I know this may seem like a really obvious question, but what affect do drugs have on intelligence?

I'm not taking about drug abuse, it's obvious to me what happens when you do too much crack/ketamine/etc but are these crackheads any stupider than us? Are they just unable to process there thoughts into words? or have there thoughts simply degraded.

what I'm talking about is recreational use. I know these drugs all affect neurotransmitter levels, but do they damage actual brain matter? Will i be less able to comprehend and absorb information. How bad is damage from drugs really? (Is there even any damage from non chronic use?) and by damage i mean damage to my mental facilities

Right now I'm not noticing any obvious mental afflictions as of yet, but my mind is something I cherish.

The government does not want us to do drugs because they need routine to work, they try to enslave everyone into the rountine which they have developed in order to keep things the way they want it.

I did 60 mg of iprocin (4-ho-dipt)... I thought I had finally made it to insanity... I was looking deeper and deeper and when I thought it could not get deeper, new patterns showed up and then there was a spaceship-like structure and some aliens elf-like creatures were around it. And I saw those dimensional creatures made of energy... If I was to abuse this stuff, i think I would go insane mentally. If I integrate and space my use, there is no problem and I will become smarter, more aware of all this fucking crazy shit.

Paranoid government conspiracies aside.
I smoked weed 2 or 3 times a day for about 2 years.

It was quite habitually addictive. My brain turned to sludge. It's not that I couldn't do the same processes if I really tried, it was more a state of mind where you try to concentrate, and you drift off, once you drift off you forget what you were just talking about.

Also, I started to stutter, and forget what I was saying mid-sentance. I'd start talking to someone, then the haze would set in and I'd have to ask what I was just talking about.

It started off great, you think you're onto something, that you can see a little deeper than everyone else - That you're somewhat more mystical or something.

In the end it's just delusion.

I don't think Marijuana abuse has much of a long term effect, as about 3 months after I quit my habitual attraction with her, I was back to my former mental efficiency.

This is just one experience however and I'm sure the human mind is much too subjective for a 'one size fits all' exp.

I tend to agree with 'everything in moderation'. You just have to have the mental will to control yourself - Easier said than done.

That's what happened to me, but I wat an idiot that kept dwelling on my bad trips. For almost a year I was never happy. NEVER.
Took a longggg time for me to get back to normal. I was always thinking only about negative things and i didn't feel like going anywhere in life. after months of CONVINCING myself back to who I was, I actually have a future again.
in other words, it all depends on the person.

There's only myself to blame for it, not the drugs. It was all because of the altered mindset that I decided to dwell on after bad trip after bad trip.
