Default Higher Authorities

Um, fuck 'em.

But, to take it a bit more in depth, I've noticed people talk about taking things to cops and different government agencies in the not so distant past. I feel safe in assuming that they were joking about it, but I'd like to see a stance taken in this regard.

Is there any instance in which the authorities should be contacted with information?

I can think of none.

This was, of course, inspired by jackketch's little rant.

There probably aren't many occaisons I agree with you whole heartedly. But this is one.

Yeah I lost it a bit this morning and went off on one of my diatribes but it really bugged me, y'know?

That anyone who's read my posts in the past (and the guy had) could think I, me jackketch, would conspire with Babylon??!

*puts on 'Unmarked Helicopters'by Soul Coughing and goes back to checking for bugs under his bed...only found roaches so far*

Unless they endanger the existence of Totse, then no.

However, I would personally draw the line at paedo' sites.

As one of the (I'd think only) badge wearing Totse mod on the forum, I'll give you all one big piece of advice:

"Does it break the law?"
Thats what you should be asking yourselves. Take a look at whatever is in question and ask yourselves that. Remember that no information, unless either held by a company as a trademarked "secret" or government held classified information, is illegal to release to the public. I think those are the only limitations, but I may be missing some.

Also remember that unless something illegal is being hosted on the servers that run this website, its not our liability. If 'dudebro6969' posts a link to his website that hosts child porn, warez, and snuff films exclusively, hosted within the US, then thats his problem, not ours. Law enforcement can threaten us all they want, but the most they'll ask of us is to take that link down, and if the problem persists, we can refer the law enforcement (to our discretion) the offending user's information so they can take action on them.

Remember, you wouldn't hold Home Depot liable if a murder is committed with a hammer.

You don't live in the UK thats a for sure!

Dunblaine gave Fuehrer Blair the excuse he needed to ban all legally held handguns...just for example.

I agree with everything you just said. In fact, you said it much better than I could have myself. The fact is that there is very little that can get totse in trouble. As Jeff said once, one of the only things that CAN get us in trouble is when someone uses our name to do something illegal. For instance, if someone starts a "totse army" and starts committing real life crimes in the name of totse, we might get a bit of heat for that (especially if they are crimes that you need a trial by jury for). Other than that, we have a responsiblity to protect people's privacy. Not surrender it to the authorities when we think they might be doing something illegal. We aren't the police. Furthermore, the only person from the administration of this site who has the authority to give info to the police is Jeff. We shouldn't be volunteering people's info nor should we be asked to give it out. If the police really want the info, I'm sure they can find a way to get a hold of Jeff.

Does anyone remember the AionSan incident in IRC?

If not, I can get in to it, but I'm pretty sure I was justified in my actions considering the context of the threats made.

Ooh do tell?

this thread is intriguing. It's scary to think people might report posters to the authorities over one topic, but any other illegal activities are fine.
