Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
Reason I made this thread is to share another great resource for those of us who are more interested in drugs for reasons other than getting high. Fitting drugs into other perspectives and domains of knowledge is like adding an MAOI to DMT. Granted, this forum is not the best place for this kind of thing, but those of you who would benefit know who you are.

Well, not sure about entheogens, haven“t ever tried em, not sure if i want to, but any kind of stimulant makes life worth living. Suddenly after some adderall/base/ritalin or even coffee your school/work performance just jumps. That's as far as drugs go into other areas of knowledge for me ;).
I dunno man, every time I got proper stoned it just fucked with my philosophical views instead of making me think more open mindedly.

Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
Drugs are for having fun and getting high.
Drugs, especially psychedelic drugs, are tools which can be used for many purposes. Having fun and getting all fucked up is one purpose. Learning about life, reality and how to better oneself is another purpose. What a user gets out of their drug use depends not on the drug, but entirely on them, the user. A tool is only as good as its user.
I think the popular mentality among recreational drug users that the only purpose in using is to get fucked up and escape from their life is one of the greater tragedy's of prohibition. What a world it would be if everyone was educated about how these drugs go beyond the material realm, if everyone who used them did so to change their life instead of to escape from it, if they did so to understand everything better. What a society we would become ... and that might have more to do with prohibition then anything else.
Entheogens are for faggot poets and shit with stupid beards and glasses who date ugly bitches who don't shave.
People who fall under such a stereotype, like most people who fall into stereotypes, are probably trying to become something they are not and like most people who do that, fail miserably. People like that are not trying to better themselves, are not gaining anything from their practices, but are trying to fulfill some material need which is holding them back from actual progress and development. They are chasing their desire to become something they see as cool, and have completely missed the point.
Smart people think for themselves.

I was joking around. Almost everyone I have met IRL who called drugs "entheogens" was a complete moron who wanted to be seen as some kind of enlightened shaman. I have nothing against people trying to better themselves.

I'd have to agree there. I stopped using the term entheogen in person after I hung around with some of the guys who were also using the term. Most of them were so far removed from reality it was a trip just watching them interact with the world. Reintegration is part of bettering yourself with psychedelics, tripping four days a week thinking you're an enlightened spiritual guru is delusional thinking and abuse of the compounds.

Awesome. My point in posting wasn't to offend you, but to state what I did. I'm glad that you can understand the capabilities of use can go beyond material pleasure.
And yeah, theres a lot of morons out there ... within a variety of stereotypes. Too many people aren't taught to think for themselves, and end up following some sort of group, trying to live up to another's idea of how life should be, of what means what. Thats another great obstacle in our progression towards a greater society.

You didn't offend me. I have learned a lot from trips in the past, and almost every time I trip on a new substance the experience is meaningful in some way. I just think that most of the "entheogen people" need to lighten up. Forcing life changing experiences rarely works. Having a good time on drugs is usually better than having an shitty to average time trying to dissect your brain, at least in my opinion.

Good, and great. Thats because when people do something for the first time, people tend to be a lot more observant.

Yes they do, and yes, I agree that does not work. Its all about listening, not focusing on what one may expect.

Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
Totally agree with where you're coming from with that one. Anyone who has ever had a strong trip has revelations of some sort that don't really apply anymore when you go back to sober life. So far as I've noticed, the only way you can gain something beneficial from psychedelics is to learn about some other philosophical ideas and gain more knowledge about more conventional things. The nature of "true" entheogens is that they remove a lot of the conditioning you have gone through growing up with the cultural assumptions and paradigms ingrained into your experience. The only reason why you can't retain psychedelic knowledge into your ordinary life is because there isn't a context to put them in that makes sense with the world you see.
If you've ever had a +4 trip on shooms or something, You realize that everything is about love and interconnected and dissolution of the ego. I propose that the ego per se is actually the conscious/unconscious barrier that reinforces external reality and rejects the raw experience of psychedelics. If you were a baby again, you would see the world as a blooming, buzzing confusion that you are eventually conditioning to make sense of in a way that everyone sees.
The purpose of entheogens is not to lose touch with this normal reality, but rather to see it in context in a more beautiful and elegant way. Just like how people in the industrialized 1800's saw natural phenomenon such as speciation as different creatures that god designed, evolution put things into an elegant model that was not based on blind faith. Psychedelic thinking can provide those same models to more than biology to things such as the mind, history, and even natural processes such as evolution itself.
I would go into more detail about specific ideas that are applicable to real life/science/academia/social implications, but i gtg for now.

Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
I have seriously strong views that most psychedelics and many other drugs have extreme uses in psychotherapy and can be used to unlock hidden depths and issues that even months or years of therapy on a sober mind could never get close to unlocking.
I was actually discussing this and my drug use with my parents after opening up after what could be best described as a nervous breakdown and my parents actually agreed with me... Something really weird for those who have no knowledge apart from what they have been told on tv and are pretty much anti-drug.
I actually mentioned to my mum that tripping could help me find the cause of my problems rather than covering them up with weed/anti depressants.
I also have a huge interest in natural halucogens and Entheogenic use of any psychoactive substances (legal or illegal.)
If anyone has an E-books or websites on any of these subjects that could help further my knowledge please post them.

Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
Well, for a lot of people who need therapy psychedelics actually kinda fucking suck. I'm not gonna take shrooms/acid anytime soon if DXM already sent me into a full psychosis. I wouldn't call mind-expansion therapy. It's cool though allright, like taking a roll bringing you that much closer to your friends, and a whole lot closer to the people you didn't know before.
Any of you guys really had a drug improve your life? Unless prescription drugs count, I'd have to say no. Still, think about how strange it is that less than a grain of salt of a certain substance (100 mcg LSD?) can get you to think radically different for a day, maybe even change your whole outlook on life. Really shows how small the things at the root of our consciousness are :)

I'd glad that your parents are open-minded and actually care about you rather than caring about society's abstract moral values. You should really appreciate that. As for providing resources, well..the thing about learning from psychedelics isn't so much the psychedelics rather than your own curiosity into your own experiences that don't make sense with the culture around you. Institutions such as science or religion claim to have these particular answers to what humans are, but they are very far removed from direct experience.
Some good places to start if you are really looking for personal spirituality and not some bullshit cultural abstraction that claims to have all the answers, you first must think for yourself and not assume anything.
listen to the podcasts by terence mckenna especially like this:
http://www.matrixmasters.net/blogs/?p=242
Listen to the other podcasts as well, read books about anthropology, psychology, and biology. These are actually prerequisites to get a true context of psychedelic ideas because they aren't removed from reality or escapist, they are in fact, the most rational form on conjecture into reality and these ideas don't dismiss other beliefs as pure bullshit and ignore them, but try to combine everything into an inclusive, complex view of nature. Mainstream cultural explanations by their intrinsic nature to propagate, come up with simple models that under any rational light are utterly bound to fail.

Re: Let's get some serious drug discussion going on...
Or those who prefer learning to getting fucked up.
about getting high on information
QFT!
I really hate the mentality that drugs are just there to get fucked up on. Sure they are great fun to get fucked up on but they are also useful tools and in the process of getting fucked up. You can also learn a lot about yourself and other people as well as learn to treat the drug you are taking your body, and your mind with a little more respect.
The other day I was talking to my dad, I knew he had a hugely anti view to drugs and had had a bad experience on weed which I thought was the reason he hated drugs (as well as the propaganda.)
I also noted that he always used to say if I mentioned mushrooms (back when he didn't know about my use) not to use them and that they fuck you up.
Whilst opening up to my parents I was talking about my experiences on mushrooms and LSD and how they had changed my perception and outlook on life and had all been genuine purposive experiences making me a better person. This is when my mum mentioned that my dad and auntie had both had bad trips in the past. I ended up having a pretty deep conversation with my parents about how my dad didnt have the right sort of mind to enjoy a trip because he was too close minded and didnt think outside the box leaving his mind unable to comprehend what was happening to it.
This leads me to the point that some people may not have the mentality to be capable of using drugs for any more than to get fucked up and will only enjoy pretty visuals, perception changed and maybe a little mind fuck with no real in depth psychological side to a trip. Also those people with the mentality incapable of using a trip for this purpose may be more likely to suffer a bad trip because they have minds incapable of handling, using and even enjoying this mind fuck leading to a bad trip such as in the case of my dad.
Because of my pure interest and passion for drugs it has lead me to spend a lot more time reading about drugs than actually doing them. I also crave knowledge and think that rather than fucking me up every experience I have had has made me a much better, more spiritual and knowlegable person.
