I suggest you drill large holes into the tree and fill with blackpowder you buy from a store for muzzle loaders. Anything else is apt to fuck you up in the manufacture process.
Blackpowder is nothing to sneeze at either. It can easily take down any tree as long as the holes are drilled right, and the BP is loaded properly, with a quick match system that will light them all at the same time. Or ematch, whatever.
