But humans begin to suffer health problems after about 11 days of staying awake. And I believe rats die after are a month of staying awake. You see, if the case you may be speaking of, that few hours of "inaction" is more or less their sleep. The body just changes itself to get used to how they are trying to live and work around it. For instance, if you start trying to get only a couple hours of sleep a night (which isn't long enough to normally go into REM sleep, which your body needs to live) your body will start going into REM sleep almost as soon as you go to bed. This way, you still get the REM sleep you need to stay alive/sane.
