Cigarettes.
Alright. Today, I tried to quit smoking. After about 3 hours, I began feeling very depressed. Thoughts that I didn't like were easing themselves into my mind.
I felt generally very annoyed and would constantly get up myself for little, stupid things that I did wrong.
Is this the effect of nicotine? When I first started (4 years ago) I would smoke a cigarette and be all like 'PSH, THIS ISN'T ADDICTIVE, WTF'.
BUT NOW, I need my morning cigarette, or I'm just a foul person to be around.
I don't know if its worth quitting. Besides, if you've seen that Spanish movie (I think its Spanish) Basically, a smoker is more likely to die from other causes such as getting murdered, hit by a car, etc than smoking alone.
Anyway, tell me. How did you first get addicted, why you started? And how are you without your cigarette?

Re: Cigarettes.
See, that's the thing, I don't go without cigarettes, because I WILL FIND A FUCKING CIGARETTE. Even if it means bumming from random people on the street or in front of stores. I don't give a FUCK.
I've kicked damn near every major drug with no problem at all, but cigarettes are my vice. I just can't go without. You guys think I'm an asshole now, you should see me with no cigarettes.
I don't even like to think about it.
*lights up cigarette*
There we go, calm. You had me freaking out there for a second.
Anyway, I tried my first one at 3, I saw it in the ashtray, thought it looked tasty, so I ate it.
The first one I smoked was at 8, my friend introduced me to them. Then I didn't do it again till 15, but by then I was using chewing tobacco (texas) and again, a friend gave it to me. Shortly after that, I was stealing my dads, then shortly after that, my mom said fuck it and just started giving me cartons.
It's been a solid 10 years so far, smoking at least a pack a day, sometimes up to three. I once smoked two packs in a matter of 5 hours. That was because of the drugs though, booze, coke, and benzos.

Re: Cigarettes.
When americans refer to a pack of cigs, does that mean 10 or 20 in a pack?
Cos a pack of cigs to me is 10, but iirc they don't sell 10 packs in America?

They don't sell packs of 10 anywhere in the US.
As SN said, have a healthy smoking habit for 1+ year, and quitting and going a day without of cigs will make you homicidal and suicidal.

Of course it's worth giving up. What kind of an argument for not giving up is 'its not more likely to kill me than everything else combined'?

I smoke a pack a day. I can't go without one or as previously mentioned you get all homicidal / suicidal. I get annoyed at the drop of a dime and basically just want to flip a bitch.
It's always a good idea to quit unless you can be confident that you won't die from it.

Re: Cigarettes.
I just quit yesterday, been about 25hrs. since I last smoked one.
I've smoked off and on since 13, so 8 years. Never more than a pack a day, usually somewhere between 7-10.
Not really fiending to bad. I'm in a big time afterglow so thats probably helping. Really had no desire last night while I was tripping. I know later on today and tomorrow is definitely going to be the test. Just gotta man up. As long as you keep your mind off it it's not to bad.

I make it to three days everytime. I can control my temper, and the cravings, then I get depressed.
Bam, cigarette time. I can handle being pissed, and wanting one, I can't handle irrational depression. I do a bit better on every attempt though, and it always manages to take me from at least twenty to around ten cigarettes a day for a few weeks.
I've gotta kick it though, I decided a few weeks ago that I'd rather like to live to be old and healthy, as opposed to old and dead.

Re: Cigarettes.
Tried one at 14 or so and didn't like it. Then I smoked one while I was high and loved the feeling, decided I would only smoke cigs after pot.
Now I go through a pack every few days, sometimes I only have like one cig at the end of the day. I've only been smoking for two years and don't really think I'm addicted, but I definitely get a bit irritable after a day or so without.

I've been smoking for 2 years-ish. Up until my sister turned 18 I used to just smoke one at night, but now it's one in the morn and one after dark. I'm not sure if it's the addiction part or the whole ritual aspect that keeps me smoking.

I've been smoking Marlboro Reds (sometimes 100's) for about 1 and a half years, gettin close to 2 yrs. When I drove (high school) I would sometimes smoke a pack a day, then again i prolly shared a lot of those with friends.... these days i dont smoke more than half a pack a day, and if I have bud i smoke like less than 5 a day. Although, once I finish off this last pack of my carton of reds i got for christmas (best present ever), I plan on smokin somethin a little lighter for a bit... most likely Camel Lights. those are about perfect to me when I'm stoned =)

In my opinion cigarettes are only good for potentiating other drugs (opiates, benzos, cocaine, etc). But sadly i too am kind of addicted to them! I smoke about 5-7 cigs a day (turkish royals or camel signatures) and have been a smoker for about 3 years!

I smoke like a chimney when I'm drunk or otherwise loaded on coke/opiates. Otherwise, I can't stand cigarettes. I always enjoy the smell though.
Yesterday I was drunk and on Valium, and I smoked a bunch of cigarettes and hookah, which was fun. But today, I couldn't care less whether or not I get nicotine in me.

Re: Cigarettes.
it is scary how fucking addictive nicotine is...tolerance by the way is a one way street with those things.....
the nicotinic receptors growth, which occurs as an effect of nicotine use, never go away
the direct release of AcH raises the intensity.....particularly why people like smoking while (high, drunk(opiate cross over), cranked, crunk, juced, whateva)
the shit is the fucking devils weed....
not to mention modern cigarette tobacco has many other chemicals, and uses a particular method of processing tobacco with ammonia to freebase the nicotine molecule....(thats right kids!...it gets you higher)
nevertheless there is always a percent group of people that can kick the the habit no matter what...that is who the stop smoking or your money back commercials are mostly aimed at.......
(makes me wonder what kind of chemical/structural difference they posses)
i have stopped smoking after light cigarette consumption for about 4 years)
i relapse for one week during finals particularly the moments of {poor sleep}/{strong stress}.
I have noticed that i can smoke 10 cigarettes in a single day but not develop an addiction unless i develop a daily habit...particularly smoking at a certain time of day....such as the; morning, after school, after lunch, bed...ect...smoke...
weaning does not work....
dont smoke less....simply smoke fewer days..
or stop being pussys and go on a murder/suicide rampage.....eventually you will sink into a depression unless your brain can pick up production of AcH.....which it will.....but with all the extra nutrients comes the hunger and the extra calories in which the nutrients are packaged.....you get fat(er) :) fatty.....but now you are less likely to develop a range of AcH related nasties as you age.......yay!

Re: Cigarettes.
I dont smoke ciggies, just weed. My mate smokes though, his mum buys him his skins and baccy(he's 14 sooo... yea, although so am i... boy am i gonna regret saying that lol) he smokes one in the morning i think and i dunno how many when he gets home, probably about 3 when he gets home, although i think hes starting to stop smoking ciggie. Although we still get stoned pretty much every other weekend
EDIT: i did try it once at 11 (all the cool kids were doing it ;) ) and i didnt know how to take it in and ended up swallowing it or just blowing it back out and i felt retarded asking. I know now though

Re: Cigarettes.
It helps if you vary the times in which you smoke a cigarette. Try to hold off on smoking as long as you can when you want one - I always had to do that anyway, because I was almost never in a place where I could light up. I quit over a year ago, and still going strong - not a single cigarette, although last night (funny timing on this thread :p) I took a few pulls from a friend's. I'm ashamed. :(
The craving has never gone away completely, but I usually only feel it while around cigarettes. I don't even notice unless I start thinking about 'em. My other piece of advice: stay away from anyone who smokes.

I started smoking 1-2 a day and progressed to half a pack a day over the span of about a year, then quit cold turkey without the slightest sense of a craving. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe it's because I'm healthy/16 years old.

I've been smoking since I was 14. About a pack a day.. or more if I'm doin drugs like E or coke, or even worse.. crack.. I'd need to smoke a butt before every rock to get ash to smoke it!
I've quit for a week - grandpa died and smoked again.
I quit for 20 days and was done with them.. like an idiot I forced myself to smoke them.
I "quit" yesterday too.. only had one all day, haven't had any today, this threads making me want one though.

Re: Cigarettes.
I smoked no more than three total from ages 1-14. Turned 15, mom got married. That is the day i started, i lifted like 5 from some guys pack at the wedding he left unattended. They went outta town, so I smoked em and enjoyed. Picked it up, like buying a pack once every week and a half, then sneaking out at night to have a few.
Got caught over Spring Break, started being allowed to smoke. Picked it up: 1 after school, 1-2 at night. That's it.
Got my license. "1 in the morning, 1 after school, 1 at night". Summer started. PACK A DAY. School started. 6 a day. Grandma came, doesn't know. 3 a day. NOW? 5-15 a day. Smoked two packs yesterday though, lolllzzz..

I have been trying to quit since the 2nd. Haven't made it a day without smoking yet, even while taking Wellbutrin. I NEED to fucking quit, especially if I'm going to join the Army.
Before I used to smoke a pack a day for the past 4 years, now I am down to 2-7 cigs a day, but that's still not good enough.
It's hard as fuck. Especially with hte every day stress, without cigarettes it is unbearble.
I start to hate everybody, even my friends and family. I wish everyone would just leave me the fuck alone.

There was actually a clinical study published recently on how it's a whole lot easier for younger people to quit smoking. The thing that makes/breaks a potential addiction is tradition. If you say, have coffee and a cigarette ever morning, your brain will emphasize the importance(and need) of smoking as a daily process. It's sort of becomes "coded" into your circadian rhythms(not the same mechanisms though, but similar).

I'm sorry if someone else has said this already, but why bother quitting? I mean, how can you stand the idea of living to a ripe old age anyway?
I plan to die some time around my 40s. I am disgusted by old people. They are unproductive, annoying, and just look fucking miserable.
The sole reason I intend to take up smoking cigarettes in the near future is so that I will get addicted and die a quick, painkilled, lung-cancery death.
Not to sound emo or anything, but why bother quitting? How can you live knowing that someday you'll be all shriveled up and dilapidated? Chances are the quality of your hearing, vision, and overall outlook on life will be decreased drastically.
I say live to its fullest and have fun while you still can!

Exactly why I smoke. Who knows if I will die next week or in 50 years, so I plan on enjoying everything I can until then, and I don't really plan on living past say 65, because after that quality of life starts to go downhill real fuckin fast. Though I would like to be around to see my great grand kids.

Arghhhh...
i typed that when i was out of it...i tend to make foolish mistakes when i am in these states
i meant ACh (acetylcholine)
sorry for the idiotic mistake
but it is well documented.....as far as the relation to nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors ....just google it
alterations to the system seem to be, anything close to, if not preferment....google it
the rush of acetylcholine makes, either the natural or chemically induced, dopamine rush that much more satisfying
but it is much more complex then that.....i do not know enough to properly explain it here.

it doesnt really bother me that i smoke, never has, never will.
neways, id recommend against using a patch, theyre shitty... and basically the reason why i ended up going cold turkey.
Oh well.
