Default Maintaining a Long Distance Relationship?

Has anyone ever been in one before? If so, what are some good tips to help keep it going. Me and her talk to each other everyday by MSN (incl. voice chat) and texting, and we are meeting up during the holidays.

I'm sorry to say my friend, they don't work, however hard you try, unless you're seeing each other every weekend, it ain't gonna work.

Good luck however.

thats not true. at all.

theres a good chance it wont work, especially if you dont have a base to start from where you lived near eachother and dated normally. but if you guys really like eachother its do-able...

ive kept mine going for the past year and a half now.

as for talking everyday?...ehh dont know where to help you there, i talk to my girlfriend every 3 days, saves "busy chat" and really im not the type of person that wants/needs to talk to his girl everyday.

its hard though. my best advice for you is to keep things varied. call her at unexpected times, throw her texts sparatically and try to change things up.

and when you see her for the little time you do, make it fucking perfect. otherwise, dont invest huge amounts of emotion into this because the odds are against you, but if you can see her around once every month youve got a good chance.

It actually can work if you're both willing to go through with it. It takes effort and patience.
I'm in a long distance relationship right now, i've been with this guy for 9 months. It took a lot of work to get where we are now. Talking to each other every single day, visiting each other every month. We're together knowing that we will end up together in the future, i'm moving to his state to attend a photography institute next year. Luckily for me the school I want to go to is next to where he lives. If I wasn't sure I was going to move near him sometime soon in the future, I would have never gotten involved with him.
Theres a lot of trust issues or loneliness that comes with being in a long distance relationship. If you can handle those, i'm sure you will be fine. Make sure you are able to see each other constantly to be able to maintain a healthy relationship.

My bestfriend is getting married to a girl he's been with for 4 years now. And they've only seen each other like 5 times in the past 15 months. Shes been in PA this whole time while he's gone to boot in chicago, A and C School in Virginia, and while he's been stationed here in Tampa.

And there's a happy ending to this story! They're getting married December 29th and shes moving down here.

So my point is, is that it is possible.

I've tried before and it doesn't work out to well
You'll never know if some other guy comes along because you only talk to her online
Before you know some other guy comes and she likes him too

And also it's just hard to pick up on things too

Wouldn't suggest but hey if thats your thing then go for it

The moral of this thread is that your mileage will vary. In all likelihood, it will not work out. There is some small percentage that it may. I don't know what the formula for making it work is, but I suspect it's the same as a short-distance-relationship. If the two of you work well together and are both willing to work to stay together then it could work. Otherwise it would be just as likely to fail as if you saw each other every day.

There is some truth in the statement "long distance relationships don't work".

I was in one for two years, a year and a half of that time successfully. The first half year was very, very unsuccessful, every time we argued we'd end up not talking for days, and ignoring the problem/holding grudges about it. There were some major fights, too, our biggest lasted THREE MONTHS and a large portion of the time we didn't even talk.

To be perfectly honest, if it weren't for some exteremely improbable events involving a pack of hormonal mexicans, a hopeless drug addict, and his own relationship problems, we wouldn't have ended up together after that fight. But that's a different story, and this post is already going to be long enough.

Now, down to the point. It's obvious that no two relationships are the same, so no one piece of advice will work 100% of the time. That being said, there are three things i observed about my relationship with my girlfriend, and i consider them key to the success of our relationship.

The first thing - probably the best thing to remember, if you only had to remember one. learning how to make up. since you can't just get together after a fight and angrily fuck eachother until you both feel better, you and your partner need to figure out how to make up after a fight. The key here is NOT ignoring the problem and moving on, doing so will ruin your relationship faster than a horny teenager's first attempt at sex. For this to work, you need to be able to sit down for a few hours together on the phone and talk about what caused the problem, how you both think it should be dealt with, and then you compromise and move on. This is best done AFTER you've both finished yelling at eachother, if one of both of you is pissed this won't work. be objective about it at first. most of all - COMMUNICATE!.

The second thing - Like i said at the beginning - there is some truth behind the statement "long distance relationships don't work". that truth is that they don't work forever. no matter how compatible you are, no matter how little you fight, or how well/quickly you make up, a long distance relationship is stressful stuff. While it's a great way to develop the emotional connection between you, the physical connection is just as important. In other words - you need to actually spend time together. Maybe just a week or two out of the whole year, but it needs to happen. Yeah, parting sucks, if you're serious about your relationship, watching them walk away in the airport (or having to do it yourself) may be the one of the hardest, most painful things you'll ever do. Or maybe you'll just be chill about it and it won't matter. Either way, it's not an excuse to avoid physically spending time together. Neither is age, money, or any of that shit. If you still live with your parents, don't try to do this behind their back (if you're serious about the relationship). most parents, no matter how bad it seems they will react, will be much more willing to work with you out if you're open and (at least somewhat) honest about your distance thing. Whatever happens, try your hardest to find a way to spend some time together at some point.

Now... being able to see eachother every now and then will help to prolong the life of your long distance relationship, and strengthen the bond between you and your partner, but you're not in the clear yet. my second piece of advice has two parts, and this second part may be the most vital it yet.

EVERY long distance relationship ends in one of three ways.

1. One (or both) of the people in the relationship move, so they can actually be together.

2. You break up, and the relationship ends.

3. One (or both) of the people in the relationship DIE of old age/huffing raid.

How many people do you know that died of old age and were in a long distance relationship? not many? thought so. So chances are, your long distance relationship will end either the first way or the second. Most end the second. Just know that there is no work around here... eventually, someone has to move if you want the relationship to work.

The third thing - Ah... almost done. now - both people in the relationship need to be equally willing to sacrifice things that are important to them and must take things equally seriously for it to work out IN THE END. If you both aren't ready to forsake all worldly possessions and journey across the world to be together, that's fine. it doesn't mean that your relationship isn't going to work out, or that it's not working out already. All i mean here is that eventually, both of you must be willing to make eachother (and hence, your relationship) top priority in your lives.

So that's it, really. This isn't a surefire recipe for success, it is perfectly possible for a relationship to be lacking one or more of my points and still "work out". Likewise, it's also possible that if it has all three, it won't work. (although, if all three of these things are true of your relationship, i'd say it cuts those chances down drastically). All i'm saying - These things helped my girlfriend and i develop an incredible relationship over thousands of miles. I moved half the world away, and now we're together, and most importantly - happier than i've ever been.

Oh, and if you actually took the time to read my ramblings, thanks! Good luck man.
