bullshit shroom checking technique
so my friends brother in law told him that he knows how to identify magic mushrooms, his technique is to put the shroom on any white paper and if a blue ring appears where the mushroom was then it is good to eat and will make you trip. he wants to go on a shroom hunt with my friend and is there any way to convince him this is bs and will probably kill him?

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
actually that does work... but you have to scratch the mushroom, if it broozes blue then its a magic mushroom for sure.

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
It is rumored that the blue bruising is a way to tell, but I've also heard that some poisonous ones will bruise blue. Also, this method doesn't help much unless the mushrooms are so fresh they will bruise...

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
It sounds like he is talking about taking a spore print. You put the fresh cap on a piece of white paper and a ring of spores is left after a while. Cubensis spores are a dark sort of blue. But unless you look at the spores under a microscope, the fact that they are dark blue doesn't mean they are safe. Magic mushrooms also bruise blue due to the oxidation of the active ingredients. This is also not a indicator of safety as there are poisonous mushrooms that do the same thing

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
I'd say he's probably refering to some sort of 'bruise checking technique', but a lot of mushrooms bruise blue - a HELLUVALOT of mushrooms, man - so just keep that in mind.

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
if it bruises blue it does have psilocybin in it, but chances are it will kill you also.

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
Give him this website, and tell him never to rely on something so generalized when it could be a life/death matter..
www.mycokey.com
I don't guarantee a positive ID from that site either, it has a lot of things you have to enter, and sometimes you have to change your answers a bit to find something similar. Don't fill out anything you aren't positive about.

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
ahhh, the ignorance. The kid is thinking of a spore print, but he has the whole process wrong. Besides, you would be looking for purpleish spores in a print. Many mushrooms bruise blue, not just psilocybin containing mushrooms. The theory that the oxidization of psilocybin causes the bruising is false, just to clear that up. Bruising is never a good way to identify mushrooms anyways, there are even some cubensis strains that bruise green, and they are fine to eat. Your friend has no idea how to identify mushrooms. Please try to dissuade him from doing this and give him a link to the shroomery.

so, he is taking a spore print....that is what you are supposed to do and its not blue....thats the bruising
its not as simple as just the color other factors have play in this.
I would not pick mushrooms that i was not almost 100% sure were the right ones.
just invest in some spores...then you know what you get.

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
leave mushroom hunting to people who actually know what they're doing.
i buy shrooms. money is nothing, especially compared to possibly dying from eating something i found somewhere

Re: bullshit shroom checking technique
Both spore prints and bruising are useful tools, but neither one is a certain identification by itself, no...
