'Cause in this case the latter is more beneficial to his health. If he's ingesting melatonin for a good reason (not just to get fuxx0red) and is curious as to whether or not you could achieve the same benefits as compared to oral administration, it's more proper to tell him not to smoke pills (which, btw, is more helpful in general).
