Default Mycology - Questions and Comments

Forgive me if this is the incorrect forum but i could not quit find the best place to put this .. if BLTC or Green Planet or oral indulgances lol
I figure GP is more of a save the earth type place and and oral is food relacted and BLTC would be more suited for mycology obviously im sure you have figured by now i speak of psilocybe cubensis rather then the classic otc edible cultures but i have some general questiosn and have do a large amount of research

Now to start general questions I hear that a brown rice / perlite substrate is most common amoung first time growers VS rye / perlite though i have heard the benifits of rye vs brown rice as a substrate is brown rice if properly adjatated while mycelium grows can be used for mass inoculation of other substrates i was wondering if any experianced growers can give pro's and cons of the brown rice vs rye

now secondly is i plan on doing of course a multiple strain inoculation with a spore syringe now i heard the con of this is of course the multi spore genrally has lower fruiting and more aborts due to unfavoritable strains

i was wondering after my first harvest if i could use live tissue that shows favoritable growth and size to inoculate multiple other cakes to have a higher fruiting potential and if so if there is a specfic part of the mushroom i should use for live tissue innoculation or if it matters.. also my concern is if im useing a live tissue innoculation the fear of contamination from the surface of the mushroom

also of course i wish to collect spores as well from mushrooms with good traits and hopefully make syringes so i can have properly hydrated spore syringes .. i was wondering what the best temp to store syringes at are..

also im curious what the best way to tell if you have a full colonization of a rye substrate is when you are constantly adjatating it .... the mycelium is mixed around alot .. is it generally a time thing or is it a careful eye ?

also when it comes to sterilization i should be working ina full plexy glove box hopefully soon but some concerns with pressure cooking .. i have heard you can optionally just boil your substrates in a large pot granted the jars are off the bottm using like jar lids thou the risk of contamination is larger .... i was wondering thougts on this ...

im also intrested in captureing strains in a agar medium such as PDA to grow more favoritable strains again thou im wondering if live tissue will work or what the best way to grow tissue on agar is ...

and just in case soem one asks im planing on useing the panaeolus cyanescens strain aka Blue Meanie im wonderign that the general *avarage* fruiting weight dry is my plan is to use a rye substrate spreading out in a pan and sterilizing soil and perlite and useing as a toping on top of the rye substrate as im told this is most common in larger cultivation methods

just looking for ideas and oppions on improving growth size and cloning tech's as well as mass cultivation not giant but larger also im am planing on useing a old fridge and regulate temp to about 86 as i hear this is optimal for mycelium growth i do realise my questions be better responded to by the people over at shoomery but i just wanted to see who knows what here so i can compare to people over there and debate what i wish to do

thanks guys

First off, the PF tek is Brown rice flour and vermiculite, perlite is used to humidify your fruiting chamber.

was wondering if any experianced growers can give pro's and cons of the brown rice vs rye
Of course.
Whole Grains
Pros-
-Very cheap. about 20lbs for $10.
-Colonize faster. You can shake these and you aren't limited to tapered jars.
-Possibility of Grain to grain transfer: 1 jar can be turned into 100 relatively easily. You can also use 1 colonized grain to make an entire spore syringe.
-More nutritious than brown rice flour: larger yields.
-Easily spawned to bulk substrates.
Cons-
-A Pressure cooker is required to sterilize whole grains completely.
-It takes about a day to prepare whole grains.
PF-TEK
Pros-
-Still relatively cheap.
-Very easy and VERY forgiving.
-takes about a 1 and a half hours to prepare.
-Can be spawned to bulk.
Cons-
-Slower than whole grains.
-Vermiculite can sometimes be hard to find.

So yeah, PF-Tek would be best for your first grow.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself. But yeah, we call what you described either: cloning or Liquid Culture. Either way, it involves taking a tissue sample and putting it in a nutritious jar of karo.

Anyhow, You certainly have studied up on this. But I still strongly recommend you sign up an account on shroomery.org . If you do end up doing that, feel free to ask me any questions via PM(same username as &T). They have pictures and really detailed tutorials that will describe what you are trying to do.

Good luck with your grow :)

hey thanks for the time and i have been reading a bit on shroomery ... i have come across PDA ager so i think i will go this route i beleive i will use the PF-tek method first round to find favroable growth and size and use the a PDA ager to clone the strain and then go with a whole grain second round and case but one thing im intrested in that i have not found much info on and i have seen mentioned quite a bit on shrommery is "dipping" im not 100% what it is but i seem to see alot more fruiting when this is used is there anyone that might be able to explain this a bit more ?

anyways thanks again and maybe i will registrer at shroomery

I think you're thinking of dunking and rolling. Basically, dunking is a technique that fortifies the H2O content of you cakes(sort of like a casing). To dunk your cakes, all you have to do is place your cakes in distilled H2O, and let them soak for an hour or two. Then, you take them out, and roll them around in vermiculite, sort of like making battered fried chicken. It's an optional step, but it usually pays off to do it.
