Vegetarian.
My girlfriend wants to be a vegan/vegetarian when we get older. It was something her sister did when she was younger too, so it kind of rubbed off on her. Doing this is really important to her. I could care less about not eating meat any more, I love the stuff. She keeps trying to get me to read the books on it or what have you and whenever I tell her I don't want to talk about it or be a vegetarian or anything like that, she tells me I'm "Not supporting" her and that I should really learn about it to support her. Now, I support her, I've told her that. I told her I really like how she wants this, but I personally don't want it for myself. It just feels to me like she keeps pushing it on me, and I loath it when things get pushed onto my lap and I'm expected to like it. I really love her, I care about her and her well-being. I have no idea what to do really, please no "you fail lol" posts. Give me some honest advice.

Re: Vegetarian.
I went out with a vegetarian for a short while once...It wasn't exactly hard to live with.
But I couldn't do it personally, she should support your wanting to eat meat if she expects for you to support her not wanting to.

Re: Vegetarian.
I don't want to sound like I'm trying to be sassy but you should tell her that by her saying that you aren't being supportive of her veganism, she is not being supportive of your meat- eating ways. Don't say it like that but tell her that it isn't fair that she is pushing something you really don't agree with and blaming your resistance on lack of support for her. And it really isn't fair of her. You should tell her that you'll read about it so that you are at least a little bit educated about the whole thing, but if after that you still don't agree, then that's that.

Well I actually read a bit of one of the books, it was all about how meat has no nutrients at all and is actually very bad for you or something. Then it had like, recipes and the such. *shrug*

Re: Vegetarian.
My girlfriend's vegan and into the whole animal rights thing. Hell, I think that it's pretty cool. I'm only a Junior in high school and finding someone who is somewhat socially aware to a point beyond parroting their parents own views is something that I am personally very happy with. All I said when she told me was "I think the dude from Goldfinger is too." But it doesn't affect us in anyway. She's fine with me eating meat (being in HS I must point out the gay in that). I read this peta2 booklet for her, and told her that I'd need to do more, slightly less biased, research on my own before even considering it.
That being said, the fact that a meal of meat takes so much more food sources than a vegetarian (or vegan) meal is the part that ingrigued me the most. Really, animals aren't my bag, but social inequality and people are. So that little bit is what really spoke to me.
If I were you, I'd sit down with her and read a booklet or just listen to her feelings on it. Support her decision by trying to eat vegetarian or vegan when you are around her. Tell her that you personally aren't intrested in doing it, but if she is then you'll support her whenever you're there.
Then again, you might be much older than me and in a relationship way beyond my age/maturity level.
EDIT: damn 4 people responded before I could finish typing.

Well, then, you need to continue to be your own meat-eating person, but agree to disagree, and maybe have a "vegan dinner' night every week or so, where you prepare it for her or something. Something sweet like that. So she knows you care. Aww.

Re: Vegetarian.
My girlfriend is vegetarian. She doesn't give a flying fuck about me eating meats. Even through if I tease her about "it had face....feets....and hair!"
If she's cooker type who cook dinner for you. Just eat it anyway....It's good for ya and eat meat when she's not looking ;)

I told her I'd learn this stuff on my own, with not-so-biased literature. One of the books is "Vegetarian for dummies" :P

Re: Vegetarian.
I'm vegetarian, and live with my boyfriend, who eats meat. He's great about it though, we usually cook vegetarian at home, if only because its easier than cooking two seperate meals. Although I sometimes tease him, I would never seriously ask or make him become vegetarian... but deep down, I'd still love it if he did. Just because it would mean that we were on the same wavelength about something I feel very strongly about. He seems to agree with most of my moral objections, but I guess he just likes it too much to give it up! I think its a good idea for you to do a bit of your own research into the meat industry... it might change the way you think a little. But I don't think it's fair to her to force it on you. Perhaps you can compromise with her... eat less meat at home, buy good quality organic meat, look at where the meat is coming from... find a decent local butcher rather than buying nasty processed supermarket shit? I know that kind of stuff really makes a difference to me... it might to her, too.

Re: Vegetarian.
You have to tell her, that you respect her desire to eat differently and will support her as such but that it would be wrong and rude of her to try and force her eating habits onto you.
And if she cant understand that.. well.. would you want to be with someone who's trying to force you to do something so random?

Re: Vegetarian.
This is the problem with vegans/vegetarians. They're not morally superior or anything, they just made a personal choice, and personal choices shouldn't affect anyone else.
Maybe explain that you support her without reading the books, that you don't need them and it's fine by you. This sounds a bit like an attention seeking thing though...

Re: Vegetarian.
I went out with a girl who tuned vegetarian halfway through the relationship, and it was fine. No change, she didn't tell me not to eat meat, I didn't make her eat meat.
I also had a vegan friend, who was a douche about the whole thing. He constantly made people feel bad about eating meat, tried to get into debates where he would talk like he was morally superior, and constantly acted better than everyone else because of it.
I don't dislike all vegans though, just him because he's a bigoted cunt.
But in answer to your thread, read the books. Tell her that you fully support her in everything she does, including this, but she has to understand that just as it is her choice not to eat meat, it's yours to eat it. If she is still saying you don't support her, then.. well, I don't know what to say. The above should work for any reasonable person.

Re: Vegetarian.
I'm vegetarian.... All my exes have been meat eaters and it hasn't bothered me.
The only time I have EVER asked one of them to give up meat was sort of half sarcasm and half spite when he was adamant that I had to give up smoking.... and I said "I'll give up smoking when you give up meat..... see... now do you see how ridiculous you sound??"
You shouldn't force your morals onto other people

Fuck you, the meat industry is bullshit, but no one's forcing you to do anything. And of course it's only gays who want to eat meat?
I'm a vegetarian, I don't force it on anyone. I'll explain my views and reasons for being vegetarian as long as someone wants to listen, but i don't proselytize. I've dated a girl who only dated vegetarians, and I've asked the girls I've dated to give it a try, some have, some haven't, and I haven't been mad when it didn't work for them.
Would it kill you to try and go a week without eating meat?

I didn't say only straight men eat meat, it was an obvious exaggeration you fuck, and I have gone a week without eating meat. I was more or less just trying to piss off that whole "have you seen the meat industry" crowd

I bet if you were to do a study on the sexuality of male vegans., 40-60% would be homosexual.

Re: Vegetarian.
Personally, I think she's being irrational by even asking you to read those books.
Be truthful with her. If my wife decided to stop eating meat, I'd say, "Okay." Then if she asked me to read some propaganda or change MY eating habits (not that she would), I'd refuse. If she pushed it, I'd start to push back and things would not end well.
Tell her that you ARE supporting her choice to not eat meat by not trying to change her mind. Also: she's NOT supporting YOU and your wish to eat meat. It's a choice, not a lifestyle.

It's the least you can do to make her happy.

Roughly means "I will talk about my views and reasons for being a vegetarian at any point I can, until someone punches me in the kidneys."
It's that last sentence that gets me.

I don't talk to people who won't listen.
That said, have you ever eaten in a vegetarian restaraunt? I guarantee it'll be some of the best food you've ever eaten.
This is off topic. Starting out being a vegetarian is hard, you have to change your habits. Stopping eating meat is kind of like stopping a drug. Asking for support is reasonable: it's hard, and without someone to say I'm hear, I'll go through this with you (at least partially), it sucks.
Asking her to support your meat eating habits... something you do every day and are completely used to? It's not difficult for you to continue eating meat, and it is difficult for her to become a vegetarian... So give her some support, man, she's asking soooo little of you.

Re: Vegetarian.
I have to say as well.... I've been veggie for quite a while, and eaten at many veggie places.... and the downside to most of them seems to be that they assume just because you don't eat meat, you must be some kind of health freak.... so the food is all organic and good for you.... you know.... brown rice, wholemeal pasta that sort of shit.
I'd much rather eat the token vegetarian option at somewhere that serves meat (unless its in spain.... then it always involves fucking goats cheese ICK)

Re: Vegetarian.
Vegeterian diet doesn't mean bloodless diet. Thousands of rabbits die in combine harvesters every year in grain fields etc.
From what I've read about the paleolithic diet:
"Ethnographic studies of living hunter-gatherer societies represent the best surrogate we have for estimating quantitatively the plant to animal subsistence ratios of stone-age humans. We have recently compiled ethnographic data from 181 worldwide societies of hunter-gatherers showing that the mean plant to animal subsistence ratio in terms of energy was 35% plant and 65% animal."

Re: Vegetarian.
I would do this:
If she's an animal-rights person, do some research of your own. Altho Im a total meat eater, how they kill and process livestock is fucked up. Maybe agree to give up everything but free range poultry and fish? One can definitely argue that meat is a nature part of the human diet. As long as the animals you eat arent really abused, I dont see why meat eating is that bad. It is, after all, a dog-eat-dog world...
