Default Is there any reason to brag?

So I'm friends with a chef I work with. We're not like best buddies, but we chat alot in work.
It's been established that I'm taken, and he's deffinately not attracted to me, so it's not as though he's trying to impress me here.
But lately, he's been bragging alot. He's allways been quite an egoistical person, generally he'll be the one talking about him and his experiences and I'll be listening and inputting in response, so I can understand that I'm an ego booster to him.
But still, this amount of bragging is confusing me. We're obviously friends, and I'm not the sort of person who'd not be friends with someone if he wasnt 'cool'.
More and more, he's talking about mad, almost unbeleivable things he got up to on his weekend. He'll brag about how fast he drives his mates car (it's a shitbox fiesta with a fucking spoiler ducttaped to the back, so again I know he's not trying to impress me), he tells me about the huge amount of beer he drank and then the huge amount of coke he took and all the numbers he got from fit girls.

I mentioned thermite in passing the other day (No I dont know anything about it or how to make it) and immediately he said how once he and his mates had poured some onto some assholes car.

And so on, and so on.

Is bragging to this extent just part of being male?
I mean, to you guys out there, do you brag to your friends about things like this?
Or is this not actually bragging and I've just misinterpreted him? Alot of what he says...well it sounds like BS, but I'm not one to judge.

He could just be making conversation. Talking to kill time and fill up the day; it's something a lot of people do.

From your description, it sounds like he's telling stories about fun things that have happened and talking about what's going on in his life. It doesn't sound strange.

Maybe you're over-thinking things. Talk about some of the things that have happened in your life. Sharing is a two way street.

A LOT of males do this.. they try to let everyone know that they are as cool or alpha male w/e as possible. They don't realize that they are over doing it and look like pieces of shit, though.

DONT WORRY ABOUT IT.
Default Re: Is there any reason to brag?

First reason= Your a female, and your around him to converse with him.

Second reason= Yes because hes a male.

Ill sometimes catch myself ragging on but often if i tell of an experience to a female then ill let her input on mine or allow her to comment in immediately with her own similar story. I wont follow up anymore unless she asks/shows interest. An exchanging process if you will. Therefore im not crossing the line and basically talking amongst/about myself 100% of the time.

Maybe he figures if he finds enough shit to brag about, you won't have time to go into lengthy conversations about your gerbils. He probably stays up at night trying to think up new stories to keep you quiet.

I'm not the sort of person who'd not be friends with someone if he wasnt 'cool'.

Oh, and kudos.

This is fucking bullshit, a guy does interesting shit and if he then talks about it he's "bragging"? Just because your idea of excitement is frantically hitting f5 after you flame someone, doesn't mean you can try to bring him down by saying he's bragging when all he's doing is talking about fun shit he's done.

Here's an idea, go out and do something interesting and then tell him that story. He's probably on some other board somewhere on the internet saying "This fucking boring ass chick I work with won't stop talking to be but I'm running out of stories and she won't tell me any of hers!"

Default Re: Is there any reason to brag?

Some people can't help but brag about themselves. It's just who they are.
Like, they tell you that they went partying and fucking everything with a skirt the previous weekend to seem cool and one of the gang so people will like them when, in fact, they played Dungeons and Dragons all weekend with some other elves and goblins and shit while taking the occasional break to go fap in the bog to pictures of 7 of 9.

Not like me...I totally went to the Iraq last weekend and handed out maps of South Africa to the kids who don't have schools and shit. True story.

I rule Cool

He's probably just a goddamn liar, and just saying shit to make himself feel better. it doesn't matter if it was you or anyone else he tells, just as long as someone hears a story that he thinks makes him look cooler to boost his ego or puts him in a positive light.

sometimes people tell other people's stories and use them as their own. that could be one thing that's happening here. guys do talk like that, but he seems to be over-doing it, especially because you're a girl.

i had a friend that did that, its really annoying, it got to the point he was telling my stories to me saying he did them. then argue with me calling me a liar, needless to say we don't talk anymore. if anyone has that lame a life and needs to try to lie about dumb stories to make other people think otherwise then they can fuck off.

It's a little bit of a guy thing. It's mostly an asshole thing though. Hell, could even be a lame attempt to relate.

Actually, it's probably true. Yes, we're as crazy as you think. Yes, our stories are probably true.

Guys have a good time from just messing about like that. Good stuff.

Yea some guys like are just complete fucktards/compulsive liers who probably feel like they have nothing to loose by bullshitting to you constantly.

I've never seen the same thing in girls, but equally annoying are girls who talk bullocks like they are on speed, normally about something you couldn't care less about.

Well, some of that sounds like bragging but others, to me, sounds like you just misinterprited it. I think it may just be his word choices.
