Marijuana Impairs Brain Function?
I'm sure short-term, yeah, but I mean long-term.
http://www.nida.nih.gov/MarijBroch/teenpg13-14.html#brain
Which cites this study:
# Harder. S. and Reitbrock, S. Concentration-effect relationship of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and prediction of psychotropic effects after smoking marijuana. International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 35(4): 155-159, 1997.
I'm looking to obtain this study, but does this mean long-term brain function?
Has any study shown a connection between daily use and developing brains of adolescents?
I'm not looking for some bias-BLTC bullshit, like how I frequently hear from regulars that heroin has no long-term effects on the brain.
Where can I find studies about marijuana specifically? Any websites that keeps archives of them? I'm interested in studying the pharmacology myself.

marijuana CAN fuck you up. it may be safer than most drugs however it's still a drug and if not used correctly can have adverse effects.

From the website you linked:
"However, there might be a different set of circumstances to a 12-year-old whose nervous system is still developing."
Not only that, it says in that study that there was a tiny bit of impairment. Impairment, nonetheless. I'm just wondering about adolescent studies though.

Your not going to find actual experiments using adolescents, just data and what not.

Well, we need to start. Or something.
http://www.irishscientist.ie/2004/contents.asp?contentxml=04isp92a.xml&contentxsl=is04pages.xsl
Damage to non-adult rat brains. Of course, the only problem, as with most studies, is that they are friggin' rats. If we make the correlation though...

Hippocampus cell growth? Wonderful! But then why the small impairment in memory...

Can you find any study that indicates heroin or any other opiate has long term effects on the brain? Not casual links, but actual evidence? Shut the fuck up, then.
Why do you even care about this?

Who gives a fuck if there are any studies that indicate whether or not opiates have any long term effects. Maybe there hasn't been a study because its common sense? Opiates have effect on the human brain. period. If you evenremember what opiates feel like 80 years later then it has obviously made a long term effect. Who the fuck are you to tell someone to shut the fuck up you fucking faggot?

Yeah no problem.
I think it's already proven that THC does damage adolescents' nervous system and brain cells, in "small amounts", question is, how many 10-year-olds smoke ganja every day?
Brain cells in adolescents develop quick, so dead brain cells would be replaced quick, anyways, it's like the way you workout to basically injure the muscle so it grows stronger...

any experience will slightly alter the development of adolescants. everything that has ever happened will shape who you are.. so obviously spending alot of those critical years under the influence of a mind altering substance WILL affect your development.

He's talking about your physical development in regards to structure compared to the average person. He isn't talking about the effects on the individual's mind or consciousness.

Uhhh, the CNS doesn't undergo anabolism as muscle tissue does, as far as I know. Neurons also tend to be much more complex. All muscle tissue is, is a bundle of coiled proteins. If the right conditions are in place, muscle tissues basically assemble themselves.
Neurons are nothing like muscle tissue, the CNS has very limited regenerative abilities. The brain has the quality of plasticity, but it cannot regenerate itself to any significant degree. It can just compensate my making new connections between pre-existing neurons, to make up for the dead/missing neurons.
Also, brain damage that is incurred during times of heightened neurological growth tends to be more detrimental, than if it is incurred after one's brain is mostly done developing. This is why drinking alcohol in one's teen years is said to be so damaging. The fact that so much growth is occurring in the brain at this time, means that that growth can be more easily offset by other factors.
None of this necessarily has to do with the neurotoxicity of cannabanoids, but if it does retard brain growth to any degree, the effects would be more significant during periods of heightened growth, such as adolescence.

Re: Marijuana Impairs Brain Function?
All great answers, but this is directed to the (wo)man above me.
You bring up that the brain creates new connections after cells die. That could bring up an argument that killing brain cells could indeed make your mind work faster, or in a better way.
There is no possible way to proove any theories about marijuanna. Obviuosly it has adverse effects, if the person lets it.
Drugs aren't neccesarily bad, its the people using them.

Not really. Each neuron is capable of having several connections to several other neurons. If you reduce the number of neurons, you're also reducing the number of possible connections that could exist.

Re: Marijuana Impairs Brain Function?
Well, completely outside of any scientific study whatsoever, I've always thought that long term habitual marijuana usage impairs the brain. Have you ever met any old hippies who kept smoking weed after the 60s/70s instead of quitting and becoming a "productive" member of society? They always seem a little slow in conversation. They still seem fairly intelligent, but their ability to focus and sustain conversations always appears to have been wrecked. Maybe it's not just weed, maybe it can be attributed to other drugs. I can't really tell.
That being said, I see no reason to stop smoking weed other than trying to save my poor lungs. Smoking weed makes me happy, and I imagine it will keep doing so. Smoking a joint after I get home from whatever job I get will probably make life that much easier to deal with. Who knows what will happen, though?

I agree, I just think people shouldn't delude themselves about what they're doing. Especially if they're in their earlier teens. Weed enthusiasts often like to think that weed is harmless. I'm sure it's a very mild drug, as far as psychotropic drugs go, but I still think people should weigh the pros/cons of what they may or may not be doing to their brain. Younger teens also tend to have not as developed judging faculties, so they're also more likely to ignore this possibility in favor of their more hedonistic inclinations. I simply think it's a possibility that should be considered, since one can never turn back the clock.

Re: Marijuana Impairs Brain Function?
Here it is. Marijuana can fuck you up. It can kinda open your eyes to some things, and if you get too into the new ideas you've been opened up to you can just stop doing... everything. Because really, you realize society is bullshit. Is it really BAD that marijuana does this? I dunno.
I smoke an 8th of headies a week, and my grades (this is all I can gauge my "success" by, since I'm 16)
Have improved.
It's like this:
Fall Sophomore Year - Happy, mostly sober, almost straight A's
Spring Sophomore Year- Depressed, popping pills left and right, straight C's.
Fall Junior Year First Quarter- Mostly sober, bored.. straight b's
Fall Jr. Year 2nd Quarter- Daily chiefing, all a's and b's.
so it appears it has improved my grades only because "if they go down, mom will blame weed, and I will be in trouble!"
