Convincing my parents
Hello. First thread in S&A.
In case you don't know, there is a TOTSE meetup in Brisbane on Jan 5. Brisbane is around 600km away and I really want to go. Problem is - how do I ask my parents? I am only 15 and my parents aren't really the types to let a 15 year old just fly 600km to meet randoms off the internet.
So what's the go TOTSE? I see two main solutions:
1. Tell them the whole truth - show them totse, and let them talk to my totsean friends over the phone and msn to see that they aren't, in fact a bunch of pedos.
2. BS my way through it. I have organised a Whirlpool (Aussie forum that doesn't allow swearing and personal attacks on there) meetup on the exact same day: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=872591
The Whirlpool meetup would be pitched to my parents as good, clean intellectual fun.
Ideas and feedback please, I really don't want to miss it, as it will be epic. I have recently gotten a job and such, so I am on pretty good terms with my parents at the moment.

There's the catch....right there.
But yeah, tell the truth. They'll say 'no' but you'll just have to wait til you 18. Sorry :(
Don't lie, you'll fuck up and then you'll be grounded til you're old and grey.

Because it concerns kids/parents which falls into our remit. We take 'Affection' to cover the whole spectrum of human relationships.

Mega-fail. I will give the truth a shot when I wake up tomorrow - hopefully they will be cool about it.

School is out over here, my main man. :). Because I was hoping for to get a technique to help get my point across. My social skills are absolute shit.

Maybe I'm just a lousy parent but if any of my kids (the youngest is 16) came to me said 'Dad, I want to go to a drunken orgy of a News Year's party' I would have simply said (and often did) "make sure you use a condom".
Although I would have also insisted on knowing exactly where and who was hosting the party.
Also there was/is a rule about drugs.
Just tell your parents the almost truth, something like "Dad, Josh's parents are away over New Years and they said he could have some friends over for some beers and dvds. Ok if I go?"
Thats assuming your dad isn't totally anti-alcohol. Dads will respect semi-honesty . The "Oh no Dad, of course there won't be any alcohol. PERISH the thought!" kind of line won't fool him for a second cos he was 16 once too.

Wow, my parents were pretty relaxed when it came to New Years.
It followed;
Me:"Hey, can I go to xxxxxxx for New Years?"
Mom:"Will there be drinking?"
Me:"Yeah"
Mom:"Don't drive once you get there, okay?"
Me:"Okay"

Re: Convincing my parents
The dad o mine is VERY anti-alcohol.
And very anti-me being out of the house.
Once my cellphone battery died and he called all my exgirlfriend and every guitar shop in town. It had been out 1hour.
I think the semi-truth is good. Also if I come prepared with the adress and phone number and names and whatnot, then I seem responsible and prepared right?
Or I could tell him Im sleeping at another friend's house, who has parents home and who he knows.

Maybe you should convince your parents to give you some more freedom. Just talk with them and be sort of honest and dont yell or argue, just have a good conversation.

Haha I was in the same boat until last year.
Treat it like any other day-- Mom, I'm going to a friends house! Listen to her talk "There's gonna be drunk drivers on the road, it's gonna be late!" Then respond with "I'll be at the house all night." Then she'll probably say something like "Don't drink any wine, because you're not 21!" Then listen to some more paranoid stuff, and you're off. Maybe go to your friends house for a minute, so you don't feel bad for lying, then go get smashed!
Only problem is, I got a Happy New Years call at 12, from her and my grandma! I was like FUCK! And ran out of the hotel room up to the top floor to call back, I was drunk, high and on Xanax but somehow I succeeded. Then I went to Dennys and spent 15$ somehow? I think I left a big tip. Point is, just treat it like any other time you wanna chill with friends, so she doesn't know you're conspiring for big NEW YEARS plans.
EDIT:
My mom doesn't care anymore though, from January 1st-now I have been caught numerous times. You could also try that approach, let them know you're gonna do what you're gonna do, but you'll be careful and responsible. And the best part is, no more lying! Well, still some lying. But for the most part you're good.

Re: Convincing my parents
It might be a good idea to think about why your parents may not want you, at age 16, going to a 'proper' party.
You see, they were 16 when I was 16 (very likely at least). They went to parties in the 80's.
Parties were, as far as I can tell, very different back then. In those pre-AIDS awareness days parties were often *cough* interesting *cough* and the ones I went to would have made Caligua blush.

I've heard the same from a friend of mine who went to high school in the 80's.

Re: Convincing my parents
Dude, you have no chance! You live in the middle of nowhere, Australia, and you probably aint too clued up about cities... no offence man, but wait a while, eh? You're not even 16... you can't drink/vote/smoke/drive(?)/fuck... and yet you're expecting your parents to let you fly to some random city to "see friends" they've never met?
Yeh man, totse spirit and all that, and if you were well clued up and bullshitted your parents and had plans (and backup plans...) worked out for Brisbane, then yeh i'd be thinkin' you could "maybe" do it. Fact is, you can't dude! Focus on meeting some people nearer where you live, even if it seems boring as shit.
Totse, or similar sites/people will be around when you're older. Right now, i'd advise you to wait, and not spin out an elaborate yarn to the 'rents which may well go tits-up and get you in some major shit with them!
I'm going travelling pretty much alone in a few months time, and I've booked flights... in some ways, i'm scared shitless and fucking amazingly excited, but I know I can deal with it..... got relatives out in Aus. Not sure if I could have got ANYWHERE at 15 though... a few years makes a big difference! :)
Sorry if this aint really what you wanted to hear..

Ey man. Sounds like your fucked, I'd try bullshitting, maybe say your going to go camping? If you have average parents forget about the truth, you have to make something up, say your friend is doing something for his army cadets or scouts and you're allowed to go. Just say you'll be back in 4 or 5 days but then say the trip was actually 7 days. I don't know man.

Re: Convincing my parents
Ah man, this is making me feel old, and I'm only 21.
Number one: where's the meeting? Clearly it should be in a pub, and you're 15... wait, almost eveyone on here is 15...
Number two: how the hell did you hear about this meeting? Is there some meeting button somewhere I haven't seen?
Number three: it must suck to be bean. Consider that the idiot talks in third person as well.
OK, there was nothing constructive there. Just suck it up and wait till your older. Tell you what, wait till your at least 17, then come down to Melbourne and will get you drugged up good. And maybe a fake ID if you look like you're still 15. Organise a Melbourne meeting when you're old enough to piss off alone.

Either taking the totse party bus or flying with ibetyouvotenexttimehippy. Parents said I could go, but they need to figure a way out to get me there.

There's a reason why I don't usually venture into SG, and I was just reminded why.
You guys decided to have it in a Hungary Jacks? Ah c'mon... no, wait, 15 year olds. Shit, half of you will get the Happy Meal equivilent.
Anyway, I'll be in the land of the long white cloud. As retarded as it seems, I'd actually show up if I was in the country. Despite the fact that it's about 1700km away.
If someone organises one in Melbourne during or after Feb then I'll rock up.

Right... then run off and tell your parents how hardcore you are. In the third person of course. Tell them that you're a man now, and you'll go to whatever fucking party you want to go to. Except you're 16, and they'll send you off to your room. I'd rather eat my own children then refer to myself as bean, in the third person to boot. You can get a capital when you stop being a little bitch. And no, your prepubescent attempts at trying to make yourself sound hard don't work. Don't worry though, you'll grow out of being a little shit.

All i used to say was
Me: Mum, i'm going to xxxxxxxx for new years with the boys, be back sometime in the next few days.
Mum: Righto, have fun.
But then again i have a pretty lax mum, i'd go missing for 3-5 days without saying anything, or show up with goodies i got from friends...
Me: Hey mum look what i scored! *Presents explosives*
Mum: Great, does this mean my windows are going to shake again and the cops will rock up?
Me: um.....maybe.....
