Recently, I got involved with a girl who had just moved here. Things progressed from us being friends to something a little more than that, but less than lovers.
Anyhow, after awhile she started sneaking out at night to come see me at my house. The problem is, we were a little too obvious about our relationship, and her foster parents found out.
Thing is, I'm 18 (turned last September) and she's 17 (and turning 18 this March). I always thought it was kind of funny that she's the younger one, as she graduated from highschool halfway through the year and is now going to a college nearbye (that I'll be attending next fall). She's also a ward of the state. Her foster parents already sent me some rather threatening phone calls and e-mails and forbid me to see her. Thing is, we work together.

So, what are the chances of me going to jail if her social worker finds out? And what's my chances of being able to have a normal relationship with her?

Honestly, if I'm going to be in a shitton of trouble for this, my plan is to just pickup and leave town. Until she got here, I really wasn't planning on sticking around my hometown or going to college. My original plan was to join the military or simply leave and start a new life for myself somewhere out of Kansas. A few months ago I met some guys that were transients and got hired by the local Co-Op during harvest, and decided to stick around. They plan on leaving once summer hits, and I'm starting to consider hitting the road with them. Hawaii sounds nice.

I'd wait till she either turns 18 or till the heat dies down.

in texas this wouldn't be a problem at all. we have a grace period of a few years that overlap with eachother. i think 17-19 together is still perfectly legal. 16 and 18 would be back though. and 17 and 20 would be bad too. i think it's something like that.

Eh, just join the Army after you graduate. But as for now, find out about your age of consent laws, and if you were in the wrong, apologize profusely to her parents and don't talk to the girl again until she turns 18.

Byss: That's actually not a bad idea at all... I've been considering the military for awhile. Anyhow, I've been told be several people that the age of consent her is sixteen, or there's some sort of grace period or something, such as what lakelaxrookie49 was talking about.
Things are looking up though. Her guardians finally calmed down about shit (but I doubt I'll be visiting anytime soon) and even told her she can see me if she wants too. Either way, we'll see what goes on.

What I found ironic in the whole situation is the fact that even though we're in a small town where everyone knows everyone, it wasn't someone from around here who snitched on her. It was one of her cousins from where she's from that she had told about me.

...as for dealing with the DHHS, in whatever fucked-up "what do we rename it THIS year"... while my last intelligence reports on the state-level system - which, admittedly, do not include reports from your state - suggests that there's no way in hell you can get into the system unless you have an older boyfriend who has the clout which you as a minor do not have, once you're there, the social workers have heard quite enough of the lives of people who have been made wards of the state that they really, really don't fucking care about consensual sex. At all. Sometimes they ask for a very, very, very fucking thin veneer of plausible deniability so their jobs are safe, and sometimes, "fucking a fourty year old man" is written up in the required evaluations as "has a wide array of positive relationships which should help her chances of thriving in a new environment."

Conversely, that "so their jobs are safe" may well be a question depending on exactly what pressure her foster parents can bring to bear. Banging political power bases against one another is one of those things that's always up in the air.
