Reading the Manga I thought Mello was a chick...I had to re-read a few pages to make sure it was 'he' and 'him' I was reading.

-NSActually, I would say the series started going downhill considerably before that. Around ep 15 - Gamble, a whole 10 eps before L died. Although arguably the premise had been starting to wear out its welcome even before then.

The series suffers a lot from bringing up some philosophical stuff for the subject matter and then trying to merely entertain instead of doing anything with it. And for the second opening/ending.
