Depression Meds
I've been depressed for years now, at least, I'm pretty sure I have. I'm always tired, I have almost no motivation to do anything. I generally just feel unmotivated to do anything at all, almost like everything is just pointless. No, not emo. I'm not sad, and I don't feel sorry for myself because I have a great life. It could be because I have pretty intense social anxiety, maybe. I just feel...like giving up I guess, pretty much all the time.
I'm curious as to what would happen if I went to the doc and reported this. If I basically told him what I said in the above paragraph, would he give me depression meds? What type of stuff do doctors prescribe for depression? Is it the type that makes you like a zombie and just really low-key, or do they prescribe something that makes you feel happier?

Re: Depression Meds
Improve yourself. Your a sad depressed little puppy, because your exactly that. Go to the gym, start eating right, get a tan and try to get some pussy! You'll be just fine, theres nothing that medication can fix, it just postpones the problem and can create more.

Re: Depression Meds
Try remeron. It'll blow your anxiety out of the water. Don't mess with them SSRIs. If you are overweight it's not for you. Good luck.

Go to the gym
You would be surprised how some exercise and and good hot steam bath/sauna can relieve the blues. Sometime I too feel like shit (like right now; I was cranky/irritable/somewhat depressed all day today). I plan on making a trip to the YMCA tomorrow to work/sweat this feeling out.
Peace.

Re: Depression Meds
Well, they'll sure make you feel better, and they'll give em to you no doubt. If you wanted to be all clean about it you might want to look into some psychotherapy first tho

Re: Depression Meds
Talk to a shrink about trying out a low dose of an SSRI, great for social anxiety and gives you that little booster you obviously need. Not hard to get, just stay on for a couple weeks and taper as needed. Of course the problem with antidepressants and most psychiatric medications is whether or not they actually CURE the problem, so if you don't wanna be taking pills for a looong time you wanna check out where your troubles are coming from. Any history of bipolar mania in your family? If so then an SSRI would not be such a great idea, but if you talk to a doctor about it there's a whole lot of options.

Re: Depression Meds
Therapy has been proven to result in physiological changes in brain chemistry. Your brain chemistry can be affected by your thinking. Personally, I'd try to change myself before letting medication do it for me.
I would talk this over with a shrink before you do anything.

Re: Depression Meds
Do a search for other threds about depression/anti-depressants..there have been quite a few lately.
Try lexapro and cymbalta, they might work for you. Stay away from Paxil/Prozac

Re: Depression Meds
I was severely depressed for years. 2 years ago, I worked out for hours with heavy weight almost daily. True, it does make you feel better temporarily and almost gives you a little buzz. It's almost like a drug though, good in the short term, but doesn't really fix shit. I was diagnosed bipolar about 6 mos. ago and was given Lamictal. It feels unbelievably better not to feel like that, just normal like the old days.
I highly recommend you go see a psychiatrist. I think a combo of drug and behavioral therapy is the best bet for depression. People who've never been depressed don't really understand it and tell you things like workout and such. True drugs are bad in quite a few ways, but it's definitely better than feeling that debilitated.

Exactly how I feel. My dad's bipolar. In the past 4 or 5 months my life has gotten to be the best it ever has been, but the problem is I just feel shitty. So I dunno if that's his history passed down to me. Oh btw I have been seeing a shrink off and on since 5th grade. it was gay.

Re: Depression Meds
Try cognitive behavioral therapy if you're going to do anything, then meds. Meds should really only be a last resort, imo--I've been on a bunch of antidepressants (zoloft, effexor, cymbalta) but I went through cognitive behavioral therapy and it's basically based on teaching you to avoid negative thought patterns, which really works.
Edit: With whatever med i was on, I eventually (2 mo-2 years) got sick of the drug and decided nothing had really changed and quit it, regretting it once it wore off, then getting back on another one, etc. Go with therapy.
