Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
I have a legitimate migraine problem, sometimes I get them so bad I can't get out of bed in the morning. I went to a neurologist a few months ago and got it diagnosed and he gave me a prescription for Maxalt. It usually kills the migraine within a couple minutes, but sometimes (rarely) it doesn't help at all or the migraine comes back a couple hours later.
I am thinking about trying for an opiate script in a few months (after I move out, my parents think I'm addicted to vicodin). How often do opiates get prescribed for migraines? I know my grandma had a script for Kpins (shes old now, they were too strong) and my uncle still has one. Oxycodone would be great, but even hydrocodone would be nice.
I would probably go to a new neurologist and say that the Maxalt isn't working as well as it was (or should I say it never worked well?) and I want to try something else. My current neurologist really wants me on a preventative medicine, but I really don't want to be taking something everyday.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
You will NOT get Opiates/Opioids for migraines. It won't happen, period. They just don't write scripts to them for migraines. And if you constantly complain about them being that bad and stuff, they'll probably just end up making you get CT scans, etc. If you're going to try to con the doctors into giving you pain killers, there are far better ways. The best way to con them into giving you some Opiate/Opioid is the "hurt my back story". Trust me, that story works FLAWLESSLY. What you do (I'm not going to get into great details, I'm not even sure if this is allowed in the rules...) but you say you were helping a friend move something heavy. When you went to lift it, you got a sudden, sharp, shooting pain all the way down your back and into one of your legs. Normally you're in perfect health, never have any problems, never have pain (especially in this area), but after you "pulled it" when lifting it's but nothing but non-stop agony. And of course, you'll need to fake the pain pretty well. This means using your hands to push off things to lift yourself up instead of standing like normal, etc. If you go into an ER with that story, you will almost always get some pills. But don't try to give them shit like "I'm allergic to Tylenol/Advil/Ibuprofen etc" because that stuff is in whatever pain pills they will give you. Don't seem like you're just seeking drugs or they might give you less, none, or give you unnecessary tests. And NEVER go into an ER with the migraine problems seeking pills, because not only will they do all sorts of unnecisarry tests that will cost you tons, but you will just be taking up the time of the doctors and the people in the waiting room with legitimate problems. Hope this helps.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
I'm not going to make up something for a script, I was just wondering if I can get one for my migraines. If I can, I will try, if I can't, I will just forget about it. And I already got a CT scan done, and theres not tumors or anything.
What are ESs? Tylenol with codeine?
"[Opiates] are often used as a last resort and even then, they're used only for short-term relief, infrequent attacks or backup medication for severe attacks. Opiates are generally reserved for people who can't take other medications because of a medical condition or side effects."
I was just wondering if anyone has opiates for migraines or knows anyone who does.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
Dont listen to mahatmaganja420, he is BY FAR wrong. My girlfriend gets horrible migraines too. Her father used to get them to the point where he would go into seizures. But he broke his back in a bad ATV accident and has not had a migraine since. But back on track, my girlfriend got prescribed 5/500 hydrocodone/APAP for her migraines about a year ago. The doc gives her as many refills as she needs. She had to see a neurologist and got a MRI, but that was after she recieved the script. It turns out that she has a golfball-sized cyst on the surface of her brain. It may have nothing to do with the migraines, the neurologist said, but its likely that it is.

Thanks. I guess I'm going to try for atleast some percs, but hydrocodone would be nice to. I'm also going to get a recommendation for medical marijuana. Seriously, nothing helps as much as weed does, my migraine just melts away with the first hit, even if I don't smoke enough to get high.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
Opiates can be both a first and last resort for migraines. I mean, what else do we have? Cannabis? NSAIDS? Pfsht, yeah right....
Vicodin ES is basically the next step up on the Vicodin ladder - 7.5/750s

Do either of you know how many medicines they had to try to get the vicodin?
I just thought of another reason to drop the maxalt - 9 doses costs $200 without insurance, and I'm moving out soon. The price isn't really an issue right now though, my doctor has given me at least 40 "sample" doses so far. Every time I go in he hands me a package of samples as I'm leaving.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
You will NOT get Opiates/Opioids for migraines.
/thread, srsly.
A very knowledgable BLTC member who I haven't seen in awhile explained the whole reason why they won't give opiates for migraines on AIM once, but basically I think it's because opiates constrict blood vessels (Not sure if that's true or not, but probably pretty plausible).
In any case, my mom has had migraines for as long as I've been alive and she's never been prescribed an opiate PERIOD. Enjoy your Imitrex injectables and everything else with 0 rec value. Just take some Ibuprophen and work on gettin a street hookup or opiate worthy injury.
If you're not just after the opiates for rec, they don't help headaches and especially not migraines. That's from personal experience.
Good Luck.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
SN, I'm not condoning the manipulation of doctors to acquire a good script, I'm just saying that it is very possible to get opiates for migraines. Although my girlfriend said that her vicoden eases the pain, it makes the nausea associated with migraines worse. They also gave her a script for 600mg ibuprofen, she says it works MUCH better than the vicoden for her migraines.
Villrux, did you even read my first post?

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
Toward the end of last year I went to the emergency room with the worst migraine I've ever had. The doctor was worried because I was really dizzy, so he ordered a CT scan of my brain, thinking I had a stroke or something. It came back negative, so he gave my IV Tramadol and sent me on my way. I've had migraines for at least ten years now, about every other day. My neurologist gave me Maxalt and Flextra. Flextra is the only thing that works for me. Now I hardly ever get them, and when I do they aren't nearly as bad as they were.
I think it would be nearly impossible to get opiates for a migraine problem. One of the cases where opiates were prescribed above had extenuating circumstances (a cyst on the brain) that makes that a more serious case than regular migraines. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just very very unlikely.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
why don't you just talk to your damn neurologist about how your current medication is not keeping you from having migraines and ask if you could try something else...
i really doubt your getting an opiate script... snowballs chnace in hell really....
there are plenty of drugs that can be used to treat migraines, something other than opiates will probably work just as well or even better... but i think you would have more luck getting ergotamine tartrate for your migrains than oxy or hydrocodone...

Ibuprofin doesn't do shit.
They are real migraines, bad enough that I don't get out of bed some mornings.
Opiates DO help.
So does Maxalt and weed.

Nope. If the Maxalt continues to stop working I'll talk to my neurologist about it. He really wants me to be on the preventative medicine though, and I don't want to be taking something every day. I'm fucking 17, not 85. I don't need daily meds.

Damn good point, but keep in mind, you just may need daily meds if the problem is something serious, and that's what's required. I totally understand your disdain for having to take drugs everyday though.
I don't know the situation totally, or what your doctor has done so far, but there could be a large number of causes for the type of pain you are talking about. What are the condition of your teeth? Oft times a tooth injection will manifest itself in the jaw line, and spread from there, leaving the teeth which, though they look like shit, don't actually cause discomfort, only the jawline infection.
Also, severe sinus infection. Ear infection. Ocular trauma. Any kind of trauma to the head at all. Even dust mold and pollen in your environment can cause things like this.
Like I said, I don't know what your doctor has done so far, and these things are only off the top of my head, AND I'm no doctor. But I have pwned a great number of them.

God, I hope not. It will be a last resort though.

My teeth are in great condition, I wasn't the best about oral hygiene when I was younger, but I've never had a tooth or gum infection, and my dentist has commented on how healthy they are.
Also, severe sinus infection. Ear infection. Ocular trauma. Any kind of trauma to the head at all. Even dust mold and pollen in your environment can cause things like this.
Well, I got a CT scan a while ago because I had some head trauma while snowboarding a few years ago. The second day of snowboarding in my entire life (I live in Hawaii, no snow) and the mountain was really icey. Somehow I flipped over when I tried to stop and bounced on my head 2 or 3 times. I've had minor back problems ever since. Again, too fucking young for this.
Like I said, I don't know what your doctor has done so far, and these things are only off the top of my head, AND I'm no doctor. But I have pwned a great number of them.
Well, I've been to 2 neurologists. The first one just told me to take 600mg of ibuprofen. That was about 5 years ago. This current one gave me a prescription for Maxalt the first appointment. The second appointment was 3 months later, and since the Maxalt had only failed once he just gave me more samples and told me to make an appointment if they get worse.
He also said that a "lifestyle change" is very important. Since I started working out 5 days a week I've had a lot less headaches.
Edit: I'm pretty sure my migraines are mostly genetic though; both parents, at least 3 grandparents, and a bunch of uncles all get migraines. My cousin even attempted suicide because of one even, she took a bunch of pills and ended up in the hospital.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
Dont listen to mahatfaggot. My buddy gets perc 10's for breakthrough with migraines. He gets them pretty bad,and I would say its not that hard to fake this. You have to watch what really happens to somebody though while theyre having one.I could fake this.If someone even has a headache just imagine amplifying it by about 20 and you could probably pull it off.I know a girl that lied to get vics for migraines. Its pretty easy to get opes if you know what youre doing and what to say.I know you have a legit problem, but I'm just explaining usually how easy it is to get some painkillers when you want or need them.

I like opiates, and I was curious. :) Also, weed isn't quite as socially accepted. It's okay if I pop a couple pills, but it's not okay to take out a pipe and take a couple hits, even if they accomplish the same thing.

Re: Opiate Prescription for Migraines?
Didn't read most of these long ass posts...and I spit on my monitor when I saw mahatma's huge ass text turd. Some docs may give you weak opiates for the migraines but there are a few Rx that are made specifically for this reason. Google: Relpax. My sis was given these for her migraines and my mom probably still carries around imitrex. I found a list of alot of the meds you'd be inclined to recieve Here (http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/find-drug.html)
