I'm not saying I approve of the way the couple went about it (the least safe way possible), but a bit of electricity to the alligator clamps isn't that strange. ....is it?

Weren't they using straight house current? The stuff that kills people every year? Not as strong as the stuff up on the poles, but still?

Look at the kind of things you can do with 120v AC? Look at all the heat & light coming off one 100w incandescent bulb? Let alone the whole 120v x 15amps = 1800watts in a circuit? You think having the energy of 100w bulb going through your nips would be fun?
