Feeling a bit of paternalistic instinct, but no mate.
Strangely, I've been experiencing more and more the desire to start a family. I don't really know why (that's why I chalked it up to instinct). I've always been single and always been fine with being single. But lately I've felt like a kid wouldn't be so bad. It seems the natural thing for young guys nowadays is to be scared to death of having a kid. The fucked up thing is that I'm only 22 and it doesn't seem that scary to me anymore. I'm making more than enough money to support a family. And as far as actually knowing how run a family, I'm pretty sure that's something every man has to learn as they go along.
The biggest problem is in finding a mate. I have no desire to treat a girl as a "baby factory" or something. Realistically I'd rather have no more than 2 kids (3 at the absolute most). But a girl close to my age, with similar interests to my own, who is neither fugly or mentally insane, who looks forward to the whole family thing too, is impossible to find. Am I going to have to be alone until I'm 30 for women to start looking for guys like me? Am I being a complete dumbass? I can always count on fellow totseans to be brutally honest with me. Is there any hope for me? Furthermore, do anything other guys here have the slightest idea what I'm talking about? :( :p

I know how you feel. I was a father for a little over a year and it was the most intense experience of my life. I'm still heartbroken.

Re: Feeling a bit of paternalistic instinct, but no mate.
Welcome to Adulthood.
This one of the reasons why we oldies tend to snigger when 'kids' say "but I NEVER want children".
Biology is a powerful force and like it or not the urge to procreate is hardwired into all of us.
I mean, almost every 17 male would get himself sterilised if he could. And everyone of them would be CERTAIN he was never going to want kids.
This is why its almost impossible to get a vascetomy til you're 30+.
Even with 3 kids, and a mentally ill wife who physically wouldn't survive another pregnancy ,already I had to fight.
So no nothing strange about your feelings. If its meant to be then you'll meet the right woman.

Re: Feeling a bit of paternalistic instinct, but no mate.
DON'T DO IT!
BABIES CRY ALL THE TIME!
Now, My girlfriend and I have recently become parents. We love our little girl, and wouldn't change anything, but she cries all fucking night and most of the day.
Cries... feed her... cries... change her... cries... wind her... cries... ? cries... ? screams... ?
She spends as much time crying as she does sleeping, and obviously we have other stuff to do so basically we get to sleep from she settles in the early hours of the morning until 3 hours later when she needs fed again.
It's hard to cope with. Not all babies have colic, but something like 20% do... thats a lot.
Enjoy your youth, have children when it happens, don't plan shit.

LOL
Yes,the joys of parenthood.
Anyway take a tip from a man whose been there more than once.
Put a tape deck/cd player in her room .Heavy metal music works best. Shut the door and ignore her.
All my kids have slept through almost from the first few weeks.
I'm told the bass beat soothes them.
No I'm not joking.
MOst important of all, do NOT let your wife pick her up everytime she cries.
Its natural for amother, especially for a young inexperienced mother to do it but stop her.
Remember its when they DON't cry you need to worry. If she's screaming the house down then she's breathing fine.

Are you saying you can't get to sleep with the soothing sound of Napalm Death playing in the background?

Get a pet or two.
I figure if you can look after a pet for a year or two without accidentally killing it/intentionaly killing it when it gets annoying, you'd probably be a good parent.
Or atleast you'd find out if caring for something that's going to need you alot is something you enjoy, or can deal with,or dont absolutely hate.
I've 10...11 guinea pigs now, and I've realised that if I was caring for a creature that wasnt fuzzy and funny and great fun, and also something that I couldnt ignore for a few hours if it got annoying...I'd be a terrible parent.
First step of breeding, find a good mate you can actually tolerate!
EDIT: Going along the music route, Barry White is good, as is some good heavy Drum and Base, but if you go that way, AVOID roni size like the plague! That cocksucker gets every dog in the neighbourhood howling, let alone every baby.

I'm 17 and my crazy ass (bless her soul) 14 year old girlfriend wants to have a baby RIGHT NOW.
You can find someone you just have to look in the right places. :)

What 14 year old in her right mind wants a kid? Is this your girlfriend? If not, has she ever been on Maury?

She just thinks that babies are cute. :) I think that it's wonderful that she wants a kid because I know that if we somehow ever got pregnant (we use protection every time) that she wouldn't flip shit and get an abortion or something stupid. I've told her that it can wait like 5 or 6 years haha :)

Re: Feeling a bit of paternalistic instinct, but no mate.
I'm the same age as you...And I get that paternal pang every so often.
I don't want kids right now but I know one day I will.
It's just hard to envision changing my life now to one where I'm working harder for a woman and a kid or two...Like "Why the fuck would I want to do that?!"

Puppies are cute. Get her a puppy. Seriously, that's just fucking stupid. Please, please, please do not get her pregnant. I don't want to have to support her if she gets pregnant and ends up on welfare like 90% of teenage mothers.

Re: Feeling a bit of paternalistic instinct, but no mate.
This is completely redundant as I am a girl but sometimes my desire to have a baby drives me stir crazy! In my head I know I need to wait for about eight more years or something at least, but the feelings are immense. I care for babies and young children almost every day and some part of me feels like its the best job in the world...*wails*
and just longing to hold my goddaughter again...the comfort you can give a child when they feel like its all the worst thing ever, nursing them back to being calm, have them sleep in your arms, knowing they trust you
my instincts are going to eat me. It's almost a physical feeling, I can't describe it

Kids are great.
Finding a woman that would be a good mother is another story.
