| Cunning Linguists Languages and their use. What languages do you speak and why? What do words really mean? Can you say things in one language that you can't say in another? Should there be a national language? How many languages should a person know and what are they? |

Blessed
Are there two pronunciations for the word 'Blessed'?
Is there 'blest' and 'bless-ed'? Or is it the same word with different pronunciations? Or do the different pronunciations have different meanings?
I ask because I have heard a song where it is said 'blest' but heard it in Church as 'bless-ed' and 'blest'.
Eg, "Bless-ed is He who comes in the name of the Lord." or something similar, 'blest' doesn't fit as well or maybe it's just the way I've heard it and got used to it being said and also, eg, "He was blest by the priest." fits and 'bless-ed' doesn't.
Is it just what sounds good to the ears and both have the exact same meaning (same spelling anyway) or there are slightly different meanings and this goes along with the lines of the pronunciations?
I personally thought they had the same meanings and it was just preference in how you say it, but then I heard the same person say it both ways differently.
So what do you think and how do you say it?

Re: Blessed
Good question, to be honest I don't know. I'm assuming its the same as 'spelled' and 'spelt' but that for some reason (style?) the 'ed' is still pronounced, something which otherwise died out a couple of hundred years ago.

Re: Blessed
Yeah similar but different. Spelled can be 'spelt' or 'spell'd' right? But with blessed it's either 'blest' or 'bless-ed' as in 'bless-ehd'. I reckon bless-ed sounds the best though.

Re: Blessed
to me all "ssed" sounds make my jaw go down a bit by staying in that position and "lest" close my mouth fast and the jaw back.

I think it can only be said 'spell'd' in American, to Brit ears that just sounds wrong.
Sometimes a word can take on the pronunciation of another or it can develop into a simple style choice.
I'm guessing correctly it is 'he blest' (past tense) and 'he was blessed'.

Re: Blessed
Bless-ed = adjective.
The blessed Virgin Mary. Blessed be the Lamb of God.
Blessed (blest) = past simple and past perfect verb form.
God blessed his people.
I personally think there's nothing wrong with pronouncing both as 'blest'.
