Default growin some shrooms!

okay, so ive noticed prices for shrooms are INSANE (40$ for an eighth!) and thus im determined to grow them myself. i have just watched and learned several steps in growing them and although it WAS VERY confusing at first, watching the videos with it helped very much.

basically you create a substrate, which would be something for the spores and shrooms to eat and grow from, from this, you sterilize it in the jars in a pressure cooker of sorts and then procede to inject WITH A STERILIZED SYRINGE the spore water. wait a few days for it to completely turn white, and then wait for some pinheads to appear before transferring it all into a container for which the shrooms will actually grow and mature.

this seems EXTREMELY easy and much cleaner than the overly thought method of throwing it on shit and waiting. the whole process shouldnt take more than a month and a half depending on spores

So my plan thus far. Once i have obtained spores from a source(that i am still looking around for) i will start this process and hopefully attain a decent amount of shrooms and continue to create more and more. i will then slowly reduce the price of these to hopefully force other people to reduce them as well, and perhaps put more interest in them amongst my town.i am not planning on being open about growing them myself but instead say that i have a connection in the country that will hook me up at a reasonable price and deny any knowledge to him. if anything happens b/c of dealers or such, i can always stop dealing and keep them to myself/close friends.

sounds like a solid plan to me. anyone here ACTUALLY grow these devilish bastards who could tell me some things that would probably be vital/helpful? or know people who grow them?

these things arent exactly hard, but not necessarily easy either, to grow so i think SOMEONE around heres gotta dampen the price eh?

anyones opinions? thoughts?

ALSO for those concerned, psycobilin spores ARE NOT controlled whatsoever, it is perfectly legal for myself or any other individual to have them in possesion for reasearch purposes.

I'm in the same boat as you man, shrooms are basically nonexistant in my town, except I dont have the means to grow indoors, but outdoors on the other hand... Good luck though, as I will need it too.

Cleanliness and don't tell anyone. Also, cut your pint cakes in half, dunk and roll after they are done colonizing.

anyway thanks guys. im still reading up on alot of these. i kinda wanna start with these penis looking ones which not only include hilarity but apparently a pretty damn strong trip. problem with em tho is that they dont produce very many spores and grabbing em could be a problem. but eh, i can always try to get prints from a the ones with flanged caps(alot of em actually have caps in the shape of a penis)

but yea this is something im really going to enjoy, botany is kinda interesting to me.

and yea i figured im not telling anyone at all, and considering growing them elsewhere. but its a pretty much hassle free plant. as long as you get the feed right and sterilize everything (well and harvest things before they rot) then your pretty much set.

also, how do you dry them? they rot easy but...yet you dry them? how do you go about that, just put em all in a rack really quick and devoid them from humidity? could i put them in an oven for an hour at like 150??

meh still, going to seem worthwhile.

and those amantine or whatever mushrooms(red caps white spots) look AMAZING, not really so much of a high as just look cool as shit.

Have you got yourself ideas on your incubator setup? If it's your first go, I'd suggest cakes or the neglect tek if you want to make it even easier.

yea i was planning on doing the cake thing

now let me get this straight...incubation is from injecting the spores to the cake being covered right?

yea i was planning on keeping them in masonry jars(thanks to the tek) and when i birth them put them in a semi-air tight container(two clear tuppaware)

But, idk, cakes seem a lil ineffecient, after i get my first flush i was thinking i could layer the bottom of my fruiting chamber with vermiculate and BRF mix(same as the cakes) with some water and a thicker layer of BRF on top to hopefully encourage growth inside the entire thing. two or three maturing cakes on top of that and a few caps laying against the bottom and i think it could produce a good big flush :)

uhm fruiting setup will be as follows

an aqaurium or two tuppaware container(more likely aqarium)
in the lid ill probably set up a computer fan or two
eventually stop by a botany store and grab something to rig into the aqaurium to mist it if not ive got plenty of water bottles :)
going to be in a semi light room, thats probably always around 75-80* if less i have heat lamps.

really i actually have MANY of the supplies already. thank you reptiles :D

Don't put them in the oven. The heat might destroy some of the psyclobin. Go out and buy a vegetable dryer from Walmart or some place. You just pop them in there and they suck all the moisture out. Nice and easy.

would i just grab a box and throw them in with the packets?

i got plenty of silica packets too. should i just keep them in there for a day and check on em, or for a couple hours checking every so often/maybe change drying chemicals?

also, is it the entire mushroom or just the cap that contains psyclobin?

The cap contains a little bit more psyclobin but the stem still has plenty. No need to use silica packets. Just go with the vegetable drying method.

I use a computer powered fan box. Basically, it's a 4" wide by 8" tall tupperware box with a heavyduty computer fan(the ones that attatch to the motherboard) that has been fitted onto the lid. Then, I just throw about an oz at a time until I systematically dry them all. Works fast and well.

Everything except for the spores contain psilocin.

I would do rubbermaid box with about 6" of perlite and various 1" holes drilled throught the sides. No fan needed and you will have near 100% RH. Your plan works, but it is sort of outdated.

okay so fans may be unneccacary but what if in the fruiting chamber i put on one side an exhaust fan, and then on the other the same kinda fan, but blowing INWARDS and covered by a tube connected to a humidifier?

keep it at a low setting and then i wouldnt have to worry about spraying etc...

ah anyway, its going to be sweet so i can only hope to save enough money to get those spores(only thing i need if i just want a basic setup)

You can get a big ol' bag of perlite for like $10 at a garden store. Trust me, you will be sooo much happier. With perlite and holes, you just soak perlite, put cakes in, wait and harvest. A coolmist isn't good enough.

Just use the PF tek for inoculation your first time around. I'm not a big fan of having to mist and fan it out 4x a day, so you'd be better off finding a good guide on shroomery for a better fruiting chamber.

Pftek is very easy, depending on how much you want to grow there are better methods but for personal use and for your friends 8-10 cakes will do you fine.

The sterilisation and inoculation of the cakes is the most important stage and I cannot stress how important a sterile environment is. Any contamination and that entire cake is fucked which is a lot considering one cake could yield up to an oz+ dry with successive fruiting. Also try not to use too much of the spores inoculating each cake because as long as there are spores they will spread rapidly. Rather than using an excess of spores make sure that a small amount of spores are evenly distributed around the cake to ensure that the mycelium spreads fast.

Another useful tip is that two normal buckets work great for an incubator. Fill one bucket 1/4 of the way with water and stick a cheap 25w aquarium heater set at about 20c then put the other bucket inside the water filled bucket. This will push the water right up the side of the bucket to the rim (and probably spill it over the top) as long as you keep this topped up it will ensure that heat is evenly distributed around the interior bucket.

A drop in temperature and light will trigger fruiting and it is at this point where a totally sterile environment is unessesary. It is still important to keep the clear fruiting container clean and sealed (A fine cloth is good keeping contaminants out and allows for gas exchange.) Also make sure that you change the perlite or other fruiting substrate after each successive fruiting. The only problems I had at this stage was that towards the end of the last (4th) Fruiting the laterite began to mould, although at this point the mycelium was strong enough to withstand this invasion but the mushrooms also became contaminated with small flys.

Dunking is also very important and submerging the cakes which are very light and must be submerged in a bucket of cold sterile but de-chlorinated water and containing no other chemicals for around 12 hours (but no more.) This will increase yields and will also help greatly to trigger fruiting when some cakes can be reluctant to fruit.

Good luck, shroomery.org

okay im slightly confused. what is dunking exactly? taking an already inocculated cake OUT of the container(as in, the mycelium has covered it completely and its a solid mass) and hold it in water? because it said take them in their jars and it confused me alot. like it said before birthing so i got all screwed up. basically, do i dunk BEFORE or after i birth?

now with the fruiting chamber, could i place a few perlite slabs in there, birth the cakes onto said slabs, fill it with the water, and then drain all of the water through a hole in the bottom? this would probably be safer and remove several steps in the process.

and i heard CO2 also could increase yeilds, i probably shouldnt ask as a beginner, but would say spraying CO2 from a paintball gun a day/week/whatever provide any difference?

Just put the fully colinised cakes in a container and fully submerge by placing a plate over them for 12 hours then continue to fruit them.

With the fruiting chamber you are probably washing the perlite throughly with water in a seive and then just dumping it in the chamber and spreading to about an inch thick.

I dont know about co2, iv never heard of it so its probably not worth it but rather than using a paintball gun you would be better making a co2 reactor from a 2l bottle, yeast and some sugar... Thats what I use for co2 for a aquarium plants and it works a treat.

I don't think CO2 is good for them, because isn't that the purpose of fanning out the fruiting chamber? To remove CO2?

I would just stick to the tek, for a good fruiting chamber you can buy an air pump, run it to two bubble wands (go to a pet store), put the bubble wands underneath the perlite after it's been cleaned and is wet. All of this is inside a plastic clear storage bin.

With the bubble wands and air pump you won't need to fan out the chamber ever and it'll keep moisture very high.

spores101 has good deals on spore syringes and they're legit.

Seriously though, don't go about fucking around with your first time, just follow the guide as best as possible. You'll come out with some shrooms.

Especially since he's posted his pic in RY.

OP, shrooms go for $20 an eighth in Ohio, I've been to Columbus (10 miles away) and been able to find them for $15.

Find better hookups. Not trying to lead you away from growing, but I know for a fact $40 an eighth is not standard anywhere in Ohio.

Default Re: growin some shrooms!

alright, well as an experienced shroom grower, I can't write down everything I know, but here's some tips to get you started. First off, do NOT try to cake method. It has low yields, it isn't that much easier than doing a bulk grow, and overall is just a crappy method for people who have a brain. I suggest taking rye grain substrate, simmering it until only a few grains start to burst, and then pressure cooking them. Best way imo to pressure cook is to take a tyvek paper that you can get for free at a post office or even order for freeonline. Poke 2 holes in the mason jar lid ( a larger hole in the middle and a smaller inoculation hole to the side. Put the tyvek paper on the jar opening and then put the lid on that of that and then put some cotton into the lid holes. Screw on the ring. Cover with 2 layers of aluminum foil and put a rubber band around the foil to keep it in place. Pressure cook at 15psi for and hour and a half.

After the substrate jars cool, I would suggest making a glove box. All you have to do is get a large tupperware box with a lid and cut holes for your hands. Go to a publix or place where they have tube baggies that you put flowers bouquets in. Attach those to some rubber cleaning gloves to the flower plastic and figure out how to tape it together to make a glove box.

Take all your materials such as spore syringe, jars, paper towels, lighter, alcohol, and lyso and put it into the glove box and close the lid. First put alcohol on a paper towel and wipe your hands down first then the rest of the box. Then spray a bit of lysol into the air. Finally, take your spore syringe, flame the tip until it gets red and squirt out a little bit of excess. keep an alcohol swab on the needle after flaming. Remove the foil layers from your jars and inject 1-2 cc's of spore solution into the jar. Retract the needle still holding an alcohol swap to it and repeat for other jars. Shake up the jars not too roughly.

Put a layer of tinfoil back on top of the jars but not too tight, you will want a bit of air exchange. In a week, you should start to see white fuzzy stuff. Sometimes contamination can happen, but it is rare if you follow this technique to the dot. Put the jars in a warm dark place. When there are nice sized clumps of white, shake gently to spread them throughout the substrate. After the initial white stuff appears, it should only take about a week to fully colonize.

You can go many ways with the next step, but the method I find most cost efficient and produces good yields is take a large chunk of colonized substrate, and put that into some new fully prepared and sterilized substrate jars. You also need to do this under a glove box.

With the rest of your fully colonized jars, pick a proper fruiting container that suits your space needs. I use a lasagna tin baking pan with a high dome lid. Line the bottom with black plastic from a garbage bag or something and make sure you throughly wipe everything with alcohol.

This step does not reauire the glove box but try to do it in a small bathroom and lysol the shit out of the air. Open the colonized jars and with a sterilized spoon, spoon about a 2 inch layer of white stuff evenly. Cover that with an inch layer of casing mix. Casing mix I usually buy online. Shredded straw and coco coir are the best mix in a 50/50 ratio. Sometimes this has to be pressure cooked for a short time, but I've used both with success. Put in inch of that layer on top and smooth it all out. Spray with distilled water until the casing layer is moist and glistening, but dont over do it.

Cover the whole thing in saran wrap and then put the clear plastic dome on top loosely. Put in a warm dark place with some airflow or lift the dome once and day and fan it to give air exchange.

As soon as some of the white stringy mycelium appear in even areas popping through the casing layer, remove the saran wrap, keep the dome lid on, and place the whole thing in a light but shady spot with a lot of air flow. Keeping an optimal humidity and air exchange is the key to getting nice yields and huge shrooms. Spray the dome lid once a day but keep it loosely on. Also fan at least once a day but preferably 3 times. Trick is to not make the environment too wet, too dry, or not enough fresh air. Placing your fruiting chamber outside would be ideal but there are too many contaminants in the wind. Btw, keep the casing layer most but stop spraying once you start to see pins.

Once pinning occurs, only spray the lid once in a while and keep it well ventilated. If you notice white fuzz growing at the base of the stems, it's getting too much moisture and not enough air. At this point you're oh so very close to harvest....Pick the shrooms by twisting from the bottom just when the veil breaks and the shroom starts to open.

You'll be harvesting throughout the days because they will mature at different rates. When the first flush is over, I suggest adding like a half-inch of casing layer and saturating that with water enough so that it is glistening but not soaked. Cover it again with saran wrap and lid and put it in a warm dark place. When you see new mycelium breaking the casing layer, repeat the fruiting steps. I suggest only doing this twice. The next thing once you've had your second harvest is to make a 3 inch hole the shape of your container in the ground and kinda lay it like sod. Cover it with some extra bark, or even better those woodchip fertilizers and water it. Especially after a good rain, you'll get some MONSTER shrooms. This is primarily due to the fact that nature provides the most ideal temperature, air and humidity conditions. You can create a self-sustaining outdoor shroom garden this way as well.

Since I've gone this far aready, to properly store shrooms, they have to be bone dry and crispy.
Eat em fresh but the best experiences (10g wet = 1g dry), but an easy way to dry em without a food dehydrator is put it next to a heater on layers of paper towels. If you really want them to last, I'll share a little secret with you guys......You know those keyboard dusters? The air that comes out of them displaces oxygen, which can break down active chemicals. So take a baggie with your dried shrooms, press all the air out, fill it with keyboard duster air, and then press the air out again. I've kept shrooms this way just sittin in my closet for a year without losing potency. Throw in a little packet of dessicate as well.

Bulk grows using horse poo are sort of hit and miss imo. They are easier but you need more space basically and is messier

If anyone wants to know more, feel free to hit me up arandomname@gmail.com

If anyone knows where I can get a large cheap pressure cooker, let me know.

For spores, I recommend thelittleguy.com, used them a lot, great prices, selection, and delivery

You have good points but for an inexperienced first time grower is this really suitable? Although of course if he wants to grow in bulk then I guess your method would be the best to go for.

I'm hoping to step things up a bit and try something a little more advanced when I move back home this summer, I cant wait!

@kilari: That keyboard duster shit is bad for the environment (I know :o), just use dry ice, it'll push the O2 out all the same.
