Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
A simple poll.
Is it your IMPRESSION that men on the whole come off the worse in divorce settlements/child custody proceedings?

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
They do indeed and it makes me sick and angry.
I want to get married someday but no fucking wonder my boyfriend seems clueless to that, considering all the bad press and shitty women out there determined to ruin a good sweet thing!
The poor fucker is probably terrefied I'm going to steal all his stuff and all his money and throw him out on the streets if we got divorced, and no wonder, considering how shitty and grabby some women can be.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
Wait a second...I know men get the raw deal. Theres no question whatsoever.
But I always thought that was an american thing. I'd kinda like to hear how it is over in europe and asia and other countries.
I'd bet my kidneys that it's a lot different in muslim countries.
EDIT: As an additional sidestory. My parents divorced a long time ago. My dad still loves my mom, and helps out in whatever way he can. I think he got the short end of the stick, but theres no alimony or anything nasty involved. He just gets a little jipped.
My mom is dating a new guy now. He's a successful entrepreneur with his own computer company that has him travelling worldwide. He's got however many kids, and a bitter ex-wife. She just got an inheritance above $1,000,000. I don't know the specifics, but it was an -ASSLOAD- of money. She used it to hire expensive lawyers to take him to the cleaners, just because she was so angry at him. Even though she had more then enough money, more then he has even...she wanted him to suffer. What a bitch.

Jackketch, can you add another option to the poll at all?
One that basically says that whilst there are alot of shit women out there, they're not all going to be money grabbing sluts and that there is hope yet for romance and marriage and bunnies and sunshine?
I'm afraid that a thread like this may make males here dislike women even more. Whilst it's fine to distrust us, to judge us all to be as bad as each other is terrible.

Sorry, don't think a poll can be edited :(
Anyways I just wanted to see if my feeling is right, at least among totse males (the intelligensia and our common future leaders...god help us!), that marriage is seen as financial suicide.

yeah ironically my mom was a social worker (though she was workin with natives and woman on parole). Haven't heard your Chris story but could imagine why workin for social services would sound good in theory which probly contributes to the severe lack of clues being distributed amongst social workers.

Yes, even when it it the woman who initiates the divorce. Thats why men will cling to an unhappy marriage for years, because as soon as it's over they are out of the pan and into the fire.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
Hell yes.
I was watching the news a few days ago, and apparently some guy who's had to move back in with his parents since he has to pay $400 in child support every single week. Another guy had to pay child support for a kid that wasn't even his. That's just fucked up.
The legal system sees men as smart devious underhanded bastards, and women are almost always the helpless victim.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
In my parents' case, no. My dad definitely got the better end of the deal. I also just heard about another situation where the husband left the wife with 3 kids and two dogs, took all of the money, and stopped paying rent about 3 months ago, so now the wife is getting evicted and is about to become homeless. But then again, this is Texas, and the divorce laws here definitely favor the man.
A friend of mine recently had his wife leave him for another woman, and he gets to keep everything, including the kids. She left him with a $300 cell phone bill from text messaging her girlfriend so much, but other than that, he got off really easily. He kept their truck, he stayed in the house that they were living, kept all of the furniture, and had his mom move in to take care of the kids while he works. Oh, and she has to pay him child support for their 3 kids, and she only gets supervised visitations on the weekends, and her girlfriend can't be near the kids or she loses all rights to see them.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
Honestly, I only picked "who gives a fuck" 'cuz i'm not gonna get married until I can't get anyone else. That, or I find another girl like Hillary (which I'm sure means nothing to you but everything to me) who actually loves me for more than four months.
Hell, if I ever met another girl like her, I'd do everything in my power to subjugate her to my eternal, burning love.
But there's no one else like her, so marriage seems meaning and worthless.

Social Services know that their system has massive gaps though. We can only hope it will get better with time, but it probably won't. I think men come off alot worse, and they're always treated like the criminal and lose friends over it, while the women are seen as poor little creatures who must be built up to feel empowered or something. But it is 4am right now and I'll probably edit this in the afternoon...

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
men get the shit end of the stick most of the time, i pay 970 a month in child support, for one kid, and havent been able to see her for 4 years, but if i'm just a few days late with my payment, no matter the reason, i get calls from the state threating to take me to jail. its bullshit, and getting a attorney does no good, i've paid out so much to my attorney just trying to get my visitation that it makes me sick, its bad and i see no end in sight.

Either can get raped by it, but since women are usually the ones who initiate it, they're the ones who try to get what they feel they deserve from the guys.
There's the odd situation where the guy keeps a fair portion, but in almost every case i've seen, one of the partners, usually the guy, gets raped severely.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
Well, I voted a solid "yes", but I guess I really should not have participated at all. I have never paid any alimony or child support. We never had any offspring, but I am still sometimes surprised (amazed) that the court did not award her support for the one sickly yet surviving cat that we had at the time.
I was going to start off by asking how many of the posters or voters here have actually been through a divorce themselves (not just parents, friends or relatives). I have been married once and divorced once. And, for statistical purposes, those numbers will NEVER change! Then again, we were only married for 18 years, so maybe it doesn't really count. My parents were married for for over 60+ years and completley and totally UNhappy for the majority of that time.
For those of you who have not followed my varied and sordid posts on this, and related threads: yeah, I kept the house and some of the stuff inside, but it wiped all of my savings, my life insurance, and virtually all of my other assets. She walked away with nearly $0.5 M and I was left with most of our 'common' debt.
She actually tried to latch on to all my company's assests, while choosing to ignore any of its debts (it was, at the time insolvent, but with nearly another $3/4 M in assets, and over $1 M in debt, all she could see was the $750K in the asset column)
Marriage can be a wonderful and blissful thing for both man and woman alike.
PRENUP, PRENUP, PRENUP .!.!.!.!.
For boys and girls alike. Spend a few hundred bucks for a GOOD attorney to protect yourselves.
If any of this seems obscure or confusing.... read this entire post again, from top to bottom. And no, I am not myself, nor do I work for or represent any legal entities or interests.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
I would like to get married one day...But I won't.
Marriage is no longer about holy union...It can be easily gotten rid of by a little thing called divorce.
Marriage to me is just a piece of paper, a ring and some photos to basically say to the world "I LOVE THIS PERSON AND I ALWAYS WILL!!!" with possible financial suicide (nice term there Jack!)
Now I know there are pre-nuptual agreements to stop that shit happening but really...If you are getting pre-nup's, is it even worth marrying someone?! It's like saying "I love you and I want to spend my life with you but I don't trust you!"
I myself would much rather promise my girl that I'll always love, cherish, honour and respect her, through richer and poorer times, in sickness and in health until death do us part...Or until she gets bored and fucks off (without half my hard earned shit!)
Promises I won't break. And I don't need some holy man telling me the invisible man in the sky is watching and says it's alright now that I've promised in a church.
Men get screwed over by this shit...Especially when kids are concerned. The fucking CSA were still demanding money off of my old man when my sister turned 18! Cunts.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
It's really sick how many of you are against marriage just because of what you've heard.
YES, it's all true, there are evil, shitty, money grabbing bitches out there.
Which is why you take precautions before getting married! You've GOT to learn to protect yourself, regardless of how much you love someone.
To those of you who've been put off of marriage, please please dont be truly put off. Sure, dont marry someone after two weeks of knowing them. And deffinately, before you get married, go to a solicitor, a good one, and ensure your ass is covered!
Just as you wouldnt..shouldnt accept a drink from a stranger at a club, just as you wouldnt fuck a whore without a condom, just as you wouldnt buy an incredibly amazing and expensive car and drive it without insuring it to the nines, you shouldnt go into a marriage unprotected.
It's just basic fucking common sense!
Any way, it's allways a good idea to really know someone before getting married.
You know, if you only find out she's a money grabbing bitch after you've married her, then..you probably didnt wait long enough before marrying her.
Sure women can be lying bitches, but really, is any woman going to bother lying to trick a man into marrying her so she can get his money, if it involves her having to lie for years?
I do feel that people should date for atleast two years before marrying, maybe more. There's no way you can learn all you need to know about someone in less time than that.
The law is fucked, in regards to how the mother will most commonly get custody of the kids. You could solve this problem by of course, not having kids..
I totally agree, for the most part, when get ass fucked big time when it comes to divorce.
But if you're carefull, it doesent have to come to that!.
I know it's maybe not something you'd want to discuss early in a marriage, but seriously, you have to set boundaries, and discuss what could happen, who'd get what
For example, if you have a shared property you have to agree on what would happen to it. Both leave and sell? Both stay? I dont give a fuck, but sort it out!
As a side note, please dont think it's allways the men who get fucked by splitups.
I'm a daughter of a woman who at 49 or so had to start totally again from nothing with a new mortgage and new house.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
The problem is that a lot of couples go into it with the 'we'll never divorce, we'll always love each other/etc.' attitude, and to think of a pre-nup or anything like that is see as bringing doubt and bringing on failure. Though really, it's the most logical thing you can do. Most don't think of divorcing, so this stuff never comes into play until it's too late, which leaves BOTH partners equally open for financial/legal rape, though it's seen more commonly with women.
Hell, the few times my ex did talk about marriage, I did say that whenever I get married, I'm shooting for a pre-nup/etc., or no dice. Upon finding out what that paperwork was, she wasn't too happy about it, but hey. :\
I think she saw it as disrespectful/distrusting of her. She did say 'but I wouldn't do that to you' "no, not right now, but you don't know how things could end up, that would be just playing it smart/safe". Her parents are divorced, and her mom did take the house/both cars/child support for 2 kids, except she did a lot of drugs and drank it away, and she can't find a cheap enough lawyer willing to drag more money out of her ex-husband because she just spent it like that.
"Honey, will you marry me? I love you unconditionally, but, um, can we sign something to make sure your not some money hungry whore like my mother was, so yeah, i'm afraid you'll steal my money"
Shut the heck up.
WTF are you on about, that's exactly it, but you obviously phrase it better. You can agree/work out the details after, but that's the idea, yes, and it works both ways, as a matter of fact.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
Especially in places like my state (we're gun-totting, drunken, ignorant and Christian), hell yeah men get screwed over. When my parents divorced though, they kinduh ended things on good terms, and mom didn't ask for many assets, just child support. My dad got us every other weekend (they lived 45 minutes from each other). Dad didn't really care how often he got to see us, so long as it was at least for a few days every month.
Then when my dad moved down here and my mom moved 1.5 hours from here, the custody situation switched and dad had us most of the time.. mom was SUPPOSED to come get us every other weekend, but she wasn't really interested in spending time with us so we ended up only seeing her when she wanted to visit her friends. Oh, and the child support price stayed the same. Once dad took us, mom had to pay him the same amount he was previously paying her.
But there are PLENTY of stories of fathers getting fucking SCREWED in my state, and if my mom was more of a bitch than she is, my dad (making $52,000ish USD a year) would be living a lower-middle class life.

Resistance to the idea of a pre-nup is regarded as one of the main signs a woman is planning on pulling some shit with you. That's what they're really for. They provide little defense in a divorce fight, but bringing up one and gauging her reaction is a great way to figure out her intentions.
Remember, everything woman does is for HER benefit, somehow.

Great fuckin post Yoyo.....PLUS MUTHA FUCKIN ONE THOUSAND! 1000+
I'd just like to add a few things. First off, if you are thinking about marriage, do NOT get into nuptials into you've lived with them first. This is the most important life decision you'll probably ever make, you need to make that decision with both eyes WIDE open. There are literally thousands of little nuances you don't see or understand about your partner when you are just dating them, and no an over-night stay doesn't count. Do yourself and your partner a favor and "test drive" the whole marriage thing first by co-habitating THEN discussing marriage. Its the only sensical thing to do.
In regard to a pre-nup, I think many people are blowing it way out of proportion on this thread. The reason being is the true PURPOSE to a pre-nup would only apply to a small handful of you. You are trying to insure/protect whatever money or valuables you have BEFORE getting married.Whatever you obtained after the marriage SHOULD be split in a fair manner.....because it was BOTH of your work in that marriage that got you those things to begin with. The point is, most folks getting married don't have that much. Unless you are a millionaire, getting married later in life (having an already established career or significant possessions).....then a pre-nup is pointless. So why even bring up or feel the need to have a pre-nup, unless you legitimately HAVE something to "lose" from the get go? Don't let silly empty rhetoric create drama in a relationship that is stable, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Careful there. Your average family has the husband as the main or sole supporter. So what he paid for and bought is suddenly not his, why?

That doesn't fucking work. Theres no way to pull it off, no matter how delicate or suave you are.
Which Is why again, I believe prenuptials should be a standard issue in the marriage papers. Just as I believe paternity tests should be standard issues in the hospitals.
Two things a guy should never be put in the situation to bring up. It should just be automatic.

So true. I remember my mom saying before my parents got divorced "prenups are for people who don't really love eachother".

My mum actually showed some class when my parents split. according to their prenup she was entitled to a certain amount. She waved the prenup and took substantially less. My dad bought out her share of the family home and my brother and I would swap between parents every two weeks. They didn't live more than 10 minutes drive from each other until my brother and I had finished high school, at which point my mum moved~1500km.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
My parents, I think, had always been thinking about seperation/divorce, but never went through with it. But when my mom wanted to go back to school they legally split, because since she had become a single parent with three children she was entitled to significantly more financial aid for school. My parents still kind of act like they're married, though. My dad comes over for dinner a lot and once in a while sleeps over. It's kind of awkward and weird but it works for everyone.

First, I refute what you described as being "average". At least in the USA. The one income homes where just daddy goes to work is in the great minority. The days of the Cleaver family are long gone.
But just to play along and do the math....lets really examine what happy homemaker wifey-poo is "doing" all day. How much is a cleaning service? Laundry care? Child Care? Chef? Chauffeur? Can you even put a price on the "emotional" tone she sets for the household? All the organizing, preparing of shit like parties and bbq's? What's the value on that steady piece of ass?
Roll all of that into one, and I don't care if she has never worked even one day at a formal "job" per se.....she has done/brought just as much to sustain that marriage as the husband toiling away in whatever industry.
My only hope is that each and every one of you guys reading this can find yourself in such a fortunate situation as to be able to have such a wife. Cuz if you don't have Mrs. Cleaver, then she is gonna be working too......and then YOU'LL have to share in your share of all the shit listed above. That boys is REALITY.........

I really think all forms of 'pre-nups' are wrong and are infact another nail in the coffin of the institute of marriage.
It should be clear to everyone who is considering marriage that you will lose 50 % of whatever you bring into the marriage and you will lose 50% of whatever has been accrued during the marriage.
Don't matter none if your Bill Gates or some trailer park alki.
The only exception should be in the case of adultery. The cheater should get jack-shit.
Which used to be the law most places.

Already am married, and am not condoning ANYONE ever receiving someone else's everything. As I said above, a FAIR split up and not necessarily exactly 50/50....but fair nonetheless. Nobody should get fucked or raked over the coals.
I've managed to create a situation where if my wife and I ever did divorce I know with 100% certainty she would not fuck me. Not because she is such a wonderful gal (which she is).... but because she knows me too well. I'm a crazy son of a bitch. I don't give a fuck about laws or normal societal restraints. If she ever tried to keep me from my son....she knows damn well their ain't a restraining order written or a jail time long enough to keep me away. She wanna play wench and fuck with my custody, I'd leave the country with him in tow if I had to. Wanna take too much out of my income? Ways around that too.....I hustled and dealed my way around life in my younger years, I'd like to believe that time has only made me wiser and better. As much as she loves me, she has seen too much of me over the years and she knows not to become my enemy. This is one hubby that would NOT be raked over the coals.
But fuck all that, we are living happily ever after......... :)

I wouldn't pay my wife for sex or consider it, far as I'm concerned, she gets something from it too, if you'd wanna look at it like that.
Fact is, in most families, the male is the MAIN breadwinner still, but I've NEVER personally heard of it being split according to income, in a divorce.
I'd be perfectly happy to end up with a wife like yours, i hope I do someday, you do seem quite content.
Thing is the law doesn't look at that, and material goods/$ get split. Cleaning and cooking services haven't been considered by any divorcing/ed couples I've seen, at least it's paled in comparison to your house or cars being taken away, leaving you with next to nothing.
That EITHER couple can get screwed so badly shows massive flaws in the system, that aren't close to being addressed without very, very, very careful planning, or very good lawyers. How or why it got like this, I don't know, but it's what turns me off of marrying without fully researching and essentially arming myself, for it to come out nearly fair. Hell, I'd encourage my spouse to do the same.
People who divorce generally aren't on the best of terms, and don't with the best for the other person, or care much. That sort of logic doesn't really work, that I've ever seen, if one partner decides that they suddenly deserve that much more for what they put into it, or that the other person deserves less.

Which used to be the law most places.
Marriages aren't being taken seriously anyways, because so many people jump into it too quickly. Then once the infatuation and the honeymoon phase wear off, they get divorced. I think that pre-nups are good for getting peoples' heads out of their asses and making them think twice about getting married. If most women were about to marry a guy and he asked for a pre-nup, that would raise a red flag for the women, who would most likely assume that the guy was accusing her of being a gold-digger by asking for one and refuse to get one. The guy would then think that the woman was indeed a gold-digger for refusing, and they wouldn't get married. That's one less marriage that ends in a nasty divorce.
If I get divorced, why should I have to share what I had before the marriage? My husband didn't help me get any of that stuff, so why should he get half of it? What if I've been saving up to buy a house, and I have $20,000 in the bank for that sole purpose, while my husband can't save money to save his life? Why should he get $10,000 of my money, that I worked for, and sacrificed to save? Or what if I inherited a million dollars from a relative, either before or after the marriage? Why should my ex-husband get half of that?
As much as I used to disagree with the idea of women just sitting around the house all day while the husband works his ass off, after seeing the way things worked in my ex-boyfriend's household, I can understand why people do it. When they first got married, both of his parents worked, because they were poor and didn't have a choice. His mom used to pick fruits while he was a baby, and she would bring him to work with her. Then his dad got a good job, so his mom quit working. She took care of everything around the house, and he worked. She does all of the laundry, the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping, everything. My ex-boyfriend and his brother don't even have to put their dishes in the sink when they're done, they can just leave them on the table and their mom will pick them up and wash them. They have to do all of the maintenance on the house, though, like mowing the lawn, trimming the trees, and painting the house, so I guess it evens out in the end.
Anyways, my point is, the way they see it is that the man is supposed to support his family. That's his job. The woman's job is to take care of the family. The money that the man brings home goes immediately towards bills, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, and other neccessities. Then a portion of it goes towards their retirement fund. Whatever is left over goes into the bank. If the woman wants spending money, she can go out and get a job. Otherwise, she and her husband both have access to whatever money is leftover after all of the bills are paid. I think that's a fair arrangement, although I could never see myself doing that. I would feel worthless if I wasn't working and bringing in money.

That's messed up. It's not wrong to be carefull and cover yourself before jumping into a serious commitment.
I dont get, I really really dont get how a woman can expect anything from a man after they break up. If you break up with someone it's because you dont want anything to do with them anymore, so why the fuck would you want his money?
I figure that's what is mine is mine. What my boyfriend owns is his. I'd have to be retarded to suddenly think that his computer or his possessions were suddenly mine.
After getting married, why should the rules change?
If HE buys something with HIS money, why should she be entitled to any of it, and likewise, if SHE buys something with HER money, why should he be entitled to it?

This.
That kind of mentality pretty much guarantees you'll be after every penny you can get. Then again, since you've apparently never worked in your life, you don't have much choice but to take his money.

In the near future when men stop marrying, marriage laws will change, else the billion dollar diamond industry will nearly collapse among others, perhaps even gold. Imagine gold decreasing in value, and how many countries and people who have stockpiled gold that would be screwed over. Luckily it won't happen.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
I haven't read the thread, but I want to give a real life example. I work for a law firm, and today I was working on some divorce paperwork. Anyway, the wife filed to divorce her husband. The guy was ordered to pay $920 a month in child support in the temporary order. This was superseded by the final order where he is ordered to pay $808 a month in child support. The temporary order basically works for a while until the final paperwork is done. Anyway, after the temporary order was filed he was having money garnished from his wages automatically, but they can only take up to a certain percent of what you make. This guy makes $21 an hour, and he was paying $520 a month. So anyway, I was doing the paperwork today and it all adds up to him owing $2120 in back child support as of now, in addition to having to pay $808 a month in child support as of Wednesday. He pays all of this for their one child. The guy works as a factory worker basically, working with metal, and he has to support himself and pay out $808 a month. Yeah....that sucks.
I didn't look at the properly division, but fuck.......the firm I work for does work for really poor people, we get grants and stuff to do it. Needless to say I felt really bad for the guy based on the numbers. Just remember to be careful who you marry.

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
I've seen many men get raped by the system. My uncle's ex wife became a heroin addict in which she used to child support to keep up her habbit. The judge said in court "A heroin addictied mother is as good as any other" and would not give full custody to the father / grandparents for many years.
The main thing i hear women use to get money from divorce is saying that they could of had a job for the past years of being married and hence the husband has to pay what could have been.

That is such bullshit, I can't believe it's gotten to this point. What she COULD have made? Bitch, nobody forced you to get married!
Men of Totse, DON'T GET SUCKERED IN! By anybody! I don't care how nice and trustworthy she seems to be, I don't care how good in bed she is, don't fucking get married to anybody!

Re: Do Men Get A Raw Deal When It comes to Alimony/Custody?
The only exception should be in the case of adultery. The cheater should get jack-shit.
Which used to be the law most places.
Thanks a LOT for that little bit of 'wisdom' you asswhole. I suggest that at some point you get off of your high horse and accept reality instead of your nazi assumptions about the way the world would have been if the other side had won WW2.
Great thread... except that equal weight has been given to those who have actually been through the divorce procedure as those who have had friends, relatives, even parents, heard stories, read books, or even part of an article in a gossip column about the realities of divorce.
But I digress... There is a HUGE diffence btween stautory law and case law. In my state, it has less to do with who is "at fault" because this is a "no fault" state. The only recongnized cause for divorce is, in essence, irroconcilable differences. In legal terms, a union that is irreperaply damaged. According to the legistlative terms, in such cases each spouse is entitled to a proportionate share of both what they broght into the union as well as an equally proportionate share of what they contributed to the common existance.
Makes sense to me...
But case law says: Nooooo.... she gets half of everythig. (not exactly, but close enough) Never mind if needs to burried in that 'Y' shaped box; doesn't matter how many violins she has played, no cares about who has ridden her well-ridden bycicle.
She still gets half of your shit.
So, jack... please take your "what it should be" crap and just stuff it up your ass until you are elevated from Mod of S&A and become god of the world (read: USA) and change the divorce laws here to conform to your ideals.

How in the fuck did you manage to take anything written in this thread and turn it into some nationalistic chest thumping nonsense? You shoulda just jacked off to a Bruce Springsteen album, and used Old Glory as your jism rag to clean up the mess. Wouldn't that have left you a lot more fulfilled then that rant above?
