P450 inhibitors
so the drugs i take are metabolized by cytochrome P450. the only other drug i use is tobacco, which is a P450 inducer, thus speeding up the metabolism of drugs in my system. does anyone know how much is affects it? and what would be the strongest readily accessible P450 inhibitor? anyone have personal experience here?

Re: P450 inhibitors
The p450 spectrum is a broad family of individual enzymes, and not a single molecule.

Re: P450 inhibitors
i'm trying to prevent an increase in the oxidative metabolism of the drugs i take, and i see that it's metabolized by p450 enzymes. i also see from this
http://medicine.iupui.edu/flockhart/table.htm
that tobacco in a p450 inducer. i smoke, and i'm looking to negate the effect of the tobacco by added some inhibitor(s) to my intake,, or to quantify this effect on the phase 1 metabolism to dose accordingly.
^^and i neither said nor implied that it was a single molecule, i'm a bit confused by that reply

Well, hopefully you'll get it swiftly. In the interim, we'll try a simple thought exercise - there is no such thing as a "p450" inducer or inhibitor. This established... do you want instead a CYP1A2 inhibitor? CYP3A4? CYP2D6? WHAT?!?!?!
Seriously. Until you start specifying, your question doesn't even make sense.

okay, i'm getting it now. i'm going off to do a little more research and then i may answer my own question. i'm very unfamiliar with enzymes and metabolism in general, so forgive my ignorance here.
i didn't realize P450 referred to an entire enzyme system, and it was broken down into isozymes
and now i realize i'm looking for a CYP3A4 inhibitor

Re: P450 inhibitors
and i didn't know CYP3A4 was involved specifically in metabolizing such an array of drugs.
so now i'm looking for a readily available CYP3A4 inhibitor, out of curiosity. throughout this i've also realized that tobacco is a CYP1A2 inducer, which should not cause problems with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, right? that invalidates my initial question completely, so joepedo, i see where you're coming from.
isn't it wonderful what a little self motivated learning can accomplish?
*the more you know....* ;p
and it does look like bergamottin, a constituent of grapefruit juice, is a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor.
so i've totally answered all my own questions.
at the very least let this be a lesson to newer members who are inclined to learn on their own instead of letting totse give them answers. this took about fifteen minutes total searching, reading, and understanding, spread out in two or three minute increments throughout the day.
