Christians and Marijuana
I don't know if this is old or not but I haven't seen it so I'm guessing not. This is blog that I read showing me how crazy they get over a natural plant.
http://users.hubwest.com/prophet/articles/maryjane.htm
Brings a quote to mind..
"GOD MADE PLANTS FOR THE BENEFIT OF MAN, MARIJUANA IS A PLANT, THEREFORE GOD MADE IT FOR THE BENEFIT OF MAN. IT OPENS UP A PERSON'S MIND SO THAT THEY CAN FLOW IN THE SPIRIT." THE TRUTH IS THAT THE SPIRIT WHICH THIS PLANT OPENS ONE UP TO IS THE SPIRIT OF THE DEVIL. THIS "INNOCENT NATURAL HIGH" IS REALLY JUST THE BAIT THAT THE DEVIL USES TO CAPTIVATE THE SOUL (MIND, WILL AND EMOTIONS). THE DEVIL IS THE MASTER OF DECEPTION!!! READ SOME CASE HISTORIES OF THOSE IN MENTAL WARDS, MOST OF THEM STARTED OUT SO "INNOCENTLY" ON MARIJUANA.

Re: Christians and Marijuana
Religions fucked up this world not drugs.
I've seen purists that refuse to even take a drink. On the other hand, I've seen some of the most religious people start preaching His good word while choking down pills with a drink and then taking a drag of the joint they just lit.

Re: Christians and Marijuana
This is nothing spectacularly interesting or offensive. Most religious people find it easier or better to follow their leaders blindly and bask in ignorance, then to think for themselves and deal with the consequences of knowledge. Organized religion is very stupid. Especially Christianity and the like, which are based on and amplify fear, not love.
That is not to say that religion is the only fault within our very complex and slowly degrading cultures, nor that some of the ideas they attempt to preserve over thousands of years are inherently wrong. While I personally don't believe any religion, I still maintain an understanding of God, the oneness and allness of reality.
So they are wrong ... what can you do? Should you do anything?

Who gives a shit what anybody thinks about drugs? Personally, I feel that you either do drugs or you don't. People waste too much time trying to justify their position.

No, I haven't stepped foot in a church in almost 4 years. I've just chilled with a friend and I've become quite familiar with his family. Hell, I almost dated one of his sisters... Anyway, this woman is fucked beyond anything. She was tweaked or nodding for most of her pregnancies not to mention her mandatory drink, weed, and whatever pills she can get. This woman is what everyone fears they'll become if they go too far. Without her drugs and alcohol, she'd be dead in one day from withdrawls and she's not even half as bad as she once was, but she is hardcore Christian for whatever reason.

well seeing as that they are preaching a doctrine of close minded beliefs SOMETHING has to be done, but honest what can? those people wont listen to facts and scientific reason, as they are the work of "TEH EVIL DEVILZORS".

I agree that when they try to push their views on others, that should be stopped. Everyone should have the chance to think about things for themselves, nobody should ever just accept something.
But we should not try to change, or "correct", their opinions/beliefs anymore then they should be able to change ours. Just like the War on Drugs; if they don't want to do them, thats fine, but they shouldn't stop us.

There's confusion no matter what. Even the purist who beleive every word of their religion still are confused about insane amounts of issues. It's not even worth getting into unless you want to bitch and moan for a few hours about what's what.

I never said anything specific, I said theism. I am a theist, but certainly not a 'purist'.
What I mean, is that from an atheists point of view, there is a lot of confusion. Why are things this way, how did this all begin ... and every answer only poses further questions.
As a theist, I already have the final answer.

It wasn't particularly aimed at your specific piece. I was just making a point of what this is going to turn into. I can tell you you are far from a purist for the simple fact they are sheeple wanting to be hearded. They're just looking for the next Charlie Manson.

How can you not see it? If I do this, then I'm bad. I was born imperfect; therefore, I'll never attain what I should be, but I must try bacause I don't want to suffer in the after-life.

You can't deny it. It even gives a prime example of attempted human sacrifice for kicks because "god" wanted to make sure he was a dedicated follower.

Yep. People need to think for themselves. And leave others, and their beliefs, alone.

Re: Christians and Marijuana
The problem with trying to explain things with Christianity is that if it's not in the Bible, the discussion could easily head either way. Take indulgences for example, there are arguments for and against it, same as there are 2 arguments for marijuana, and 2 for virtually all other subjects not explicit in the Bible.
If you're a Christian, make your own decision because you certainly don't know the nature of God (or the Devil for that matter, either could have made the plant, you don't know) and the Bible isn't telling you what to think of marijuana anyway. Unless there's something explicit in there, rest assured that the opposing argument will have exactly as much ground as yours does.

Okay, perhaps the devil corrupted either the plant or the experience. Either way, there are arguments to support both sides, which is why using scripture to back up arguments not mentioned in the Bible is useless; there will always be another side that's equally right (at least by religious debate standards).

Re: Christians and Marijuana
I think most of the Christian objection stems from the "my body is a temple" line. That, and you can do sinful things you later regret while under the influence.
I think Christians should be free to abstain from drugs, but I don't see why they have to encroach on the choices other people make that aren't as abstentious.
I am an atheist and can't see any reason to believe in or worship a god. I don't smoke pot simply because I don't like it; I feel other people should be free to do so.

Abstaining is one of the main points of Christianity, to say no to the "Devil" and his temptations. I've gone to church every Sunday morning with my parents since I can remember, I decided myself that the role I was meant to play according to that book was impossible, and I deducted that maybe there isn't even a God at all. My parents still think I'm a Christian thought, I'm hoping they'll put 2 and 2 together one of these days.

One of the most devout Christians I know smokes. He's a good, nice, standup guy, like you'd never know. He doesn't push it on anyone, except when we wanna go do bad shit like steal he just turns it down. I like those kinda people, he actually meditates and shit high, he's real cool. If someone hasn't posted this already, it's pretty funny/interesting. There's a few parts to it. It's about a church that actually uses weed to worship.
It applies here somewhat, otherwise I would have put it in IFIOTW..

Hahahaha. :D
I was talking about the Christians in the above.
And, for the record, I do incorporate the use of entheogens into my spiritual rituals.
But if you want to bring that up, that that video is still is just one kind of extremist group arguing with another. The 'drug-church' crowd in that video still listens to a preacher, still quote from the bible; they are more "enlightened" then the American-Flag-Tie wearing asshole group, but they still follow like sheep. Just differently.

I am Christian.
It's just like with PETA. 99% of people don't care about the animals at all its just the 1% who is really loud and gets heard. So like with Christianity all of the really hardcore people with nothing else to stand for act all religious and preach to everyone. There's actually nothing against drugs thats all made up but it sort of says to just follow moderation and respect your body which is pretty much common sense. But then the stupid 1% need something to make them feel better so they preach down to everyone.

But that can be interpreted so many ways.
Maybe some people, like the Christian extremists in thatkidej's video, would interpret drug use, tattoo's, body piercings, etc. as things which are disrespectful to their bodies.
But maybe others think its disrespectful not to partake in that which God has provided, maybe others think body piercings, tattoos and the use of entheogens greatly honor their bodies.
