Default Whats a good anti-depressant precription that wont kill my brain?

Or that wont have any long term effects. I know too many people who get prescribed and then end up a veggie. I want to be able to still have all my focus, energy, etc. while just helping things on a chemical level, not to make me "feel good".

Thanks.

paxil

you are a fucking moron. DO NOT TAKE PAXIL. it might not give you brain damage but it's hard to get off due to PHYSICAL withdrawals. Get a light dose of effexor. 75 milligrams and get the XR kind (extended release). SSRI's generally won't mess up your head but they can and paxil is a bad choice compared to effexor. i say this because every person i know that has been on effexor including myself has had no bad side effects, whereas with paxil everyone i've know including myself again had bad mental side effects. like obsessive unwanted thoughts. plus effexor doesn't only work with serotonin like the majory of them do.

Another vote against Paxil. It'll fuck your shit up - I've witnessed it first hand w/ a family member. Effexor is better choice.

But...

Marijuana, ftw.

Are you actually depressed? Have you seen a psychologist?

and you don't know yet, everyone's body will react differently to different drugs. And the beginning of anti-depressent medication is hell, or so I've heard.

Yea, I looked up paxil and it looks like exactly what I don't want. Marijuana is near the top of the list of things I don't need, right next to a beehive covered in mace stuffed up my rectum.

Any other thoughts than effexor?

Ive tried a variety of things to help me with anxiety, social anxiety, paranoia, obessive thoughts, depression, OCD activity, muscle spasms, etc. Obviously the issues are too complicated to isolate and explain to anyone. They are all interrelated with your life, relationships, spirituality, how to view the world, your neurochemistry, etc, etc. All I can say is that you have to explore yourself and find out what works for you. I tried medications, meditation, learning about spirituality, rationalizing my thoughts and anxieties, nutrition, and that goes on and on as well. My advice is to calm down, focus, and try to draw a mental map of what your thoughts are and why they might be that way. To do that is a feat in itself but you also have to gain more knowledge about the world around you. It's a process and it's all about your perception of it. Just try to feel centered in the present moment and turn off ur habitual racing thoughts and just feel your body and be calm. From there, you'll get ideas about what you want and how to get there. Above all, don't stress out and lose hope and instead try to enjoy the process of understanding life and your mind and don't think you already know what you want and what life is supposed to be.

So in your opinion, medication hasn't helped alot? I've tried all the things you mention, and I also agree with your ideas. But as someone experienced in the course of medication, you would advise me not to?

I am pretty unsure about it myself, I've always hated the idea of anti-depressants, and when I go to the websites of these drugs the pictures of people smiling like idiots and the entire ad just makes me feel sick. Just wanted to do something radical. But I don't know if its what I need, because I'm not experienced with how the drug affects you.

DO NOT TAKE EFFEXOR.

It was like a constant amphetamine come down for three and a half months, and then I was severely nauseated and off balance and dysphoric from withdrawals for two weeks after I stopped.

it doesn't matter which antidepressant YOU'd like to try. to get a script for it you have to see a psychiatrist and HE will decide what meds to put you on. it's not as easy as saying, i want x drug plz.

trazadone

Trazadone is fucking ridiculous. My roommates mother got prescribed this shit about a month ago..after two weeks she was borderline psychotic, not knowing who she was or why she was who she was. She couldn't recognize paintbrushes when they were put in her hands. I would avoid this at all costs..but I'm 99.9 percent sure your doc wouldn't give you this anyways.

As for a good Anti-D...as stated above, stay away from paxil. Usually people are started on Lexapro nowadays but it will either work extremely well or do nothing for you. It's all about finding the meds that work for you. The most important thing is to take it slow and not hop to another scrip. days after quitting one. This (or just not taking them) is usually what ends up "killing your brain". When I first started taking Anti-Ds I fucked up and mixed Lexapro and Cymbalta and then up and quit all of them. I went psychotic and tried to kill myself.

I am so sick of people asking questions here that should be addressed to a real doctor!

you are a goddamn worthless fucking faggot who doesnt deserve to be happy. if you're the kind of retard who asks about legitimate medical questions on line then the only thing that will help you is a bullet through the brain!

KILL YOURSELF!!

EDIT: ok maybe that was a little bit harsh, but seriously, can we start locking threads that have nothing to do with recreational drug use? legitimate questions like this need to be asked to a real doctor not an online drug forum.

I've taken zoloft, paxil, ritalin, 5-htp, a GABA supplement, valium, xanax, and the amino acid loading cocktail described by joepedo, as well as psychedelics (I've tried a lot of them but not many times each. I just thought that I'd include them because I feel like they have changed my life a lot). I guess I've been lucky in that SSRI's haven't given me any real noticeable side effects. I went through a lot of problems with dealing with stress, social relations, and spirituality before highschool and all throughout it. I had some pretty bad OCD and I still kinda do have it but it's improved a lot.

I first went to a psychiatrist when I was 18 because I was just generally really confused starting college about life and how to fit in and stuff. My OCD was REALLY bothering me and I also had bad anxiety in almost every situation and even realized that I was really paranoid about people judging me all the time. At the time I had the view that most people on this forum share about mood altering drugs being bad for you and not being effective...in addition to all the cynicism I had about the pharmaceutical industry blah blah blah. Anyway, psych put me on zoloft, which made me feel kinda jittery and I had this odd tension at times in my jaw. Side effects both physical and mental didn't really seem that bad. I think I've always been really strong mentally especially in rationalizing my situation and not going crazy or anything. I don't know about other people when it comes to how SSRI's affect their mental state and make em psychotic.

Zoloft didn't seem to be doing much so I switched to Paxil. At this point there were a number of things going on in my life such as starting to get into psychedelics and drugs in general. I never took drugs before college so this was a very new thing to me. I am a rational and careful person and I saw through lots of the bullshit society tries to condition you about drugs. But for me psychedelics seemed to hold a certain promise of spiritual and personal growth. I read A LOT about using psychedelics for humanistic psychotherapy that agreed with my philosophical views and such. Tihkal really got me thinking and curious. I also began to start defining my individuality at this point and basically realized that society and other people around me didn't hold the answers to what life is and how I should fit in it. I had to experience for myself that the "popular" college kids were just a bunch of dumbasses getting drunk and that it was stupid to try to be like them because in actuality I was for more interesting and fun to be around and more importantly, at peace when I learned to be myself.

Back to topic haha...the paxil seemed to work on my OCD a bit and improved my mood, but that could just as well have been the changing views I had. Benzos really did nothing for me and I was really disappointed because of that. People report euphoria and being really sociable and stuff, but it didn't have those good effects. I think that somewhere in my mind I just knew that my problems weren't simply chemical imbalances and that there was no wonderdrug shortcut.

I stress that you can't simply rationalize things in your head in order to change feelings of anxiety that arise from your unconscious. You have to experience and feel them and put things into perspective. You can't reject the feelings of trying to be like other people into a void. There has to be an alternative path to add meaning to life and for me I had to gain confidence in my own thoughts and ideas about things and realize that mainstream culture really doesn't hold real answers or the way to view life. I could get into all of that and go on for hours but feel free to ask if you want to know more on that.

Psychedelics and substances like MDMA showed me a lot of things. It wasn't just the ideas that I got while I was tripping though, I think it simply opened new possibilities of experience and showed me that there is much more to life and experience than the feelings you hold onto and are attached to. The habitual thoughts and anxieties I had were out of fear and attachment. Psychedelics can just be confusing a lot of the time and most people do not know how to put psychedelic experiences into context with their lives. They would think things like "OMG the mushroom showed me that we all actually live on a giant turtle floating in space!" but you have to be intelligent enough to separate worthwhile ideas.

I took some MDMA and acid one time alone in a forest and had an incredible introspective experience and felt real love and empathy for myself. It didn't really have a lasting change to my mood or anything, but it's experiences like that that can break down barriers long enough to see more to the root of your mind and feelings.

Nowadays I'd say that I'm very very much improved from where I was at just a year ago. I have added real meaning to my life and found things that I am truly interested in. I also have had a lot of intellectual and spiritual growth that I think has been the most important thing to making me feel good and reducing OCD and anxiety. Spirituality is a very hard thing for people to relate to each other so it might sound cliche or something but my new views of life and the universe put life into a hopeful and elegant perspective that makes sense to me. I can see other people and events for what they really are and I do not hold anger, resentment, or ignorance to things, but rather acceptance and empathy. The reason I've taken the 15 minutes to write this is because if I were here a year ago feeling really down and hopeless and confused, I would want to know that someone like me actually found hope that isn't superficial and doesn't ignore my own thoughts and experiences.

I'm currently trying out joepedo's amino loading cocktail and I've noticed improved moods overall and I'm also taking ritalin because I noticed that it helps me control my automatic racing thoughts that take me out of the "current moment" and prevent me from feeling clear and grounded and in control.

Geez that was long...not nearly as long as it could've been mind you, I left a lot out. But I hope I answered your question. :D

I really don't see whats wrong with his fucking question. He didn't ask for any medical advise, diagnoses, or w/e. He just wanted to know of any body's success with an anti-depressant and what it was. It deals with psychotropic drugs so fuck it.

Also, I'm not 12, I'm 21. And if OP or anyone for that matter is 12 I give them props for being on here and starting to educate themselves. In a week they'll know more than 99.9% of all our drug using buddies and we all know this is damn true.

i can be on a bunch of opiates and high and tripping mushrooms with my favorite group of friends and still have feelings of depression sometimes, but at soon as i meet a new girl that i feel like might have some potential, especially if things go well in the near future, any depression whatsoever is just blown away. i'm more productive, more friendly, more optimistic... everything. and it legitimately lasts as long as the good situation does.

there is no good antidepressant prescription. that is an oxymoron and you need to wise the fuck up to it. prescription medicines are strenuously formulated to not be recreational in the least because society has an ignorant and morbid view against it. The problem with this is that you need this stimulation, pleasure, and recreation to reverse the stages of depression. Depression is rarely caused by a natural decline in serotonin, it is a mental state of being unhappy or displeased with your life that causes this decrease in serotonin that in turn makes you feel shitty. the only way to treat unhappiness is with the opposite and thats why the best drug you can take are the illicit ones.
