I too, just read through 13 pages until 0200. Lots of good information.

Here's some information for Aussie shoplifters from the perspective of a long-time employee for a Coles supermarket.

WARNING: The texts depicted below are for informational and educational purposes only, I do not condone stealing in any situation, and I do not take, nor imply any responsibility herein if you use the below information in any way contrary to its informational nature. The information listed below should not be used in anyway to assist in shoplifting, nor should it be used to undermine the security of any Cole's supermarket in anyway.

Okay, legal mumbo-jumbo over.

CCTV

The only camera's that are functional and recording are the camera's:

*Near the batteries/appliances.
*At the entrances, exits and fire-escapes.
*In the front-end of the store, point-of-sale (checkouts).
*Near candy bars, magazines, chips etc.
*Near the drink fridges.
*Near vitamins and medicine.
*Entrances into store-rooms and staff-rooms.

Common blind-spots include:

*Fruit & veg/produce.
*Deli.
*Dairy fridges.
*Baking goods.
*Pet food.
*The long back aisle

The camera's are not monitored, the store has one camera monitor in the manager's office, and is usually switched off, the camera's have the ability to zoom in/out, and can pan. The video footage is stored for 14 days locally, and is then deleted. The monitor can only monitor up to 5 camera's at any one time, and the camera's monitored most are checkouts, exits and fire-doors.

LP

*No product under $10 will set off the sensors.

*Coles doesn't prosecute for any amount under $20.

*There are no specially trained LP; managers and some filling staff are trained in loss prevention, managers are all out of the store after 5PM Monday-Friday, weekend managers, night-fill managers and "2IC's" are not trained in loss prevention.

*It's store policy not to follow people after they are off store property, and is also store policy not inform the police unless the dollar amount stolen exceeds $20 and/or the person is a known/serial shoplifter.

*RFID tags are usually the plastic rectangular ones, and are easily visible. On the inside's of large boxes (appliances and so-forth) there are tags on the underneath of the box lid. All tags are easily taken off with a knife or even by hand.

*Apart from the meat which has a dollar value exceeding $30 no meat will have any tags whatsoever, the tags on expensive meats are underneath the price/information label. Rip the plastic lining off, and whack the tray into a bag (on shit like steaks, sausages, etc.)

The staff

The staff are usually either bored teenagers who steal shit themselves (or who don't give a flying fuck if you do), or busy over-worked managers who have other stuff to worry about than shoplifters. Generally nobody particularly cares if an alarm goes off, during my time as an employee I'd only ever glance over at the sensors for a second, shrug it off and resume work.

The policies and insecurities I mentioned are the same at all Coles Supermarkets across Australia. Have fun.

Whenever I go on a 'shopping' spree I bring:
  • Inconspicuous baseball hat (it's one of those sk8r boi ones you see all the time now, stole it from some kid at school) to hide your face (and in my case my hair)
  • Large shoulder bag with a zipper top. I made it so the top folds over a bit so I can have it open and easy to get into without people seeing it. (put a few items in it before hand so it isn't obvious when you don't go in with an empty bag and leave with a full one). This is for putting stolen items in, if you haven't already guessed.
  • Baggyish pants, for putting items down if there is more security (cameras, people watching). When I'm paying for items at the counter I can actually take things there by sticking them down my pants, very discrete.
  • Exact-o knife. A very sharp one. For removing tags and security stickers.
My favorite place to go is the mall. Mine has really low security and if you go during the day on a school day it's almost empty and very low staffed.

Basically, I just pick a store, go in a browse. When I see something I like I place it behind a blind spot, wait until the staff is distracted and stuff it into my bag.

For clothes, if there is tags then take it into the dressing room to remove them. If it's the kind of place that counts how many items you take in, stuff something in your bag like you were stealing it, take it into the dressing room to take the tag off with stuff you'll pretend to put on but just put back.

CD's are trickier since almost all of them have those goddamn stickers on the top. Find a CD, check if it has the sticker on top. If not your in the clear. If not, move to a bli;nd spot and quickly remove it with your exacto knife. It just just take a couple swipes.

If you're being followed around by staff and you think you're caught, take them off guard. Go right up to them and ask them for something you know they don't have. This gives you a reason to be there and a reason to leave immediately.

If you set off an alarm, don't run! Those things go off all the time for no reason and in a busy mall half the time the staff don't even hear them. So pretend you don't either. Maintain a steady pace. Look straight ahead. Look confident. If you didn't look suspicious in the store they wont come after you. If they do, then is the time to book it (or surrender, if you chose).

In between stores, head outside and take the tags off everything. It's also good to have a stash spot (a car or something) so if you get busted it'll just be for a few items, not everything you have stolen.

Also, give it a rest. Don't go to the same store every day and steal shit unless you need to. Very suspicious, especially if you don't buy anything.

Happy shopping!

Do you feel that the should bag doesn't get you any extra attention?

It seems like it would be a huge red flag for a man to walk into a store with any type of bag.

FYI all video games like xbox 360, ps3, and wii and the systems do not contain rfid's. Sometimes the stores are sneaky and place them on the plastic wrap but that is it. I don't know about pc games but regular have nothing. SWIM was snowed in today so he couldn't get anywhere.

Whenever I get 360 games, there's two security tags on the inside of the case, behind the manuals and shit. This is from stores lie ebgames and gamestop though, so it could just be them.

They are here, as well (Irving, TX). I got my dumb ass caught (I was being overconfident and just walked around the store slicing packaging open with a boxcutter blade instead of doinitrite) a few days ago. Target AP will call the police for shoplifting over $20 or if you have no ID, claim to have legal powers to pursue you beyond store property, and (in my case) don't ban shoplifters (at least the first time?) but will 'be watching them'.

It's near-impossible to spot the plainclothes AP, by the way. They have small radios (or 'walkies', that one's annoyingly popular these days) clipped sideways to the front of their pants, so there's no looking around for people with bulges above their asses.

Well where I get my games they're only in s3 cases. So there are no rfids inside game cases well I always hope not. My history of buying games I have never found one inside, but only on the outside sometimes. So then i just grab and go.

Mannn today was kinda a fun trip. First I went to walmart and got some headphones, then I tried to take it to the outdoor section and use the register there to disarm the tag. Couldn't get it to work though, there was one of those laser gun sorta things and I tried to run it over the barcode a few times but couldn't get it to work. Some people saw me and thought I worked there though...

So I didn't wanna make it a complete waste of time so I grabbed some gloves and a few packages of earrings. The gloves I tore the tag off and the earrings I figured they were cheap, why would there be a security tag on them (completely forgot that all the earring packages are tagged). Luckily I'm good at getting past the door alarms, so I made sure I had my cell out and pretended I was texting, and I walked next to someone that had a bag, and I did a nice surprised look when the alarm went off. The lady at the door asked to check the other guys receipt while I walked right by

Then I went to Safeway and grabbed tons of stuff...got some food at the deli...bunch of other food I needed...bagged it up with a bag I brought...grabbed a 6 pack of Captain Morgan...left.

If any LP touch me outside of the store...they better be prepare for beatdown.

they ARE not allowed to touch you outside of the store.

i don't really shoplift that much anymore through.

the only reason why they would "detain" you if you look weak and small(under 16 years old). so they can "take advantage of you". If they see a big scary guy stealing, there's no fucking way they would ever confront him in most cases.

Got an idea/story for y'all.

Went into Woolworths, with the intention of purchasing some groceries (fat chance of that happening, really). I started filling up my trolley with the shit I wanted. Milk, butter, energy drinks - just random stuff. Anyway, as I was walking around I noticed that every so-often the sensors at the door would go off - and nobody was ever near them. I asked a staff member about it, and they said "yeah, it's been doing that all day *sigh*"

I couldn't help but smile, and I think he noticed, because I was about to wheel it out of the store when this security guard comes up to me and he asks me "you gonna pay for those, or are you going to leave it here?"

I was considering running out with it, but it's a store I go to quite often (to purchase and steal from) so I thought better of it. I looked at him, then at the exit, and said "I /was/ going to pay for them - but if you think I'm a shoplifter, then perhaps I'll do my business elsewhere, in fact - I want to see your manager"

So, anyway, the manager was called - I said "I'm a loyal customer, been shopping here for years, got treated like a criminal *insert bullshit here*

I didn't end up with a trolley full of items, I did manage to get a $20 gift card as an apology though.

The moral of the story? Kick up a fuss if you get accused of shoplifting, and you'll get gift cards.

Yeah. Age is also a big factor too. A minor (under 18) would be far more likely to get detained than someone over the age of say, 30 or 40.

Some info on a few of the stores in my town:

Lances grocery store:
Generally very few people there. Alcohol kept out in the open, in a section that blocks everyone's view. No cameras except for the registers and the doors. iPod accessories are easily grabbed, sliced open, and hidden.

FYE Entertainment:
Generally one or two employees, never walking around unless they're restocking. No cameras. I walk in with booster bags in my pockets. I grab duplicates of whatever I want, go behind a rack, and pocket it. At the end, I get in the open, check my wallet, and play it of like I forgot my money, and return the duplicates I didn't pocket.

Circle K convenience store:
Cameras above the registers. I walk in, grab a cup, turn so I'm blocking it form view. Then press the button so it sounds like I'm filling it up. Then I take the empty cup, walk down the isles, and put gloves, pills, etc into the cup. Give the cashier $.75 and walk out (Polar Pop drinks are 74 cents with tax)

And a friendly reminder: If you use blades, be careful. I forgot I had my knife in my change pocket in my pants (facing down). I stuck my hand in to check for my change, pulled out my hand, and cut the shit out of it, all at 3a.m., while I was contemplating getting some stuff from the Circle K. There's no one in the ER that early in the morning, though. It was a quick visit. 5cm long gash, 13 stitches.

I'm wondering what kind of security tags would ever be in an electronic device such as a hard drive. I'm looking at an external hard drive and obviously there aren't any magnetic sensors in it, due to the harddriveness of it. Is there anything to be concerned about, in regards to someone chasing me out of the store? Is there any possibility of embedded security devices in the product that would set off the alarm? This is petty and i've done this before, but for some reason this particular chain scares be a bit and I would rather be safe than sorry.

btw, the product is unwrapped and ready to be shoved into my pocket.

thanks for the advice.

Ðvlad that pic brings back memories :P. Had a nice gash on the back of my hand and sliced my finger tips off a few times using scapels. Better off with a small box cutter, not as small, but i made a good one by wrapping it in cereal box cardboard and strapping tape. Has good grip and wont cut my hand apart.

If its unwrapped put it in your pocket buy a drink and walk out.If someone stops you say Oh forgot to pay for this.Or better yet if they have a self check out line buy the drink put it in the bag and the external harddrive and use the same excuse!

Thumbs up Re: *Official* Shoplifting Tips and Techniques Thread 4

ok this is how i go about doing things.
first, i have to say that walmart and target are the easiest and i have NEVER got caught because i know whens the right and wrong times to do it.

go in knowing what you want.
look normal and go with someone, pref a girl.
walk at normal pace to where the item is and not take a direct route, looking at stuff in between.
when heading there, spot out any workers and where is the best spot to take item.
when you take the item, look at it, talk about it to your friend and then walk out of that area.
got to an empty area of the store. i.e. crafts, toys, clothing.
open and put in pocket. it helps if you make a cutting tool.
il post an easy way later.
then pout the box/packing in a deep shelf or under some shit.
then walk out.
i always try to time it so i walk out with a random family with a lot of stuff, cause if the alarm does go off cause ur dumb, the family will stop and you can proceed!

any comments are welcome

I have been one of the people lurking for a couple years till they opened registration, i dont know if these have been listed but anyways sum good ways are buying a large mcdonalds pop if your store has one, drinking it in the store than putting anything you want in it as long as it will fit, this is easy way to avoid suspision of larger objects protruding out of ur clothing, another 1 that works nicely is just having spare wal-mart bags and bagging anything u want, at my store they never check and even if they do it helps if you know the door people personally
