Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
A question to everyone here,
If your boyfriend/girlfriend of several months spent £100 on you on your birthday (That's around $56 ?) would you think that was a large amount or a pathetically tiny amount?
Does it vary depending on how long you've been dating?
And a question to the guys (well girls can answer too), if your birthday was just after christmas and you'd been pretty much lvld your presentyness to the max, what sort of things would you want, assuming you were sick and fucking fed up of the christmas season and all the gifts associated with?
I think parents should be banned from having children that will be birthed at around the festive season.
Buying christmas presents and then birthday presents is financially very hard.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
Having kids around the holidays is fucking awesome, you only have to buy one round of presents!
As for the original question, I'd be impressed with $50 worth of gifts. Between you and me, I'd be happy with dinner, anal, and a copy of World War Z.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
I don't care how much my girl spends on me. As long as it's a gift she's thought about and believes I would like, that's all that matters.
It could cost a quid...Could cost a monkey...Don't care as long as it's been thought about.
If my birthday fell just after crimbo, I wouldn't want anything.
Go grab a bottle of vodka and come spend some time drinking with me. Sorted.

If I remember correctly, one hundred British pounds will be around two hundred American dollars.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
If someone spent £100 on me for my birthday I would flip and probably thank them profusely and keep saying 'really, you shouldn't have!"
I don't think you have to spend anything to give a good gift. Although I feel like a tard because for my boyfriend's birthday in October I gave him a picture I made on photoshop that took me at least 6 hours to make. But it's still just a picture. My birthday was two weeks ago. He gave me a new iPod Nano. :)/:(

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
Hmm. . . well 100 pounds is around 200 U.S dollars, so I'd think that's pretty expensive for a gift.
I would appreciate it immensely, and feel bad at the same time because I wouldn't be able to get something of the same luxury.
Eh heh, a part of me would be tempted to ask why such an expensive gift though. >.< Sorry for the negativity. I'm just paranoid.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
Several months?
I'd say that it's fairly expensive for a birthday gift right after Christmas, unless only smaller gifts were given for Christmas.
It all depends on the person and their tastes. Some people want for expensive things and others want for smaller things.
You have to be your own judge on this sort of thing. If you want to give something, then give it.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
I'd say about $200 is damn expensive, actually.
And the longer you've been together, generally the more stable it is, so the more accepted and common it is to spend more. I personally wouldn't spend that much on someone I haven't been with for longer than a few months, though I'd be floored if someone did, that's a very decent amount of money, at least to me.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
Thankyou all so much for the helpfull responses. It's eased my mind somewhat that £100 worth of stuff wont be so bad.
Between you and me, I'd be happy with dinner, anal, and a copy of World War Z.
Oh fuck yes. I've been trying to find a copy of that book everywhere, to go onto Play.com and find within 10 seconds!
Okay that's £10 down, 90 to go.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
56 is a pretty fair amount. It's not a lot. But it's not insulting either.
For my last birthday, my ex took me out for sushi, drinks, and gave me a suture set and some scalpels that she picked up from work. We didn't even have sex, due to outside factors. But it was great.

I agree with dude man here, although I don't have the slightest idea how much a quid is. But another man's garbage would be my treasure if it actually showed that she really put thought into it. Not literally garbage, obviously, but I just mean like, something worthless but priceless in terms of sentimental value.
The last such present I gave may not have ended up costing me more than $40 american altogether, but it took me 6 months to find the perfect things. I suppose I'd be impressed that someone was willing to spend that much money for a gift to me, as long as it was a gift that actually meant something more than monetary value. Ya dig?

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
For several months I'd say £100 was a little on the high side, but it's all relative to what you earn I suppose and the fact that one hundred of her Majesty's quids don't go very far these days. Having a birthday so soon after Christmas I expect the person is used to getting a 'big' present on one day or the other but not both, from the same person at least.
psycho_8b nailed it though, when it comes to boy/girlfriends that haven't been dating for ages it's all in the thought. Buy him something he wants, needs or will just find fun and the price doesn't really matter.
Tie it in with drink and sex and I guarantee 99% of blokes would be happy with that. Hell, just the drink or the sex would get you bonus points.

Re: Avoding stingyness or extravegance.
for my bitch:
last christmas: IPOD video 80gb, shopping trip, nintendo DS.
birthday: book, night out.
valentines day: necklace, lingerie, shopping trip.
this christmas: shopping, clothes
+she lives with me, she is totally financially reliant on me.
giving expensive gifts is a massive ego trip for me, it's more of a treat for me than it is for her.
