Default Is ecstasy really that bad for your brain?

I hear all this shit about people saying ecstasy is so bad for your brain, but yet I still see people who take ecstasy for so many years everyday and they still have normal brains.

its certainly not good
but the damage done which the government claims it does, i think is completely overexagerated.

government research says mdma abuse can damage the brain and seretonin receptors by up to 80%.

other non-gov. funded researchers have found that it maybe will do 5-7% damage on your seretonin receptors ehh

basically, if you do it a couple times a year... it wont do anything noticeable at all. Even once a month, not really.

Prove it bitch. Source something that proves "MDMA use" (which is a VERY broad term, btw) is bad for you.

Not just sourcing something obvious like "Using MDMA everyday will cause long term brain damage" which is already obvious.

MDMA isn't that (relatively) neurotoxic, but it still IS (very slightly) neurotoxic.

However, methamphetamine is very neurotoxic, and is often seen in ecstacy.

So, is ecstacy bad for your brain? Usually, but if you want to minimize damage - get molly or a reputable source.

Well... that depends alot on how you use it.

Most studies seem to suggest that occasional, reasonable use is fairly harmless. Conversely, excessive dosage - whether in dose, duration, or frequency - can be fairly neurotoxic. That neurotoxicity can be easily prevented, either by antioxidants such as vitamin C or ALA, or by an ample coadministration of tryptophan.

...if you're doing it infrequently, in a moderate dosage, it's currently suggested by the research to be less neurotoxic than a lot of everyday things, and doubly so if you engage in responsible use with regards to cosuppementation.

If you're like some of the idiots who walk in here and whine about how they feel like crap after staying awake for a week on confirmed pure MDMA, well - they almost certainly did serious damage in the course of that week, and it's not like they shouldn't have seen it coming.

...and just for shits and giggles...

These data demonstrate that MDMA when injected directly into the brain produces 5-HT release but no neurotoxicity

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11351932

...but, yes... check the dosages and frequencies on the neurotoxicity studies. In addition to the bajillion studies which show how to prevent neurotoxicity... those dosage schedules might just tell you something.

i do not know how to word this correctly but i will try my best.

What im wondering is are these long term damages permament? or can it be reversed? Now i know this depends on frequency of use etc, but generally can these changes in the brain be reversed?

JP Will probly know more about this then I do, but from what I know the damages can't be reversed. Hence, the reason responsible drug use is such a good thing.

Thanks joe for clearing up the retardedness about this thread. MDMA is neurotoxic but hardly compared to most drugs. There is a reason that a bunch of research is going on with it in regards to therapy.

Blah, regardless of whether mdma is bad for you or not, the shit ur cop'n off ur local skeezebag drug dealer is more then likely full of amphetamines and other harmful bullshit chemicals. Pharmaceutical grade mdma is hard to obtain, so alot of the shit on the streets is produced through crude synthesis techniques. I honestly don't think X is good for anyone, if you abuse the little fuckers they will lay down some irreperable damage on your brain. You want a euphoric experience??? Chug a bottle of black currant juice (the kind peeps buy for detoxification) and pop like a gram/gram and a half of shrooms.....

just my opinion

That's not what he thinks you dumb cunt. When he says, "Pharmaceutical grade mdma" , He's not referring to your local CVS or Rite Aid producing or carrying MDMA. Fucking moron. He's referring to when you make a score of X in a club off some shady fuck you don't even know, its not gonna be a PHARAMECUTICAL GRADE drug... (all that means is high quality, in this case PURE MDMA.)

Youre dumb as fuck bro, way to carry the flag for this band of 'tards..

here's an article about longterm X use:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2006/apr/04/drugsandalcohol.drugs1

"Doctors from London University have revealed details of what they believe is the largest amount of ecstasy ever consumed by a single person. Consultants from the addiction centre at St George's Medical School, London, have published a case report of a British man estimated to have taken around 40,000 pills of MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy, over nine years. The heaviest previous lifetime intake on record is 2,000 pills.

Though the man, who is now 37, stopped taking the drug seven years ago, he still suffers from severe physical and mental health side-effects, including extreme memory problems, paranoia, hallucinations and depression. He also suffers from painful muscle rigidity around his neck and jaw which often prevents him from opening his mouth. The doctors believe many of these symptoms may be permanent."

But I guess you would know more than accredited doctors in London wouldn't ya? Get your PhD/MD yet?? Fucking ignorant jackass....

but please-- by all means, all of you idiots, just keep on taking ecstacy and convince yourself that it's not harmful. we don't need you losers around anyway.

You can't use that guy as an example; it's misleading because he was an extreme (the MOST extreme) case. You quoted it yourself: 'what [doctors] believe is the largest amount of ecstasy ever consumed by a single person.'

That's like using Syd Barret as an example for the dangers of LSD. To say that suggests that taking LSD drastically increases your chances of going insane; it's implicit, ambiguous, and above all misleading.

The most recent studies on MDMA (see my new thread in BLTC) have actually shown that MDMA is hardly neurotoxic at all. It came 18th on the list of most dangerous chemicals taken in the UK - fucking poppers and khat where the only drugs that were less dangerous!!!
Furthermore, the same studies have shown that the majority of people who stop using it for a year will have their brains turn completely back to normal; you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Get your facts straight and don't use the same fucking tactics our government uses to fuck with the general public.

Woah, no shit, a guy had long-term effects from taking 40,000 ecstasy pills in 9 years? That's 40,000 pills / 3,285 days = 13 ecstasy pills every day for nine years. Holy shit, I bet you could fuck yourself up just taking that much aspirin or tryptophan. That's kind of like those people who die from water intoxication... only you've just told us all that water is toxic and we need to stop consuming it; look somebody died from drinking way more water in one hour than any reasonable human being would!! HOLY SHIT, EVERYONE RUN AWAY! That stuff is CORROSIVE man, have you ever seen what it can do to a bicycle frame? You know it's used as an industrial solvent, right? Now if only we could stop nuclear power plants from pumping gallons of it into the atmosphere every day...

Geez, man, what the hell. I really hope that you were joking just like the other "ecstasy will kill you" guy. If you abuse ANY substance, it is bad for you, okay?! EVEN MARIJUANA! Guess what happens if you smoke shit tons of weed every day? You get tar in your lungs, hey, what do you know about that! But the guy who smokes a joint on the weekend sometimes doesn't have any significant long-term effects on his respiratory system. Good God, it's almost like taking a shit ton of drugs is worse than taking them in moderation... oh, wait a minute...

Once again, math and "life comprehension" FTW. Welcome to the bottom half of the Daily Competence Line.

P.S. No way in hell those pills were decent-purity MDMA. That's another factor you forgot: cuts. Check out ecstasydata.org for some examples - people cut their ecstasy with some weird shit. Sometimes they just sell you ephedrine or DXM in a pressed pill. Sometimes you get some weird-ass phenethylamine that ends up killing 13 people and making big news (PMA, I'm looking at you). People who don't know about chemistry really shouldn't dick around with this shit. I am not intimately familiar with the synthesis for MDMA but I know the basics (Wacker oxidation to get MDP2P from safrole and then get your fuckin nitrogen-containing group on there) and I'd bet money that, given the nature of the class of drugs MDMA belongs to, it's easy to synthesize something else entirely that COULD be toxic, if only because you dose it like MDMA when in fact it could be stronger.

Whatever, just thinking on paper.

Default Re: Is ecstasy really that bad for your brain?

to my knowledge there is no proof of long term damage. its still to early to know. mdma was made illegal in 84 or so. the 80s - 90s was when it was booming. who knows maybe long term use can increase risk of cancer, shut down organs earlier, increase chance of mental disease. id be shocked if people even started connecting the dots to it yet. its kind of like vaccines and autism. how long have they been putting mercury in them and only recently has there been some buzz of a connection.

good rule of thumb if you see or hear something about drugs outside a drug forum its always false. it might have a hint of truth but will be completely wrong. unless you also believe that your brain is an egg.

also the wholes in your brain myth was something like i just mentioned. they show a scan of brain activity after mdma use and it actually looks like there are wholes in your brain. unfortunately the fail to tell you the scan is to show brain activity not actual matter. if e was that bad for your brain and people did it that much they wouldnt have a brain left and at the very least lose serious body functions.

Sorry to single you out, but the evidence you gave to backup your claims was full of shit. Whether you intended it or not, the fact is you shouldn't use extreme examples as if they were representative of a wider demographic; that is precisely what tabloid newspapers and government studies do to put spin on a topic.

Yes, if you ingest 40,000 Es over however many years you will fuck yourself up. There's no point debating that; too much of anything [good or bad] is bad.

Yet, the idiot who took that many pills isn't even an example of a long term user; he's nothing more than an idiot and shouldn't be entered into any debate on long term E use.
