There are plenty of theories to suggest that a similar motivation can be found in, at least, the Christian conception of hell: to be banished from the presence of the one you love, and who truly loves you...

To be true, the new year hasn't begun; at least not the one that Jesus' family most likely celebrated. The pagan new year doesn't start until...I believe April, with the spring. Which makes a hell of a lot more sense considering all of the lively rebirth in plantlife and weather around at the time. Call me crazy, but gray skies, blistering wind, debilitating snow....they just don't scream rejuvenation to me.
