How am I not addicted yet?
Over the last few months I've been smoking my sisters cigarettes. One week I was having at least 3 a day, then I'd have a week and not have any at all.
I'd say overall I've had about 80 cigarettes, all over a period of about 2 months. The time when I'm not smoking, I never crave or even think about cigarettes. I smoke because it makes me feel relaxed at the time, but that's about it.
How many cigarettes would it take to be really addicted? Not that I want to, just the way I was always advised never to try smokes, I thought having a couple would make you addicted straight away.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
I've been smoking ciggarettes since I was 12 and I have NEVER been addicted. When I was 15 I use to get a pack every other day too.I only smoke a couple ciggarettes a day now tho.I only really enjoy cigs if I go the whole day without them and then spark one up at night.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
Haha, all you people make me laugh... "I smoke like a pack a day but I'm not and have never been addicted" *rolls eyes* I don't know what people smoke cigarettes at all. If you're going to slowly kill yourself at least get something out of it. Cigarettes give no positive benefits... If you don't smoke normally and smoke some Marlboro Reds or something you'll get a dirty, sickly, "buzz", that'll make you nauseas, but that's about the best you'll get. I just don't see how people are willing to spend $4 - 20 a day killing themselves, making them, their clothes, house, and car smell like ass, etc etc with no upside... But to be honest, you probably aren't addicted because cigarettes just aren't your thing. I smoked once upon a time... Daily, Marlboro Reds. For a few months, then I just stopped. Never had a craving, didn't feel anxious, didn't feel like I need one, etc. I really think the talk about nicotine craving is a bunch of overblown non-sense. If people who were trying to quit smoking cigarettes had ever had to quit say... Oxycontin or Heroin, I think they'd realize they are being little bitches about it and just get over smoking. Besides, it only takes 48 hours to get out of your system completely. Anything after that is completely mental addiction...

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
Only those with addictive personalities become addicts. Sure, you can build up tolerance to a drug and suffer withdrawals, but only some people have a need to do more. Personally, I couldn't become addicted if I tried, I dislike the feeling of dependence more then the withdrawal from any drug. I have a feeling that this is true with the majority of the population.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
It depends on what you mean by addict. If you're including chemical dependence under the name, "addiction", then you're wrong. If that's the case, not only those with addicted personalities become addicts. Many people with legit problems who would never do drugs or become addicted to them end up with problems with things like opiates/opioids or Benzos. And I don't think that is how most the population feels, sadly... Otherwise the average person in America wouldn't be in ~7 grand of debt. *shrugs*

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
hmmm. Well technically I should be taking benzos daily, I personally just can't stand the ups and downs combined with the feeling of dependence. I have pretty bad anxiety and am one of those fortunate souls who can stick with a benzo dose and still
get effects from it without having to keep increasing the dose. I was thinking of maybe trying one of those super long-lasting benzos, but I suspect they are an expensive Rx.

Addiction is a result of your brain becoming dependent on the nicotine.
You, my good sir, are lacking the proper equipment.

i can quit shooting dope, thats easy. but cigarettes, you know the socially acceptable addiction that you can drive up to any conveinece/grocery/liquor/goods store and buy 20 fixes for $5 and change, and than proceed to beable to smoke em in the open, without being looked down upon, is where the line gets drawn..

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
You're quoting my post as if it has something to do with what you've said...? You personally seem to have an addiction to altering your consciousness. It just so happens that since cigarettes are fairly legal, that you can do them in public and get away with it. You'd do the same thing with heroin if you could. But that still has nothing to do with the withdrawals of either of the two like my post was talking about...

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
I have been on cocaine and crack to the point of smoking a ball a day. I've been on morphine, IV'd every day for months. I've been on a shit ton of meth everday for almost a year. I was addicted to alcohol badly for about a year. The booze is the only that started fucking with my life though.
And I have put down every single one of those drugs without a single problem (except the booze, that shit sucked) and I've been smoking a pack of cigarettes a day every day for over a decade, and despite trying to quit countless times, and despite being KEPT from cigarettes for sometimes months at a time, as in, NO nicotine what so ever, and yet here I am making this post with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth.
Meth coke crack and morphine were NOTHING to quit. Yet, I still can't help but put 20+ nails in my coffin every single day.

same like any other addiction..
its kind of like "im not addicted, i could totally go without this cig right now" but you wont, youll smoke it anyways. and then youre going to keep wanting cigs to feel 'relaxed' then it will evolve to being recreational, then to a dozen other things. Congrats, youre addicted.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
You can smoke it with very little paranoia. Though some people do get hassled for cigs, even fined on occasion, chances of going to Remand or San Quentin is slim.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
Quitting cigarettes is not an easy task, it's a waste of money and very detrimental to your health. If you're not addicted yet, be happy and never smoke ever again.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
I just quit smoking a few days ago, and despite mixing tobacco n weed together for a few years, and having occasional cigarettes for over a year or so (and then quitting all tobacco for 4-5 months..) I have only been properly smoking for about 5-6 months. I definitely find tobacco to be one of the most addictive, and habit forming activities I have indulged in... sure, it's all about willpower kinda, but I can just "feel" that it's a physical addiction too.
Whenever I stop smoking after smoking for a while, I get a sore throat and the feeling of an oncoming cold, fair enough it's never "that" bad, but strangely enough it passes in a few days.... it seriously is the nicotine addiction. I'm going travelling in 2 months, and i'm pretty keen to stop smoking for a while to get fit, clear out my lungs n save money... even though I smoked only 1-8 cigs a day, and usually 2-3 or so, I still found it crept up on me faster than I was expecting.
OP, mainly it's about when you really start to enjoy smoking, and the nicotine hit... it just becomes such a "why not?" action, it's compulsive. To reach that stage might take some years of smoking, and others only a few months, but it'll hit eventually. You really haven't smoked enough to be feeling properly "addicted", as part of smoking addiction is the mental cravings and the habit...
Buy some smokes tomorrow, have just one, and then keep the rest of the packet for a week or two..... chances are you'll end up lighting at least another few up :p

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
Like someone else said, cigarette addiction really does sneak up on you. And yeah, it's also habitual. You smoke and think nothing of it but then when it becomes a part of a routine, you can't imagine doing that thing without a cig to accompany it, i.e. driving, drinking coffee, walking outside, etc. You can think you can quit at any time, but really, when it comes down to it, it's much harder than you think.

Re: How am I not addicted yet?
Yes, it's very common for people to claim they aren't addicted. They always claim I'm not addicted; I can stop whenever I want... I just don't want to right now. Or something to that affect. When in actuality they would have a very difficult time even ceasing use for a day.
