Check out a book by John Allegro called The Sacred Mushroom and The Cross. He studied the language in the Old and New Testament and Gnostic scrolls. The book makes the argument that Jesus(in Semetic language) was in fact a play on words and that Jesus was a mushroom.

Christianity was actually a Jewish cult that was based around the use of the psychedelic mushroom Amanita Muscaria. The ancients worshiped the mushroom, fertility and the penis. However, the mushroom baffled the ancients because it grew without a seed. They noticed it appeared after rains storms so they assumed that rain was God ejaculating. He fertilized the earth causing tiny mushroom to rise out of the ground and become erect. Jesus was like the mushroom because he was fertilized by god. The sumerian root of the name Jesus means "god's semen" or "god's seed."

It's a truly delightful read, rather rare book. He makes so many connections between biblical stories and mushrooms.

I heard about the book while listing to a Terrence McKenna lecture and the ideas fit nicely with Terrence's thoughts on evolution and the mushroom.
