| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Your connections are being encrypted (which takes time), then routed through several servers (which takes time), decrypted (which takes time), and finally sent to their destination (which takes time). The responses are then encrypted, routed through several servers, and finally decrypted on your machine.
You don't use systems like JAP or Tor for anything where you require a great deal of speed. You use them for anonymity.
BTW, it's not Firefox that's being slow -- it's the proxy.

There's a continuum...
Convenience==========================Security.
The farther you go towards one side, the farther away you get from the other. Deal with it.

Re: Why is firefox so dam slow?
In a typical environment, it's like this:
Browser -> ISP -> Site
When you run a proxy, it's a far longer diagram, akin to this in many cases:
Browser -> Some level of Encrpytion -> ISP -> Proxy 1 -> Proxy 2 -> Proxy 3 -> Proxy 4 -> Site
Each stop on the diagram eats up time, and that's why it's so slow. Try going to proxy.org or something similar, and then start linking proxies up so you have about 20 of them you are going through. You will notice that with each new proxy, there is a larger delay in the load times per proxy you load.
As was stated, the more proxies you run through, the more secure your connection - though, really, it just means more work for others to find where you are really coming from. Nothing is 100% secure - the slower it will be because of the other actions that need to be taken on the data. If you transmit raw data, it doesn't go through any intermediary applications or servers, so the data goes right to you.
If you just want a speed raise on normal firefox, there is the usual hacks for that. http://howto.helpero.com/howto/Speed-Up-Firefox_31.html

I was thinking it was something like this,give up speed for security. I only use the proxy for certian things not just general browsing ,so thanks for the replies.

That's like telling someone to never use a condom because "nobody ever gets pregnant anyway."

Re: Why is firefox so dam slow?
Can anyone recommend a decent proxy application that isn't too slow on a 3 Mbit connection. Also is i t possible to switch between Tor / Privoxy and a proxy that offers less protection for normal web browsing.
