Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
This bill just came to my attention and I thought anyone from PA might want to know about it. It was amended in June so that if any immediate family petitions to a court that you have a drug problem then the court can "order you to undergo a drug and alcohol assessment performed by a psychiatrist, a licensed psychologist with specific training in drug and alcohol assessment and treatment or a certified addiction counselor." And then the court can force you into "involuntary drug and alcohol treatment, including inpatient services, for up to ninety days". And after the 90 days are up they can put you back in for 90 days, indefinitely.
So much for due process.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
Our country was founded on drugs and alc. hemp, mj, opium all used in the 1800s-early 1900s. Most of our "founding fathers" recognized ones or just the everyday early citizens used drugs or alcohol.

once our generation (kids born after 1980) get into office or start doing things that are productive, drugs will be decriminalized.

Dayy-aamm. I live in PA. Whatever though. I mean, what family member is going to go through all that legal trouble to have you see a shrink about your drugs use? Doesn't seem very efficient.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
Seems to me to be completely unconstitutional. If this occurred to me, I would hire a lawyer and take that shit to your state Supreme Court and if not their to the US Supreme Court, which is made for shit like this. Glad I don't live in Pennsylvania, damn would that suck.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
Yeah,i'm from PA as well. The alcohol laws here are fucking retarded. You can only buy liquor from a specific store (before 9) and beer from a distributor. Can't sell any form of alcohol unless it's a specific distributor (meaning no booze in grocery stores, not even wine). If you buy more then 1 thing you have to pay for it all as separate orders and carry each item to your car individually.
The other night I had to go in the store, grab my case of beer, and go back to my car three fucking times.

That's an example of your store being retarded -- not the state. I used buy more than one item at a time in the liquor store and walk out with them all the time. Same for bars (for 6-packs) and distributors (for cases).
But yeah, the PA LCB (liquor control board) does kinda blow. The alcohol's cheaper across the border in Ohio, also, since we tax the fuck out of it.
As for the "lock up law", it's probably more a formalization of something that could be done before. It sounds quite a bit like the process for involuntary commitment for mental health issues, extended to substance abuse. Since psychology and psychiatry consider addiction to be a mental illness, it's not terribly surprising that they want to treat addicts like people who are mentally ill and are potential threats to themselves and others -- I mean, that's exactly how the government sees them anyway.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
I don't know where the hell you all live, but in Philly you can buy beer no problem from a lot of places. Liquor and wine sale is really controlled by the state, so that's another story. This Act doesn't really seem constitutional but neither are half of the ones that manage to pass.

The constitution doesn't exist anymore. It has been completely over-ridden. There is no such thing as "unconstitutional" these days.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
Yeah it pisses me off so much that we can't just simply go to Giant Eagle and buy beer, we have to find a specific distributor.
And to whoever made the heroin comment, it's sooo damn easy to find in Pittsburgh, it's ridiculous. But you rarely see junkies just chillin' on the streets, so it's all good.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
Live in PA as well (Philly), yeah PA has some pretty dumbass laws especially pertaining to alcohol but I personally was never really bothered by it all. Interesting bill though, not that it would ever affect me since my family would never petition for me to moved to a rehabilitation center.

There is a bunch of crazy ass homeless people around Oakland. The PGH and Philly both have active street drug trade, with lots and lots of H. Philly is alot worse in every aspect though. Pittsburgh is heaven compared to Philly.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
I guess you're right, Oakland does have a bunch of homeless guys under bridges and underpasses and shit. But Pittsburgh doesn't really reek of drugs or anything. Yeah, sure there's a lot going on, but you wouldn't be able to tell just from looking at it. It hides it visually pretty well.

Not being able to buy liquor on Sundays is a real pain in the ass too.
Also the first grocery store in the state to acquire a liquor license is literally 500 yd from my house.

Re: Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Act
When I was in Pittsburgh with said friend, we each railed a stamp of dope, and then preceded to walk around the town smoking a fat joint. It was near where there is this lift that takes down from the bridge. I can't really explain it any better as I'm not a native of the area and have only been there a couple of times, and every time I've been there I've been fucked up.
