Default Are guys genuinely too dumb to pick up on signals?

There's this guy I like, and I really really like him a whole fucking lot. I figure I'm pretty obvious about it, finding any excuse to talk to him and occasionally walking to where he's going instead of where I'm going just to continue a conversation. My assumption is that he must simply not be into me, since he's not making any efforts with me and seems pretty unresponsive to my gestures, but do you guys think it's at all possible that he doesn't think I'm interested? He has seen me taking a guy up to my room (we live in the same dorm) before, so might he maybe think that I'm interested in other guys and thus not him? This thread is sort of retarded, partially because I know the answers to these questions (he's not that into me), but I'm asking anyway because I'm desperate for any shred of hope that maybe I can make this happen. I'm like all about this kid. I think about him all the time and it's fucking up my quality of life.

How old is he? It takes guys a l-o-o-ong time to figure out signals. I'm 60, and I'm still figuring out what girls meant when I was 17 or 18 or 19. Fortunately, by 21 I had started picking up signals.

Well, at least to me, a girl showing signs of interest means absolutely nothing, as most girls are just teases/flirts anyway. So I never make a move unless I'm absolutely 100% sure she wants it.

Or he's just not into you.

Hm... that's a comfort. Maybe he's just not sure. He's like 18 and I get the impression that he could quite easily be a virgin. In fact, I would be surprised if he weren't one, though he has told me that he has had girlfriends in the past. Argh; this is all so confusing.

You know, you could ask him out... I vaguely remember you being cute, and if you're talking to eachother a lot then he probably doesn't hate you.

Just "hey, I want to go see that new _____ movie, want to come with?"

Subliminal signals are pointless.

Unless you actually know how to flirt, don't bother. And it doesn't sound like you do, because you're 18 and think that walking him to wherever he's going is flirting.

Just walk up to him, and say 'Hey, why haven't you asked me out yet?' No room for misinterpretation. You'll find out once and for all.

I know how to flirt, but flirting is highly dependent on the other person. You can't flirt by yourself. I giggle a lot at everything he says (completely unintentionally; he's just so goddamn cute), I walk him places, and I start conversations with him whenever we run into each other.

I'm really close to doing as you suggest and being upfront about the matter, but the problem is that I see him every day and he knows all the people I do. It's the first quarter of freshman year of college and we're in the same classes with all the same kids. It would be awkward as hell (not to mention devastating) to have him shut me down

1) I was right, you really don't know how to flirt.

2) So you don't want to be with him, and this entire thread was just because you sensed that I was having a slow night?

OK, you caught me. I don't know how to flirt. What would be an example of appropriate flirting for the situation? I know where he lives. You think I should just show up naked?

Touch him excessively. Press you breasts against him every chance you get. Sit on his lap. If he's ever in your room, casually change your shirt in his presence like you don't even notice. Tell him your shoulders are sore and ask him to massage them. Initiate sexual conversations, about what he likes and fantasizes about. Tease him incessantly about being a virgin and offer to take care of that for him. Those sorts of things.

But seriously, you're better off sucking it up and taking the upfront approach.

You know, I really ought to be creeped out by how closely you seem to keep track of me, moony.

But yeah, I remember that thread. I think it was '05. I remember that guy too. I took the upfront approach with him and he shot me down. I later found out that he was a republican and all my shame was erased. After all, he was just a total moron. I can hardly be blamed for that.

In response to the suggested flirting techniques, he's just not that kind of guy. I don't think I've even touched him yet. He would be frightened. Maybe I should just ask him to dinner or something. But I know he would decline. Oh hell!

The signals I get from woman are very inconsistent.

I sometimes get the feeling that a woman is sending signals to me, really obvious ones. I go up and talk to them they basically say "Uh, why the fuck are you talking to me?".

I'm not imagining the signals, my friends tell me about them as well.

Now I just keep to myself.

Awww...:p Yer a girl of the female persuasion, who has a weird handle. What's so hard to remember? It's like my theory about public fame. If a public person has a name that is fairly unique & hard to confuse with any other name?

It's very conducive to fame. If people have to search their memories? Then the person ain't gonna be no Famous Star.

I think I said in the beta case, that there are probably people hung up on you that you don't even notice. You're just too busy or distracted & it makes you oblivious.

Hey! Wait...the guy's not like me is he? I've got to respect a person before I go out with them & I could never respect a goil who would go out with a guy like me! :p

No. Showing up naked would be, in most situations, a wee bit too forward.

I would suggest, next time you see him, try just bluring out "wanna fuck". That is ever so much more subtle. [/sarcasm]

I do not want to appear as sexist, let alone mysogistic, but to be honest, unless you are really repulsive in appearance, chicks have a much greater chance in picking up guys than the other way around.

But either way, members of the other gender can easily be scared off by too forward of an approach. I don't know why, but I seem to be compelled to suggest an 'honesty' twist to this whole thing.

If there is something about him that "catches your eye" whether it is the clothes he wears, the scent he exudes, his sense of humor, or whatever draws you to him,,, complimet him on that aspect; in a serious yet sensuous context. Tell him that you would be agreeable, if he is interested, in taking your relationship to a higher, or more intimate level... as your interaction progresses.

In aswer to your thread title: Yes... guys often seem to be too oblivious to pick up on what you may consider obvious 'signals' not because they are stupid or dumb, but rather because sooo many of you have a tendencey to be 'prick teases' that lead a fellow on, just to slam them to the ground in shame.

Trust me, just a few encounters like that (where you wind up picking broken and chipped teeth out of your mouth) will 'cure' you from asking ANY other chick out... EvEr.

Be true to yourself.
Be honset with the people you interact with.
But above all... understand, as you should be certain that they understand:

Yes today does not mean 'yes' forever, nor 'yes' for everything.
Take one day at a time... but make each day truth and honesty for both parties.

No... this rant is fucking true. The gender stereotypes have got to fucking go. I seriously hate how fucking women want to be treated as equals but have some strict expectations as to what a woman does and what a man does in a relationship. I fucking hate when people want it both ways. A study in the US conducted this year shows that the average man spends somewhere around $12,000 a year just to keep his significant other happy. Equality my fucking ass. Guys get shit out of necessity, girls get shit just to keep them happy. BRB... I think I'm going to go sock my girlfriend in the face a couple of times to cool down. Mad

GlitterPunk.....if any of what I'm about to say sounds harsh or attacking, please understand this is not directed to you personally.....but instead to the entire female species.

Ladies, ladies, ladies.....STOP THE FUCKIN INSANITY ALREADY! If something is on your mind, just say it.....and quit playing these elusive Sherlock Holmes detective games. Whether it's trying to pick up that cute guy in the classroom, or married 40+ years moving a washbasket in the middle of a doorway so he'll go do that load of laundry......just communicate with us in a normal concise manner with the mouthes that god gave you and save EVERYONE INVOLVED all this effort with this "hinting" bullshit.

My god, you women talk and talk and talk about everything under the sun with the rest of your hens. From cuticles to cunt hairs.....coupons to cock size. You'll have long detailed and elaborate conversations with other women about which type of potatoes is more appropriate for a recipe, or go on for hours gossipping about every simple nuance with the latest rumors about the lady next door. But talking to guys? Lets turn it into this fabulous mystery, with Kreskin mind reading ability expectations, roll it up with deciphering emotional cues as if they were some ancient hieroglyphs.......and you turn it into one muddled mess.

You got your right to vote, you got the right to work, you got all of this empowerment in the name of "equality".....well guess what? The bill is due, and now is the time to pay the check. If you are going to enjoy all of the perks of that equality, you also have to share equally your burden of the trickier parts. Asking a guy out, fearing rejection, making the first move, you planning/initiating the dates....all that jazz. Stop this nonsensical stereotyping where guys have to be the ones making all the moves. Yeah sure, there are SOME men out there that will be put off or make whatever negative analysis of a woman that isn't playing the damsel in distress role.....but fuck em, they ain't quality guys any how.

If you can't EQUALLY share the minuses as well as the pluses with all of this "equality" then hand the rest back. Quit your jobs, drop out of college, go back home and play the Scarlet O'hara role. Just sit on your daddy's porch looking pretty and helping out around the house (cooking, cleaning, child rearing). If/when the day comes Prince Charming swoops you off your feet....then you can spend the rest of your life cooking/cleaning/having his babies. He'll call the shots, you'll have someone else giving your life its direction, and you'll all live happily ever after. Right?

OP, just ask the guy out for something simple......like coffee. Use one of the myriad of classes you are in as your excuse if you really need to sugarcoat the "date" intent somewhat. And during that date YOU TELL HIM how you've had your eye on him. No bullshit. No beating around the bush. No verbal chess match as if he's trying to solve a fuckin Sudoku puzzle. Just what is on your mind! Like you would with any other human being..... whether you were ordering Chinese or bitching your sis out cuz she wore your favorite heels.

You can play it the safe way, and never have disappointment in this world....along with never savoring/enjoying the thrills of victory. Or you can throw caution to the wind and relish some amazing triumphs, along with some hurtful defeats. Its called life ladies, that is what it's all about......the complexity/trickiness of the colorful journey. Nobody that was ever born was given some "guarantee" from the heavens that any of this would be easy. So save us all some time, effort and angst.... and make your dreams come true. If you ain't willing to risk a little personal embarrasement or take that gamble, then you really ain't worthy of ever finding those dreams in the first place.

Yes?^^^ Yet many men will still condemn women for being too forward.

Don't guys <25 put women down for not putting out & call them whores for it? If a girl is too forward...then she's 'obviously' a whore. Life isn't full of honesty. Every subject, if you look at it right is too dangerous to talk about.

People seem to talk anyways...somehow.

More than one shitty study has shown that men prefer a challenge. If she can't run a non-school eg: music/movies/'net conversation with him? Why bother?

...

Well that's beautiful, man, but it's also a load of crap. What is all this honestly bullshit you guys keep going on about? Guys don't like honesty; neither do girls. You know what happens when you honestly tell a guy you want to fuck him? He goes limp. Even if he's your boyfriend. We don't want to go straight to the honest fucking and being open about our feelings and shit because that's no fun. People like to play games. It's most of what we do. This is why women bat their eyelashes and why men won't call until a few days later. It's just the way things are done. You have to keep the other person guessing because just putting all your cards on the table only ends up working out if your cards are really fucking good. I don't have a royal flush, and neither do most people. We don't really like each other very much, so we have to create some mystery so people won't figure out who we are and that we're not as cool as they thought. This is the world. If you think I'm wrong, you're not paying attention.

Apart from that, it's just awkward as hell when someone you're not into tells you straight up that they want you. It's a really uncomfortable situation that would never come to pass if everyone just took the signals.

Wait, what?

Honestly is the foundation of any real relationship.

It's a matter of tact. With a 't'.

Oooh! Geepee, that was lovely. Seems like you might have an ace or two up your sleeve. All relationships are political & people are always trying to seek...seek...awww...ummm... Their proper position or sumpin'. Who's in 'charge' or who gets who to think that they're in 'charge'.

If we were being honest here, I might admit that you might intimidate me too much...who knows? We do relate to other people through a filter of how we related to our parents too. Sometimes it's hard (says he as he talks through his hat, his magical hat) for me not to see the wimmens as my scary & distant mother.

I imagine that you might seem scarily thmart to some guys. Y'know, as always: they hate you if you're clever & despise a fool..."Oooh! What a bitch. She thinks that she's so smart." "Dumb little cunt."

Awww...you can't win. You can't break even & you can't get out as it's the only game in town.

There are so many flaws in this post. First off, where in my post did I come even remotely close to saying you should just walk up to him and say..."I wanna fuck you". Of course go through the normal dating, courtship, whatever time frame that is comfortable for both parties...(could be an hour or a year) before busting out that line. Christ girl, you are going from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Guys go limp when you tell them you want to fuck them outright? You are OBVIOUSLY with the wrong damn guys then. I've had the same woman for 9 friggin years, and she can tell me outright in the kitchen....."lets go in the bedroom and get funky" (or whatever "hey let's fuck" CLEAR CUT MESSAGE) and I'm rock hard before I even get to the hallway. Seriously, it sounds like you have been hooking up with scared little boys....not real men. And before you throw the age card down because I have some years on ya....I have NEVER gone limp at 17 or 37 when a girl more or less said to me..."let's fuck right now".

So people "like to play games" huh? You really enjoying this? Is that why you came to us with your dilemma asking for advice? That why this much of this forum is comprised of thread after thread of issues like this...."how do I get out of the friend zone", "what did she mean by this", "did I blow it or still have a chance". Then there is all the time wasted, effort spent, brain cells abused....thinking, and thinking, and re-thinking all of these "games". Yeah, you are having a lot of fun, ain't ya?????

Go ahead, continue your game of cat and mouse. Try to convince me "well that is the way the world is, its what you do". Better yet convince the rest of the world. God forbid should the world drop all its pretense and bullshit and actually be REAL for a change. Seriously, if some sects of the populace wants to make human relationships into a silly "game".....just be fully aware that not everyone is "playing". Yes there are genuine and sincere folks out there.....the only problem is you'll never hook up with them because you are too busy "playing" while they are out there "living".

Dude, I'll be happy to meet the others who aren't playing. But until then we still have to worry about seeming too desperate or too distant or too open or whateverthefuck the problem is. I want this guy, but I don't want to come on too strong. It's a balance; a game. I can't let him know how much I want him or he would get scared if he doesn't feel the same way. Even if he likes me, knowing the degree to which I like him would be frightening. And if he liked me just as much, that would be weird too. People can't know other people's true feelings until they're really intimate. It would be crazy if we did.

I would continue this, but my non-e-life calls

No! It is not our fault. We are forced to adapt if we ever want to get anywhere with women.

So basically, it isn't a matter of intelligence for either gender. It's more a power factor. Women have the power, and there's nothing that can be done about it. So we're just going to have to go by whatever method of courtship the female wishes, as she is the only one who can consent to sex.

Nope, it would be the women's turn to adapt. Admittedly, many will simply refuse to have sex and lead to a decrease in population, but enough would still want to get laid to keep the race going. Shit, that would solve both the women bullshit problem and overpopulation!

Women can easily go without sex for much longer than men can.

And still, this all plays into the whole idea of women having all the power when it comes to human mating rituals.

It's pretty much a lose/lose situation for men. Mad

Only if we let it be! It'll suck for a couple years, but no woman under 40 years and 250 lbs will go without sex forever! Especially when they hit 30 and their biological clock is ticking so loud you can hear it.

It's not just a psychological dependency. There's also a physiological aspect to it. I mean, it's in our genes and all.

All this talk of turning the tables is great in theory. But it would never work out in reality, sadly.

What is all this honestly bullshit you guys keep going on about?

There is a reason why rap songs depict women as lying cheating bitches. The honesty is just not there. Its been like that since Jesus for God's sake!! In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Shakespeare straight out tells women through his play when Hamlet starts yelling at his mother as she is a representative of all women. The disguise women have turned into a necessity (make up) as a lie. To not show guys their natural beauty but an unnatural lie. Of course, the context of this was that his mother married his uncle right after his father's death. But the truth still remains without.

Guys don't like honesty; neither do girls.

I'm not sure about girls not liking honesty. But I know guys really appreciate it. If girls are going around thinking guys do not like honesty, that would be a good reason as to why so many men of this generation are assholes. Its a direct cause of being lied to... turning into an asshole.

You know what happens when you honestly tell a guy you want to fuck him? He goes limp. Even if he's your boyfriend.

I think you probably just have horrible gay-dar. What kind of homo's are you picking up that go limp when you tell them you want to fuck them? Any guy would fuck an ugly girl if he was presented with a proposition. Seriously, if a guy is turning down sex, that guy has some serious questions he needs to ask about himself.

We don't want to go straight to the honest fucking and being open about our feelings and shit because that's no fun. People like to play games. It's most of what we do. This is why women bat their eyelashes and why men won't call until a few days later.

You are part of the reason why we have so many assholes of this generation. You actually believe this is what people want contradictory from everything we are taught as right and wrong through our whole childhoods. If men aren't calling you back, then you are probably one of those girls that are attracted to assholes. You know... the whole "some father figure during my childhood abused me so now I'm going to date the next asshole I see in hopes that I can turn him into a good man." You should have no problem with finding your Mr. Right getting that job at Hooters. Just make sure you tell him you only work there to put yourself through med school.

I guess a sort of symbiotic relationship occurs in this instance. People like you, who think its okay to lie to men because its what you think they want, are creating asshole but in turn are attracted to assholes.

I think you are very narrow minded in how the world works. This is not human nature we are talking about here. Only until modern times have we just started dating pre-marriage. Shit, most of the time of human civilization was done in arranged marriages. Just because you have a fucked up life and choose not to do anything about it by accepting it, doesn't mean life itself is universally fucked up for everyone. I guess whatever works for you to keep you believing that its not you who are fucked up dating other fucked up people, but its life in general that is like that... sad.

Apart from that, it's just awkward as hell when someone you're not into tells you straight up that they want you. It's a really uncomfortable situation that would never come to pass if everyone just took the signals.

Finally, you got something that has some truth to it. But not for guys. Unless you are still going for those gay guys that go limp at the very mention of having sex with a girl. Guys take it as a compliment, as they are thinking of some way to get that girl out of there and into some private area to start the fuck-a-thon. I guess girls would be finding situations like those awkward. Since they are probably getting hit on all the time. So much that at some point they take the compliment for granted and just become uppity bitches.

What I mean is, if she won't agree to just be fucking strait with you, the relationship isn't worth pursuing and you should just go on to someone else. When you finally DO find the woman that will level with you, you'll be happier for it.

They're pathetic horndogs who only think with their cocks. They give a bad name to real men everywhere.

With every group of people, there is always a subgroup of shitty ones. Not much that can be done about that.

Well, that would be nice. That's pretty much the ideal that I strive for. But realistically, it's just not very likely. Unfortunately sometimes we just have to settle with what we can get if we want anything at all. :(

Theories is best! You don't have to peruse to many sex/'ship columns or read too many studies of the same to see plenty of wackiness in all levels & kinds of boy/girl interaction. People of both genders are wacky & believe all sorts of BS about themselves & other people of both genders.

Thus? How can things go smoothly? And just look at what busy people do with their time? Where do they get all the extra time to find out what sense is & then put it into action?

Actually, my last girlfriend was a miracle of nature. She actually never played any petty mind games, was upfront all the time. She even approached me when we first met. And we ended up together for over 7 months. We never even fought once believe it or not.

Come to think of it, I kinda took that whole thing for granted. It was great, but I just didn't see how great it was at the time.

If you think that walking in the same direction as a guy is an obvious hint that you are interested in him sexually, then hit yourself with a tack hammer, because you are a retard.

The only thing you need to do is stop being so anxious for things to happen, and just start talking to him more. Let nature run it's course, and there is no way that you could know he isn't interested in you. If you live with other guys it's possible he is intimidated.

Guys aren't too dumb. Girls are just too slutty, so if a guy assumes she is hitting on him, it turns out she is just being a flirty slut. If she is actually trying to chat him up, he will think she's a slut and ignore it.

i think the main point ppl are missing here is that she wants some element of the interaction to be something she can blame on him. "well, he stroked my hair, and it was just on from there."

if this pussy would get over himself, well i think the spoils are apparent.

I'm terrible at reading signals.

Funny thing is, when I can see some girl flirting with another guy, it's so obvious. But when it's me.. no chance.

Not unless they just grabbed me by the balls and started licking my nipples.

And you think that it pays to be honest & straightforward with creatures like this?

When they often spend so much time working & watching/playing sports that they've never really experienced much of it? How do you figure?

What? I hope you're joking.

Huh? How does me being a couch potato every Sunday in the fall for 14 hours a day.....have ANY relevance to women expecting I can read minds?????

Please elaborate.

Not read minds, read body language. Which you can't do.

but the problem is that I see him every day and he knows all the people I do. It's the first quarter of freshman year of college and we're in the same classes with all the same kids. It would be awkward as hell (not to mention devastating) to have him shut me down

Replace all the he's and him's with she's and her's and you have your answer as to why he hasn't done anything.

QFT!!! I kinda wish a bright sign that says "I am flirting with you. Please ask me out" would suddenly appear every time a chick is flirting.

Better yet, we can do The Sims thing, where that friendship box with the plus sign or negative sign everytime your talking to someone, and the heart thing with the same plus minus thing. :p

really, its impossible to tell if a girl is flirting or just being a tease because its both the same but just with different intentions.

No, there are indications that can show whether or not the girl is being sincere.

She probably found out your a C-lister and that you weren't what you seemed so she cut you off. You'll see the differences if you know what your looking for. Jesus christ what do you people do out in public? You never watch interactions amongst people, To see how people interact, what actions mean what and why whats happening is happening?

And just because a girl talks to you doesn't mean she likes you, although if its repetitive, where you can put in the question of WHY? It can be a sign. But id rely on more than just that as proof.

Just saying "I like you". If I'm not interested, I can just pretend she meant it as a friend and we can move on and just be friends. If I am, well, then that just made things a whole hell of a lot easier.

Whenever I talk to him he mocks me and makes me feel dumb, and usually rejects an invitation of some sort, so I think it's clear that it's not going to happen. Besides, I devote almost as much energy to liking (and thinking about) this kid as I have to hating some people. And that's just too much. I really think about him all the time. Well theres step one, if you have to ask if they like/are interested in you...you should be able to tell the obvious. Actions speak louder than words to me. She can say one thing and do another, with the option to read between the lines.

I dont understand why guys all the time need to have the truth repeated over and over verbally. If the girl likes you, you should be able to draw that conclusion over the stuff she does/says. If you have to ask you should just quit what your doing and go back the drawing board. Thats like being given the answers to a test and still failing. Hey baby i notice youve been talking to me alot, hanging out with me every chance you get and you've even kissed me a few times....do you like me or something, i mean wtf??? Its like questioning the obvious/facts....like asking a black person if they are black. Excuse me sir, your skin seems dark, are you a african american?

Heh sounds like it if you got the date memorized, usually if you can get within a certain distance/space from them, and their face is close to yours just throw it up or realize that if you don't react your throwing away your chance with said girl. Choose up, just realize and don't throw it all away just cause it doesn't seem natural. Run the show and make it happen.

Soo what if she came on too quick, be ready for it next time. Don't let the same mistake bite you in the ass twice. And you gotta think why the fuck are you there messing with the girl if thats not what you want in the first place?

Heh so shes gazing at you and your worried about getting rejected. You know what do you have to lose anymore? Fucking finish the story, and close the book if you cannot get any where with her. Shit if i have a probable cause where i think a girl is interested i have to interact, i cant sit and think about it thatll kill my mind. I did this with a girl recently, i sort of picked up on a past event, girl was giving me some signs and shit and i just am like fuck this shit i gotta know if shes on to me or if im imagining shit. I was right, she did mean business and im glad i made a move cause im not stuck wondering anymore. That's all it takes.

Shes seems intimidated of me again. I always catch her with a nervous gaze when I argue with my dad. Actually happened on Friday. I was just having a little argument with my dad and I saw her with her finger on her upper lip and she was just gazing at me. The bad thing is that each time I start talking to her again, I become too attached to her. Everyday in school I just want it to end so I can see her and I barely hang out with my friends. I think I should just talk to her if she tries to talk to me. Heh she cant even get mad at me for some reason.

Why would she get mad at you? Or do you mean you can say whatever you want and she takes it without fronting a bothered/disturbed pose?

Sorry sort of jacking the thread to advise this guy lol. If your not over analyzing and what you say is true it sounds like shes still open to be talked to, and you should take the opprotunity and finish what you started, whether it be with a good or bad ending..just so you can set your mind at ease over the shit.

This is absolute nonsense. You seem to think you are flirting with him, yet you have never once touched him? At the next opportune moment, give him a "sensuous" hug if you get my meaning. Long and with plenty of tits against him. If he in no way seems aroused, he is probably as attracted to you as he is to his grandma(not to say his grandmother gives those kind of hugs to him).

Edit: Oh, I just read your update. It turns out you are just ugly. I would wish you better luck next time, but I realize the worst thing you can be in this world, sexually speaking, is an ugly girl. It's bad enough as an ugly guy like me, but you're just totally fucked off because Jesus loves you.

Sounds like your waiting for something obvious or big to act on, do you have this girls number or any contact information? Talk to her ass already and ask her out or something so you dont have to be sitting down and giving each situation u had with her a textbook checklist of "Does she like me"?

I'd have to agree, that us guys can be terrible at picking up signals. Subtle and even obvious, I regret to say that one time a girl literally told me that she had a huge crush on me, and asked me to a party. The sad part is I didn't take the hint, or in this case flashing neon sign. I felt so stupid for missing that. Oh well, I've gotten better, a little.

Well...I've usually got a terrrible urge to look over my shoulder to see who she's really interested & is actually talking to.
