Predisposed to using opiates
Has anyone heard of being predisposed to opiate use? Not necessarily that you will become a full blown addict, but at the right dose you'll notice a legit improvement in how you function as a person. Basically, taking something like methadone not because you are a recovering junkie, but because you benefit from it in the same way a person with anxiety problems benefits from a benzo prescription.
Specific improvement would be things like smoother flow of thoughts and more control over thoughts(a sort of relief for ADD), reduced self conscious feelings and increased confidence(however not overbearingly confident), increased motivation and ambition(amotivational syndrome seemingly going away), mood swings no longer as dramatic. Theres more but I think you can get the idea from that. It seems as though if a person has a platter of mild mental problems like the ones I just mentioned, an appropriate dose of opiates may help significantly with a blanket effect on all of them.
To give you an idea of the dose range:
Methadone - Typically 20-30mg has the most ideal effect with little to no opiate tolerance. Produces a slight high but very apparent change in what I mentioned earlier(i.e. motivation, cognitive function, confidence). With a tolerance at times dose reaches 50-60mg but easily can be reduced again.
Dilaudid - Extremely similar results as the methadone. I don't remember exactly, but swallowed the dose was around 6-8mg. Frequently a combination of snorting half the dose and swallowing the other half for more immediate effects, without getting fucked up.
So far those are the only two drugs where such effects have been observed, however not many other opiates have been tried. The trend seems to be (once again with little to no tolerance) a light to mild dose of a stronger opiate, generally swallowed since the 'rush' is not what is being looked for. Something like percocet doesn't produce the same relief, no matter the dose.
Does any of this seem rational? I tried to find information on opiates as psychological medication but didn't come up with much.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
Back in the day they used to use opiates to help treat depression.
you can get into the same sedated state of mind without ANY drug.
not really a good idea to use something thats giving you more of a body high than the mindset you like from it, because theyre addicting as shit, obv.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
Yeah I understand what your saying, I usually use them for the same thing. Not trying to get into the nodding stage but just that slight buzz where the day goes by smoother and your more comfortable. aka "a functioning addict" :P

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
Don't listen to these sarcastic idiots. Yes it's possible to be predisposed, genetically for instance if you come from a family of addicts you have a 50% chance of being addicted yourself. Also, more interesting to me there has been a correlation between trauma and taking opiates. Low self-esteem, ptsd etc will lead certain people to opiates just as certain people will be lead to alcohol.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
My grandpa(RIP) was a dopefiend, my mom was a dopefiend, I WAS a dopefiend. But if my daughter ever touches the shit, I'll kick her ass across the Delaware river. Good thing drug addiction does not run on her mother's side.
It's hereditary just like alcoholism.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
Yes some ppl IMO can be predisposed. It could be endorphin deficiency syndrome, do a little research on it.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
your saying that you feel better as a person when you take drugs? I can really see why you would say that, but I think thats the ulimate reason people take drugs. wouldnt you say? So I woulnt say that people are predisposed to use drugs. maybe those with AD(H)D doing speeders but thats really it. I dont want to make you feel stupid but reread what you wrote and tell me all the reasons you just stated arent why people use drugs. you cant can you?

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
modega, the idea of endorphin deficiency seems to make perfect sense. Thank you for bringing that up.
throopguy21, you're an idiot, you need to reread my original post. I'm specifically talking about opiates and only a certain range of them even. You are putting words into my mouth by saying I 'feel better when I take drugs' when I am CLEARLY not saying that.
Also, I really don't think most people use drugs because they feel as if they're a better person when they do. Acid for example, if the average person who trips on acid felt as though they're a 'better person' when they're tripping, they would want to be tripping constantly, because in theory you would be a 'better person' constantly. Now consider rational thought, it would seem that that would not be a good way to live whatsoever unless you have next to no obligation to function in a society. However, the occasional experience of an acid trip is a good thing, not because you are a 'better person' on acid, but because you are a 'better person' after you're on acid.
You speak with entirely too general of ideas, different people take different drugs for different reasons.
P.S. - I think most of the people on here take drugs for the primary reason of recreation. Definatly to 'better' themselves, also, but not to as much of an extent as for pleasure.

Re: Predisposed to using opiates
I don't think the "functional addict" type is inherently bad. True, there is the whole stigma of not having to rely on drugs to feel good, but as long as it isn't ABOUT the drugs and more about what you can do/feel/experience and improve your life using drugs as a tool, then there is no difference between drugs and using any other type of technology. People are addicted to shoes, food, hammers, any technology. It's just that using drugs can develop tolerance and possible long-term changes to body chemistry. But what it comes down to is ability to live a better life and so this whole "don't fuck around with your natural state" doesn't really make sense since you live in an ever-shifting society that has unnatural demands and abstractions that your natural state isn't adapted for. As long as society the way it is, people are forced to use whatever is at their disposal to improve their lives within it.
