I think my dad used to cook/use meth
I was watching Breaking Bad the other night, and in one scene the chem teacher picks up this big round bulbous flask (not sure what it's called) and insists they cook in that. My dad has some lab matierals in boxes in our garage for some reason, that as far as I remember, have never been used in my lifetime, but I remember seeing one of those big round flasks in there, maybe two. He was a college dropout, but when he went back, he majored in chemistry because as he told me, it was what interested him. He now has his master's and works a stable white collar job.
I also have these memories of driving to the salvation army building really early in the morning, maybe a few times a week, and waiting in line for my parents to get this red drink. I think it sounds a lot like a methadone clinic, from what I've read up on recently. I guess when I go home for spring break, I can examine the chemistry set more closely, as I haven't seen it in a few years and now have actually had a few chem classes. And if I get a chance, I could go back to that salvation army place and see if they have/had a methadone clinic.
What other reason would someone need lab equipment at home? Even if they are a college chemistry student...I don't see how that would help you study, really. I mean he had this shit before graduate school too, I believe.

Re: I think my dad used to cook/use meth
It's possible, I guess, but he could've used the flask (a round bottom/RB flask, btw) for a whole load of other chemistry.
The flasks are used generally for heating liquids. You use the RB flasks over regular Erlenmeyer flasks as the RB flask heats its contents more evenly, I believe.
He could've been distilling some alcohol or something.

o.O
...do you really want the full list? 'cause I'm pretty sure that &t has character limits, or something.
This, for instance, is a guide to at-home characterization of novel protiens in biological medium. This is an entire thread about the extraction and purification of a homogenized, high-purity cinnamon extract - great for finding out whether the cinnamon you got from the store sucks ass. The thread on the uses of ghetto TLC to confirm or deny the manufacturer's labeling in home food dies, sadly, went bye-bye, but would allow one to test the claims of the supplier.
Most of my current work involves structural nanoengineering across all levels from the atomic to the macroscale, with some pretty bitchin' materials to start with. Amusingly enough, it's spun out some unrelated technologies which, unlike prefab chromatography kits, I think I'm gonna shut up about until they're developed to a level suitable for a patent app.
So, really... while episodes of Cops try to scare people away into thinking "anyone who does science is eeeviill," there's an insane amount of shit one could do... plastics, nanotech, biotech, phase-transition technologies, DNA work, protien work, whatever.

ok, let me rephrase that. LIKELY reasons why someone would need lab equipment at home.
you may find testing cinnamon extract interesting, but i really can't see my dad, especially my dad of the 1980s where the family is poor as shit, he's working full time at the mill, and going to school full time, to take the time to fart around with spices.
i mean, he's got more freetime these days, and he doesn't do shit with chemistry. as i said, hasn't touched that lab shit in years, at least 14.
heh, when i was younger he used to tell me about how he wanted to set up a lab in the garage. there's even a vent/chimney thing in the roof for some reason (not put there by him mind you) and he'd say how that would be perfect.
and then there's the methadone clinic thing...

And? The deja vu of this thread? I recall you posting this at least...16 (I haven't searched externally, but an internal search seems to interpret as 16 months worth of whatever chemical clockiness = feels like 16 months...) months.
Do you remember or did you not get a decent answer last time?

Re: I think my dad used to cook/use meth
Is this going somewhere? He cooked meth, or didn't, either way, it seems pretty irrelevant to anything.

OMG, he has a RBF?
Must be a meth chemist.

Perhaps I shall be a little more blunt.
If there is anything a chemist hates, it's little fuckers like you, who think that one round-bottom flask is obvious incrimination of evil deeds. That shit was not cool in the middle ages, and we hate you slow-brained fucktards even more now. Just because you're, oh, a god damned fucking idiot whose mind cannot concieve of more than one thing, does not, in fact, mean that other people are a god-damned fucking idiot like you.
Ja? Ist das klar? Gut.
Now, I know you just want the answer you've preselected in your imaginary dream world, despite the fact that you've been told that you're dead wrong, but nonetheless, here are some facts :
- the number of uses for chemistry that are not meth outweigh the number of things that are meth by an infinite margin, dude.
- methamphetamine is not an opioid, dumbass.
- killing yourself would be the right thing to do.
Seven hundred years ago, I fucking hated having to pass off a simple acid/base extraction as motherfucking salad dressing because of stupid, inbred fucktards like you. I am not going back to that, even if I have to fucking kill you, dude.
You are the cancer which has been killing humanity - at least on the european peninsula, and you tried to branch out - for two thousand motherfucking years. 'n we've been killing mental defectives like you ever since, this whole fucking time. That use of the crusades to smuggle books into the peninsula, dude? The orchestration on the ancestral pledge with the de Dannan which opened up the libraries and flooded the mainland? Yeah. The destruction of the "Holy" Order of the Inquisition? Yeah, that was us. Oh, and that library you thought you burned? 'round Alexandria or thereabouts? Yeah... you thought you pulled that off. Librarum? al-Khem, bitch, perhaps you've heard of it. If you read the fucking forum description, it is the art of which we speak 'round these parts.
It has been a long and fucking bloody war, and I am not going back to hiding my flask from slack-jawed herd beasts such as yourself. Period. In the interim, I strongly suggest you press the "quit" button on the game of life, for the good of humanity.
Don't try to say I didn't give you more courtesy than you were due the first time I told you... but yeah, bitch, that's how it is. It's been a long and bloody war, and I ain't the fuck going back. Get with the post-twelfth-century world or get the fuck out of the human race.

^Pwned.
And also, EVEN IF you're dad really was cooking meth, this thread is still a pointless piece of shit.

Re: I think my dad used to cook/use meth
I still have that prefab TLC plate thing saved, and I have developed the kevlar test kit applicators as well, they work like a charm, too bad no one actually cares enough about what they ingest to actually buy one. I've not sold a single one yet, with or without the applicator.
