish (If you don't care about anything, how can anything bother you?) But I can't pretend to know the solution to it. In my case I have a huge problem becoming emotionally attatched to anyone or anything, but things are starting to get better in my life and I'm starting to feel emotion that I haven't felt for years and to be honest it's really confusing and overwhelming at times. I'm not an expert on it at all, but I'm just saying I can relate. All I can say is do something different and give it time.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
This sounds like my emotional state after a month(might have been two...) of very frequent mescaline use. Especially the too "in control" thing. Everything I did was weighed and calculated, and any emotional response was more acting than anything real. It was quite interesting, even entertaining at first, but it wore thin rapidly.
This was also the time I stopped selling and frequent drug use, got back into exercising regularly, and rid myself of a lot of old habits and mental hang ups.
I wish I could say I found a way to work out of it, but all I did was eat some amazing E with my girlfriend of two years, and by the time I peaked I was totally normalized(well, as normal as one can feel at the peak of an MDMA experience), even the constant patterning and color shift faded on the way up. Just BAM!, back to normal.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
Yorimasa,
I've thought about that as well. After my break-up with my ex is when it started, but I didn't really notice it until a year after. And since I realized what was going on emotionally, I've been trying to fight it. Force feelings. I can't.
It's bad. It's like- that want is there, but there's something that's not clicking in my brain to let me truly love/care/feel any type of genuine emotion.
The reason I posted this here is because I've always attributed it to my drug use, but whatever. If the mods thinks it's better somewhere else..
It's not like I'll care if they move it. Hahaha...

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
I have the same problem, but I still do drugs. :)
I lose girlfriends, old friends, and even contact with family members just because I don't care enough to go out of my way and communicate with them. And when I do it's usually very dry conversation, nothing personal. The only people I contact are my best friends who don't give a shit about my cold personality. It's strange, the only time I feel like reaching out to people is when I get all pissed off at myself and hate how I don't reach out to people.
I think it's some kind of personality disorder, not due to drugs. It's possible to fuck up your endorphin release, changing what makes you happy (like social contact). But most people don't do enough drugs to even do that.
I'd like to hear a good answer + solution myself.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
Sounds like depression, maybe? I've heard that after smoking for a long time and then quitting there is about a 6-month period of depression that can follow.
No source to post though.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
I honestly don't think I could be depressed. If I am, I think it's on "ignore".
Can you really ignore depression? Maybe I'm so apathetic that I don't care that I'm depressed? But I don't think I've been depressed for 4 or 5 years!
I don't know, right now things are kind of crazy, but I have the attitude "Everything happens for a reason" so I don't let things bother me, even when shit hits the fan. But there's been huge highs in my life. Even recently, where I had everything I could want. I don't see how one could be depressed when their life is going exactly to plan. I was pretty satisfied.
So no, I don't think it's depression.
And I'm thinking, if it's a defense mechanism, that's kind of fucked. Because I don't WANT it. I thought people who had walls, built them and fortified them on purpose. Here I'm trying to break it down, but it's like I don't know how. Like I'm trying to break down a brick wall by blowing on it.
I've been hoping it was going to come back after ending the drug use.
Now, it's "time will tell".
And I've given up on trying to actively work it out, because I don't know how one would go about doing that. As far as my philosophies and perspective about life go, I think they're very healthy and more enlightened than most people I've met. This is why I don't understand why I have no emotions about anything.

Do you sit still for the majority of the day? I've heard of people becoming depressed and avoidant of others when they don't do enough physical activity.

I stopped smoking and tripping for a month once, went through all the non-emotional crap described, started smoking again, everything went back to being nice and peachy.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
There are tons of things I could say right now to try and rationalize what your feeling, but the truth of it is that it really wont do you much good. What makes people feel detached from society is the constant addiction to the electronics, and all of the other distractions that we use to shut ourselves off from people in general.
Im kind of in the same shit as you are in right now. I experimented with drugs, been off them for a while, and I have this "numbness" in my emotions that I just cannot explain . Yeah it can be scary to think you aren't emotionally attached as you should be, and that you should give a fuck about more people but shit.
My advice is just to get outdoors and do some guy shit. Go shoot some guns, ride some atvs or do something that you feel was fun before you started the habit. But make sure you do it with people you can laugh with, and argue with and feel comfortable with. Don't be afraid to get hurt and just live life.
fuck im 18 and I figured this shit out man cmon
*edit* one more thing I thought about. People in general are fucking stupid sheep. You sound like a pretty smart guy that either can't relate to people or just isnt trying hard enough

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
Nice thread title.
This is happening to me to right now too and I haven't been able to figure anything out. But for the last few weeks I've finally started to gain a little clarity and perspective. I think this happened with time and a lot of thinking in quiet solitude.
If I figure out anything helpful I'll let you know.

Re: Uncomfortably Numb
I went through the same shit and still kind of am emotionless. I use pretty much all day everyday for about 4 years straight mostly just smoked weed but i tried about ever drugs i could. drugs of choice being weed and ecstasy. I used them heavily and frequently. Anyways i have been clean and sober from all drugs for 1 year now. I have talk to a lot of people who have used a lot then quit for awhile and they all agree about feeling the emotionless part. I believe its because if you get high so often you go from being normal to feel Euphoria and that state of being the Euphoria state becomes/ seems normal to you after awhile plus it gives you that sense of accomplishment/well being well when you stop using drugs and getting high and you just go back to being normal all the time and then normal dose not really feel normal anymore like theres something missing all the time. Its gotten better the longer i been clean it still feels a little different but its leveled off for the most part.

sounds like burnout syndrome possible.
Which isnt necessarily caused by drugs but instead stress..
Look it up,
I learned about it in psychology.

No, that's not really a recognized disorder. Also, "sounds like" isn't a good grounds to base that assumption.
If you made friends when you did drugs, and then you stopped doing them, then you lost that thing that you had in common with them(and drugs are a big thing to have in common with people).
If you want to make more friends, I'd suggest putting yourself out there. Propinquity is maybe the 2nd most important aspect of relationships.
