What to do.. what to do..
It appears as if I can only think about it. I've liked this gal since last year when we had a class together.. we chatted a little bit.. but that's it. This year, after not talking (Had different classes after that semester and didn't really know each other well enough during the summer, so it died off for a while).. I decide to finally start talking to her and after hanging out a few times and thousands of messages/texts/ims and hours of time spent talking about anything, it's really pressing on my mind how much I like her.. it's one of those moments where you feel like you can just take on the world. She seemed to like me as well. I've never met such a similar opposite with so many common interests.
Who knows if I waited too long or didn't wait long enough. We're talking online and eventually the conversation gets towards relationships and then I find out her situation. Turns out she likes a guy who likes her, that was put together about 3 years ago and then he moves to another state, but comes back here during the summer and thats when they date. Ouch, my confidence. Naturally the conversation blows back to me and she wants to know what my situation is. This eventually leads to me blatantly telling her that I like her as awkward as it is. You miss 100% of the chances you don't take.. even if the chances of something happening is astronomical. She describes this as "Oh.. wow" (not quite sure what that meant) and then asked if we could still be friends because she likes talking/hanging out with me and for me not to disappear out of her world because she can't control who I like and who she likes. (felt like a "I really don't wanna make this a rejection because you're a nice guy" rejection)
The more I dwindled my thoughts on it, the more I beat myself up over it. I cut without measuring twice and fucked up. I tried making 3 pointer with a blindfold on. I never quite got past go and collected my $200. I pissed into the wind and got splashed back on. All of these analogies are rather incomplete and nonsensical probably.. but I can't get her off my mind and can't think of any way that this could work out towards my want.. I've got a snowball's chance in Hell. I don't want to quit and become a brother-like friend or shitcan the whole thing and just start again elsewhere.
I'm left with "What to do.." going through my mind as I can do the only thing I know to do.. think.

What do you mean?
But I think I get what you're saying.. yeah in a way and no. I'm average I guess, not quite amazing and not quite ugly looking.. but I don't really know how to gauge how I look on a chick.. I don't exactly think "Damn, I'm prettier than that chick".

Yeah I am.
And I suppose so.. not like having a good friend is bad, it's just going to be a little awkward to me while hanging out.
Meh.. c'est la vie.

oh yeah having a good friend is bad. but guys who have good female friends are generally gay, ive noticed. if you were in college you would never have to see her again. now your relationship is going to be kind of awkward for a while or just disintegrate
